You can now recycleyour food and drinkcartons (Tetra Paks)with your cardboard

in the blue bag as part of the Council’sweekly kerbside recycling collection service. In the past, cartons have been difficult torecycle as they are made from a mixture of70-90% paperboard, aluminium foil andplastic but with improving technologies theycan now be recycled. All sorts of productscan be made from recycled drinks cartonsincluding envelopes, plasterboard liner, paper carrier bags, broom handles, roof tilesand even garden furniture.

Please empty, remove the lids if possibleand wash and squash your cartons andput them with your cardboard in your bluebag - by squashing your cartons, you canfit in three times as many, saving space bothin your container and the collection vehicle. One way to squash them is to flatten underyour foot. And remember to flatten, fold orcut all cardboard so that it fits into your bluebag.

“Highest priority” status given tore-opening Saltford Railway Station

The West of England Partnership whichrepresents all four local authorities in theBristol and Bath Area has announced thatSaltford Station is one of only two newstations to be given the highest priority forre-opening, the other being Ashton Gate.

The Department for Transport is holding aconsultation on what should be in the GreatWestern Rail Franchise which will operatefrom 2013 until 2028. The West of EnglandPartnership is putting forward three aims –establishing the so-called Greater BristolMetro, re-opening the Portishead Line, andseeking additional rolling stock. Re-openingSaltford Station as a commuter station isseen as part of establishing the GreaterBristol Metro which will include a half-hourlyservice between Bath Spa and TempleMeads. Saltford Station is expected to bere-instated in Phase 2 of the Bristol MetroProject in the period 2019 to 2023This is fantastic news for Saltford. It meansthat re-opening the railway station hasmoved from a possibility to a probability. The Campaign group will do all it can tobring the proposed time for re-openingforward.

Thank-you to everyone who returned thefollow-up questionnaires given to thosewho said that they would use a re-openedstation daily. The information has alreadybeen used to support our case.

Duncan Hounsell & Chris Warren

(Chris Warren has been elected as aParish Councillor under the banner of theStation Campaign.)

Saltford Short Mat Bowls Club

On Saturday last, 10th March, SaltfordS.M.B.C. hosted a tournament at theHall to raise funds towards the S.C.A.finances. This is the eleventh year invita-tions have been sent out, and such is ourreputation that we had a full comple-ment, together with three teams waitingfor someone to drop out! Sixteen teamsfrom Clubs from as far afield as Fown-hope (near Hereford) and Ilchester,Highbridge, and Chippenham arrived totake part. Each team plays five gamesand the winning team finishes with mostpoints won. Three teams lost only onegame so the number of shots decidedthe winner of the trophies, this year,Parker Pens. Graham Luker, of ModernGlass (Bristol) once again sponsored theevent in memory of his Dad, Bill, whomany of you will know from his involve-ment with the Church. He was also along time active member of the BowlsClub.

We offered refreshments and membersworked hard to ensure that our visitorsenjoyed a memorable day. The positiveand pleasant comments as players leftwere a credit to our Club. The standard ofplay was high, with games being playedin a sporting manner. The eventual win-ners, after a recount of shots won, wasKeinton (Somerset) with Fownhope asrunners-up. Congratulations to all whoentered and played to the best of theirability. It’s the spirit of goodwill andfriendship which wins in the end. Saltfordis holding a monthly open morning onselected Sundays, next one on 22nd

April, for anyone who would like to trythis friendly game. No equipment re-quired, just turn up and have a go!

Sensors at Manor and Beech Road junctions with Bath RoadIn the last issue of SCAN, we mentioned the sensors that were put in at the junctionsof Manor Road and Beech Road with Bath Road to help vehicles entering the BathRoad flow by sending a signal to the pedestrian crossings. We have now discoveredthat last year, without any warning, B&NES changed the timings such that at peak flowthe pedestrian crossing waiting time increased from 20 to 30 seconds and the vehiclewaiting time doubled from 35 to 70 seconds. The Parish Council, unhappy at theimposition that this placed on Saltford residents to produce very little if any effect ontraffic flow, have requested that the original or even shorter times are introduced. Asite meeting was arranged for 19 March to discuss the matter. As this was after SCAN’scopy deadline, we will keep you up to date with the results of our negotiations in thenext issue. In the meantime, see our website www.saltfordparishcouncil.gov.uk orcontact the Clerk.

FairtradeThe Parish Council welcomes the setting up of a Fairtrade steering group in Saltford. The Council supports the principle of Fairtrade and aims to use Fairtrade products atits functions as appropriate.

Planning application site visitsApplicants and occupants of properties neighbouring an application may request asite visit when an application is on the Parish Council's agenda. A member ormembers of the Council would come and view the development site from yourproperty. The Parish Council can either support an application, object to it, or offercomments to B&NES, who are the planning authority. Formal objection can be madeonly if, in the Council's opinion, the proposals conflict with a policy, or policies, inB&NES’ Local Plan.

Saltford Townswomen’s GuildSaltford Brass Mills have existed inSaltford for many years and members ofthe Guild learned more of their history attheir January meeting,  coming to Saltfordin the late 17th century.  In 1720 theingenuity of a young man caused importantchanges in the manufacture of brass.  Thisbright material is used in the manufactureof light fittings, covers and doors fittings.A very noisy procedure then. The localinhabitants, after the mill closed,  opposedits re-opening  A listed building, which isbeing restored, it is open on certain dates, published locally.

There was a reduced number of membersat the February meeting, probably due tothe very cold weather.  After the businesssection and a cup of coffee, memberssettled to learn of safety in the homemeasures from two representative of thelocal police.  They gave good advice, suchas that one has a right to deny entry toanybody, except the police.  A lot of goodsafety advice was given and there weremany freebies on offer, such as bells forpurses and marker pens to help with thetips gained during the morning.

Saltford Afternoon WI
