Preface

This document provides information on the Telerik Report Designer, a utility that allows you to set up and manage the designs used for token printing.

This version of the document relates to SATEON Release 2.6. It may not include changes incorporated in later versions of the software.

Date of latest update: May 2013.

About the Telerik Report Designer SATEON is a powerful yet easy-to-use browser-based access control system that allows users to manage and monitor physical access to sites. It integrates access control, alarm and incident monitoring and comprehensive reporting facilities.

SATEON includes the facility to print cards for users and visitors at specific printers. Card designs can contain personal data from the SATEON database such as name, employee number, department, photos, etc. They can also include standard text and graphics such as company names and logos.

SATEON users can set up their own card designs using the Telerik Report Designer, a utility which is provided as part of the standard SATEON installation.

About this guide This document explains how to use the Telerik Report Designer to set up new designs for token printing.

It is aimed at installers and system administrators who are responsible for setting up new card designs.

Section 1

Introduction

SATEON supports the printing of tokens for personnel and visitors at specific printers.

Card designs can contain personal data from the SATEON database such as name, employee number and department as well as photos. They can also include standard text and graphics such as company names and logos.

Note the following important points:

• Card designs are held as Telerik reports (.trdx files) and can be created and modified using the Telerik Report Designer. For full details of using this, see the Telerik website (http://www.telerik.com/products/reporting.aspx).

• These examples and the descriptions assume the standard credit card size card as supported by most printers (CR80 format – 85.6 mm x 54 mm).

• The card printer in use may have its own requirements/restrictions.

• At present the system does not support magnetic strip printing.

About the Telerik Report Designer The Telerik Report Designer is a utility provided with SATEON to allow users to create and manage their own token designs.

Some sample token designs are included which you can base your token designs on. In order to produce a token design a user will need to:

1. Define how the token is to look and prepare any images required.

2. Create a new design based on an existing Telerik report.

3. Set up and test the new card design within SATEON.

Page 7: SATEON 2.6 - Telerik Report Design Guide 1.0

This guide provides a brief summary only. For more detailed information on creating and managing Telerik reports, see the Telerik Reporting website (http://www.telerik.com/products/reporting.aspx)

Installation of the Telerik Report Designer The Telerik Report Designer is installed on the server as part of the standard SATEON installation.

Application Unless an alternative location was selected during installation, the application will be installed in the following default folder:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Grosvenor Technology Ltd\SATEON\Utilities\Telerik Report Designer

It consists of the following files:

• Telerik.ReportDesigner.exe – the executable.

• Telerik.ReportDesigner.exe.config – the XML configuration file.

Example token designs Four default token designs are included as part of the installation. By default they are in the following location:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Grosvenor Technology Ltd\SATEON\WebSites\SATEON\Sample Cards

Note: This location has also been defined in IIS (Internet Information Services) so that the sample token designs can be used by the SATEON application.

We recommend that you store any token designs that you create in this folder, as the security and management by IIS has already been set up for this folder.

The sample card designs are as follows:

• PersonnelL.trdx – Personnel data, landscape format.

• PersonnelP.trdx – Personnel data, portrait format.

• VisitorL.trdx – Visitor data, landscape format.

• VisitorP.trdx – Visitor data, portrait format.

You can easily amend these designs to create additional ones.

The sample designs use CR80 size (85.6 mm x 54 mm).

Section 2

Using the Report Designer

This section describes the steps you need to follow to create a new token design within the Telerik Report Designer.

Before you start Consider how you want your tokens to look before starting. For example, will the layout be portrait or landscape? What personal data should appear? Will there be a corporate logo?

• If the design is to include any graphics, for example a logo, then make sure you have the graphics files in an accessible location. The Telerik Report Designer supports .jpg, .bmp and .png files.

• Ensure the image file is sized for the layout on a CR80 format.

Setting up a new token design The best way of setting up a new token design is to open one of the sample reports, save it under a new name and then edit that. This ensures the dimensions are correct.

Adding and deleting data fields Data from the SATEON database can be included in the card design. This is specific to the type of design selected, e.g. Personnel or Visitor.

For the sample Personnel card layouts, the Title, FirstName, Surname and Department fields are included. For the sample Visitors card layouts, the Title, FirstName, Surname ValidFrom and ValidTo fields are included.

Both card layouts also include the person’s photo which is held as the Image field in the database.

The Data Explorer pane on the right lists the fields that can be included in the card design, allowing you to select additional fields.

• To add new fields to the design, drag them from the Data Explorer on to the card design.

• The size of the box defines the size of the font

Troubleshooting

Report write protected The folder used to store the sample token designs is in an area managed by IIS. Token designs needs to be located here so that the token designs can be used by the SATEON application.

There may be occasions when IIS has a lock on the file that prevents any updates. In this case any attempt to save the card design will fail with an error message that the file is write protected.

If this happens, select the Save As option and provide a new name for the report. You will need to set up this new name in the System Configuration > Token Printing > Card Design page in SATEON.
