General

In addition to regular Inmarsat-B services, Saturn B equipment withsoftware for Extended Services provides as follows:

• Inmarsat-B Lease Mode CN17

• Saturn B Enhanced Bitrate ModuleInmarsat-B Lease Mode and Saturn B Enhanced Bitrate Moduleare special services provided by some LESOs.

• Saturn Bm Dual Antenna functions

The services are generally operated through global beam ofInmarsat’s spare satellites (Inmarsat I2 and spare I3 satellites),however, Saturn B may operate on I3 Spotbeams if allocated.

Inmarsat Lease Mode CN17

Inmarsat offers operation for parties who want to establish closednetwork services. CN17 is a system for long term communication. The Inmarsat Lease Mode CN17 offers the same service (lessDistress) as with Saturn B in Inmarsat Normal Mode.

The Lease Gateway LES generally only offers 16 kbps Voice and64 kbps High Speed Data services.

Page 6: Sat B Extended Services

Saturn B Extended Services6

Saturn B Enhanced Bitrate Module

Saturn B Enhanced Bitrate Module (EBM) requires installation ofan Interface Converter Unit (ICU) and an External Modem unit.EBM is a system for long term communication over a leased satellitechannel. Initiation of lease service is by selection of speed, type ofmodulation and channel (frequency) both at the MES and LES.The system is open for operation through Inmarsat’s lease satellitesonly.• For operation, please note that Saturn B needs to be

commissioned for this service.• If Saturn B is commissioned for Inmarsat normal mode, the IMN

Numbers registered for the terminal remain unchanged for use innormal mode.

Saturn B with Enhanced Bitrate Module (EBM) offers three differentservices:• Fixed• Variable Bandwidth System (VBS)• Variable Bit Rate (CN17Ext)

FixedThe Fixed service is a manual operation where frequency, speed etc.is agreed upon with the Lease Gateway LES and set up manuallyeach time you initiate a connection.

Variable Bandwidth System (VBS), andVariable Bit Rate (CN17Ext)VBS is a Telenor/COMSAT LES system implementation, whereasCN17Ext is a Nera/Stratos system implementation. They provideship-to-shore and shore-to-ship dial-up service. Selection of speed, channel etc. is automatic, based on request and available service(channel/speed).The systems include frequency management at the LES for optimumuse of leased channel(s). The VBS and CN17Ext systems are basedon extended Inmarsat signalling. The services are open for operation through Inmarsat’s leasesatellites only.

Dialing through a selected terrestrial network is only possible usingthe preselected Lease Gateway LES.The selected network number may be in the range 0 to 127.

Example of call through preselected Lease Gateway, and network 1:

Priority calls

The following call priority levels are recognized by the Inmarsatsystem:

0 – Routine1 – Safety2 – Urgent

Saturn B normally transmits calls with priority 0: Routine.

Whether you are using the Display Handset or a telephone, dialing *1or *2 ahead of the ordinary call digits gives the call priority 1 or 2respectively.

Assignment of priority level is only possible using preselected LeaseGateway LES and selected network.

Distress alarm

On a Saturn Bm Marine terminal with MCU lease mode software, theDistress Alarm function is not available even when operating innormal mode.

New installationsThe equipment should be installed as described in the Saturn BmInstallation manual, with the exception of mounting and setting up ofthe Distress Alarm unit.

Existing installationsFor Saturn Bm installations with Distress Alarm unit(s) already includ-ed, the unit(s) must be disconnected and removed.

A common "serial" cable connects both Distress Alarm units andMessage Indicator units to the Main Control Unit. When removing aDistress Alarm unit, the cables should be interconnected in a stand-ard 4-pole connection box as indicated below.

)+.+)+.+)+.+ Installation

Saturn B Enhanced Bitrate Module (EBM) offers three differentexternal high speed data service options. The services are onlyavailable over lease mode satellites:• Fixed• Variable Bandwidth System (VBS)

• Variable Bitrate (CN17Ext)Within each service both manual and hot-line access modes aresupported for channel activation. In addition to the standard Saturn B installation, the Enhanced BitrateModule (EBM) consists of an Interface Converter Unit (ICU), and anexternal modem unit (Comtech CDM-550T).For activation, see Introduction > Activation of paid functions. The system can be used in several different configurations to suitethe various user’s requirements and services offered by the LESGateway operators. Users will be aware that lease mode operationmeans that there is a strong binding between terminals and the LESoperator effectively resembling Closed User Groups.

Access procedures and sequences may be different from those ofthe regular Inmarsat legacy services in normal mode.

Interface Converter Unit - ICU

The ICU is either in normal mode (regular Inmarsat-B or InmarsatCN17), or in EBM mode.In normal mode the Saturn B MCU is directly connected to the antennaRX and TX paths, and the Comtech CDM-550T Modem isdisconnected.

In EBM mode the Comtech Modem is connected to the antenna RX andTX paths while the MCU is only receiving and tracking the satellite. The user’s DTE equipment is connected to the Comtech DTE port. When a call/channel has been set up the data traffic bypasses theMCU completely. During a call the MCU will remain tuned to, andreceive, the CESAL channel of the selected Lease Gateway.

Interface Converter Unit - ICU

The ICU has two main operating modes, Normal mode and EBMmode. See figure below.

Normal mode(regular Inmarsat B or Inmarsat Lease CN17 mode)

In Normal mode the ICU is transparent to the signals from the SaturnB terminal, allowing ordinary Inmarsat traffic.

EBM modeIn EBM mode, the ICU acts as a frequency conversion unit betweenthe Comtech Modem 70 MHz IF signals and the Saturn B ADE L-band signals. The TX converter frequency is 1573 MHz and the RXconverter frequency 1471.5 MHz. In this mode regular Inmarsat trafficis not possible. The ICU is in EBM mode when the indicator next tothe EXT MODEM button is lit.

When configuring the Comtech Modem, make sure that the outputlevel is set to 0 dBm. A lower output level setting will cause a distur-bance in the output of the Saturn B HPA.

General

The Fixed service option, which is supported from software version7.12 and above, requires that the Comtech Modem ispreprogrammed with fixed channels and data rates. Since channelsand data rates are pre-defined there is no exchange of parameterinformation between the Saturn B terminal and the Gateway LES.In the Fixed service option a call is always initiated from mobile.

• Installation must include opening keys for high_speed_data (seethe Saturn B Data Service manual), lease_mode, and nera_ebm.

• For activation of Lease Mode and EBM, using the ENHANCEDSETUP function (89), see Activation of paid functions in theIntroduction section.

• Program preferred Lease Gateway in corresponding ocean regionin menu LEASE GATEWAY LES function (57).

• Select correct current ocean region and lease mode withCURRENT OCEAN REGION function (20). Terminal will tune tothe CESAL TDM channel of the selected Lease Gateway, anddisplay ‘LeaseMode’ in handset display when ready for call.

Note that the pre-defined fixed lease channels (RX/TX) apply to oneparticular ocean region only. Users should avoid activating a leasechannel in the wrong ocean region as this may disturb otherconnections.

Activating the Enhanced Bitrate Module

When purchasing the Enhanced Bitrate Module, an "Opening Key"will be provided that allows the function to be installed in the Saturn BMain Control Unit.

1 Select SET USER LEVEL function (12)

2 Display current level.

3 Key in 5 9 6 at the "LEVEL" prompt.

4 Key in the "Opening Key" provided by the agent/Nera SatCom.

The Enhanced Bitrate Module is now installed.

Hotline call - activation

Figure 12a Example of Hotline interconnections.

The 107 and 108 are control circuits on the Saturn B MCU DTE portconnected to similar circuits on the DTE equipment. An adapter maybe required to convert between different electrical signal levels. The107 is split (Y-cable) and extended to pin 6 on the ICU Remote port.

The Comtech Modem provides data and timing signals, and aReceive Signal Indicator (RSI) status for the DTE (circuit 109).The RSI signal indicates that the connection is established andreceive data is delivered to the DTE equipment via circuit 104 (RD).

To set up a satellite connection:

• Verify that the MANUAL button on the ICU has not been pressed.

• Let the DTE turn the CallReq control circuit ON. Saturn B detectsa transition on its 108 input.

• If the request is accepted Saturn B turns ON circuit 107 andsignals CallAck to the DTE. The circuit 107 switches the ICU toEBM mode and connects the Comtech Modem into the RF path.

• At the same time Saturn B turns the antenna high power amplifierON establishing the satellite circuit.

• The pre-programmed Comtech Modem is now connected to asimilar modem at the Gateway LES end. Data can be transportedas soon as the modems are synchronised.

• If the call request cannot be accepted 107 will remain OFF. The DTEequipment will have to cycle the CallReq signal and try again later.

• The DTE equipment can clear a connection by turning CallReq OFF.

Channel deactivation

• When clearing a hotline/manual call, the Saturn B MCU switchescircuit 107 to OFF.

• During a manual call from ICU, an event such as rewind forces theSaturn B terminal to clear the channel causes the MCU to issue a‘NO CARRIER’ result code to the ICU.

The ICU then immediately disconnects the Comtech Modem from theantenna and reverts back to normal mode.If the MCU is power cycled the MCU will search for a satelliteaccording to pre-selected procedures and re-aquire the CESALchannel of the selected Lease Gateway LES.

With hotline based connections the DTE equipment must cycle thehotline circuit (CallReq) to re-establish the lease channel. Withmanual activation from ICU, the ICU will attempt to re-aquire thelease channel automatically as long as the EXT.MODEM indicator isflashing. With manual activation from handset, the operator mustredial to re-establish the lease channel.

Variable Bandwidth System (VBS) andVariable Bitrate (CN17Ext)

GeneralThe vbs and cn17ext are automatic demand assignment servicesavailable from some LES operators. The two service options havemany similarities. The Comtech Modem is programmed with a defaultconfiguration, but channels and data rates are set on a per call basis. The channels and data rates are negotiated through signallingsequences between the MES and the Lease Gateway.

The Comtech Modem setup is concluded by setting the modem inremote mode. The modem will then accept subsequent configurationcommand strings on its RS232 Remote Control port. This is achievedby connecting an RS232 cable between this port and the Saturn BPC port. The Saturn B reprograms the modem with channel numbersand data rates every time a satellite connection is being established.

With the vbs option Lease Gateway procedures can includetransferring selection information (destination address). For the hotdial access mode short number position 97 has been reserved forthis purpose. VBS users should consult Lease Gateway personell ondestination address requirements and program short number 97accordingly. Users are advised not to include an LES id and let theterminals use the default settings.Calls can initiated both from fixed and mobile.E

Variable Bandwidth Service (vbs)

Special extensions to the Inmarsat signalling system enable theLease Gateway LES to assign a different data rate than requested bythe terminal. This introduces added flexibility in RF frequency poolmanagement. Also, the in-band signalling supports an EDMAC sub-channel in the Comtech Modem which is used for transferringselection information. Consequently a Lease Gateway can supportcircuit switching based on a destination address from the terminal.

Note! Controls the Comtech Modem setup based on informationreceived from the Lease Gateway LES (frequencies, levels etc.).

To set up a satellite connection:

• Verify that the MANUAL button on the ICU has not been pressed• Let the DTE turn the CallReq control circuit ON. Saturn B detects

a transition on its 108 input and sends ‘Assignment Request’ tothe Lease Gateway.

• When receiving a ‘Channel Assignment’ from the Lease Gateway,Saturn B prompts the Comtech Modem to load data fromregister 1 and modify this with parameters received from theLease Gateway LES. Saturn B then turns circuit 107 ON, whichwill connect the ICU into the RF path and turn on the CallAckcircuit for the DTE.

• The reprogrammed Comtech Modem is now connected to asimilar modem at the LES end. Data can be transported as soonas the modems are synchronised.

• If the call request cannot be accepted 107 will remain OFF. TheDTE will have to cycle the CallReq signal and try again later.

• The DTE can clear a connection by turning CallReq OFF.• Saturn B clears a connection by turning 107 OFF.• A high-priority event (like cable rewind, radio silence) will cause

the Saturn B to clear the assigned channel by transmitting‘Channel Release’ to the Lease Gateway LES, and turn 107 OFF.The DTE equipment must then cycle the CallReq signal and makea new call request in order to re-establish the satellite circuit.

Variable Bandwidth Service (vbs) - manual call setup

Manual call setup can be initiated from the handset or a standardphone on a TEL port.

To set up a satellite connection:• Verify that the MANUAL button on the ICU has not been pressed.

• Set the handset/analogue phone in data call mode by lifting thehandset/phone and dialing *25*64#. Replace the handset/phone.

• The equipment will remain in this mode until the operator revertsto voice mode by dialing *25*#.

• To call, lift the handset/phone, hear the data dial tone, and dial anumber the regular way omitting the LES id.

• Terminate number with the ‘#’ key.• If the call is made from the handset HSD RINGING and HSD

CONNECTED will in turn be displayed.• The satellite circuit is now established over the Comtech Modem.

Let the handset/phone remain off-hook for the duration of the call.

• To clear the call place the handset/phone on-hook. Saturn B willclear the channel and revert the ICU to normal mode by turning107 OFF.

• A high-priority event (like cable rewind, radio silence) will causethe Saturn B to clear the assigned channel by transmitting‘Channel Release’ to the Lease Gateway, and turn 107 OFF. Thecall attempt must then be repeated to re-establish the circuit.

Variable Bitrate (cn17ext)

The Variable Bitrate option (cn17ext) provides a service similar to theVariable Bandwidth service option (vbs).

The Variable Bitrate (cn17ext) uses the Inmarsat signalling system toset up and clear a channel. There is no transfer of remote subscribernumber information. Calls can initiated both from fixed and mobile.

The cn17ext service option requires the following opening keys:

• high_speed_data• lease_mode• nera_ebm

Installation

Connecting upThe Dual Antenna Switch (DAS) is connected to the antenna portsof MCU A and MCU B. Control information from DAS is exchangedover the RS-485 bus SER1 and SER2 to the EXT_IO ports of bothMCUs. See next page.

The following is required:• Opening Key for Inmarsat Lease Mode for both Saturn B terminals.• Each MCU to be configured with:

- cut-out zones, using the Cutout Zones CONFIG function (88).- main or backup status, using the SPECIAL CONFIG function (78)

Antenna switchover

The MCU-A L-band signals (Rx/Tx) can be routed to Antenna-A or toAntenna-B. Switchover from one antenna to the other is achievedthrough the serial port of the Dual Antenna Switch. Only the L-bandsignals are switched.

The DC and control signals for tracking are always routed betweenMCU-A and Antenna-A and between MCU-B and Antenna-B.When MCU-A is using Antenna-B, MCU B will still receive L-bandsignals from Antenna-B for tracking.

Both Saturn Bm terminals can in principle be used separately whenthe Dual Antenna function is disabled.

Dual Antenna Switch power up

When the mains to the DAS is turned ON and the ACTIVE button isin its released state (ACTIVE indicator off), the DAS is set so thatMCU-A uses Antenna-A and MCU-B uses Antenna-B.

Only the ON indicator will light in this state. The two Saturn B installations will work as two separate independentsystems. When DAS is activated, the switch position is controlled through one ofthe DAS serial ports.

The two serial ports are connected in parallel when DAS is activated. The two ports are equal, so any MCU can be connected to any port.

Setting up cut-out zones

A special menu (Cut-Out Zones config function 88) on the DisplayHandset allows defining sectors in which the antenna view is blocked. There are three separate zone entries. Each zone is specified by lowazimuth, high azimuth, and elevation values along with enable/disablestatus.Azimuth values range from 0 through 360. Low azimuth value mustalways be less than the high azimuth (a zone cannot span the 360/0discontinuity). The elevation range is 0 through 90.See Setting up cut-out zones on the next page.Examples of cut-out zone combinations:

Zone entry Status Low azimuth High azimuth Elevation0 enabled 110 180 201 disabled 90 110 152 enabled 350 359 28

The azimuth values are relative to the ship’s heading (bow as 0 de-grees).The elevation cut-out zones start at 0 degrees up to the definedelevation values.

When the Antenna-A is tracking a satellite the antenna position ischecked against the defined cut-out zones. When the antenna isinside a defined cut-out zone a signal is passed from MCU-A prompt-ing the Dual Antenna Switch to shift the RF path of Antenna-B toMCU-A.MCU-A now receives channel signals through Antenna-B. MCU-Athen uses the antenna position information received from MCU-B tohold Antenna-A in position towards the satellite when inside the cut-out zone (antenna is blocked). Make sure that both MCUs have thesame and correct heading programmed in the READ/SET COMPASSfunction (29).Antenna-A will be reconnected to MCU-A when MCU-A decides thatAntenna-A again is outside the defined cut-out zone. The situation is reversed when Antenna-B enters a cut-out zone.MCU-B will now use antenna position information from MCU-A to holdAntenna-B in position for the duration of the blocking.
