CONCERT PROGRAM
WELCOME
Tonight is the ninth annual City of Perth Symphony in the City, and it is my great pleasure to welcome you to an evening of beautiful music from your West Australian Symphony Orchestra and Chorus. On behalf of WASO, we are thrilled to share this wonderful event with the people of Perth, and with regional Western Australians thanks to a live broadcast and webcast.
This evening’s concert is particularly special; it will be the first time WASO Principal Conductor Asher Fisch conducts the City of Perth Symphony in the City. Maestro Fisch has had a profound influence on WASO musicians, leading the Orchestra to truly exceptional form which you will experience tonight.
My sincere thanks go to our two major sponsors, the City of Perth and Lotterywest. Each year, our vision for this event can be realised thanks to the generous support of these committed partners.
Thanks must also go to Wesfarmers Arts, WASO’s Principal Partner, and media partners The West Australian and 720 ABC Perth.
Enjoy the concert and we look forward to welcoming you to a WASO concert in 2016 at our performance home, Perth Concert Hall.
The City of Perth Symphony in the City is an extraordinary event that annually brings Perth together to celebrate the cultural richness and beauty of our capital city. It is an opportunity to enjoy the inspiring musicianship of the West Australian Symphony Orchestra and the WASO Chorus under the stars.
We are again proud to partner with the West Australian Symphony Orchestra, and we thank Lotterywest for their generous support that ensures the success of this event each year.
On behalf of the City of Perth, we are thrilled to welcome WASO’s Principal Conductor Asher Fisch to conduct his first City of Perth Symphony in the City, and we would like to thank the many staff, artists and volunteers for their valuable contribution and for sharing their immense talents with us tonight.
Tonight you will hear highlights from the WASO 2016 season, including well-known classics and music from blockbuster film scores, culminating in Tchaikovsky’s explosive 1812 Overture as the finale.
The City is extremely proud to contribute to this major cultural celebration and on behalf of the City of Perth I hope you have a wonderful evening.
On behalf of Lotterywest I am delighted to welcome you to the 2015 Symphony in the City. We are pleased to partner with the City of Perth to present this concert to the Western Australian community.
Lotterywest is proud to provide grant support to the West Australian Symphony Orchestra to help stage this event and the broadcast to regional audiences all over WA. Each year Symphony in the City gives the community the opportunity to experience the incredible talent of their state orchestra.
The reason Lotterywest is able to support Symphony in the City and many other community events that bring people together right around our state is through money raised from the sale of Lotterywest Games. Every time you play a Lotterywest Game, 34 cents in every dollar is returned to the WA community.
I would also like to acknowledge the Department of Regional Development and Westlink for their role in facilitating the regional broadcast as well as the staff and musicians at WASO, the WASO Chorus and the volunteers who make this event possible.
We hope you enjoy the evening and wish you all a safe and happy festival season.
