Saratoga Film ForumSARATOGA SPRINGS - 320 Broadway, Saratoga Springs, saratogafilmforum.org. 518 584 3456. Tickets: $7/$5 members and students with ID - THE SELFISH GIANT, Thursday, Jan. 23, 7:30 p.m., Friday, Jan. 24, 7:30 p.m., Sunday, Jan.

26, 3 p.m. Written and directed by Clio Barnard • 91 min. • UK • 2013 • Not Rated. The Selfish Giant is a contemporary fable about 13 year old Arbor and his best friend Swifty. Excluded from school and outsiders in their own neigh-bourhood, the two boys meet Kitten, a local scrapdealer, and begin collecting scrap metal for him using a horse and cart. However, when Arbor begins to emulate Kitten by be-coming greedy and exploitative, tensions soon start to build, leading to a tragic event which transforms them all.Inspired by the Victorian fairytale of the same name by Oscar Wilde, the characters of The Selfish Giant are based on people Barnard met while researching The Arbor in and around the Buttershaw Estate in Bradford, including a 14 year old boy called Matty who had been scavenging metal to sell to scrap dealers from the age of 11. Matty had built a makeshift stable in his mum’s council house garden to keep his horse who would pull his cart for scrapping, and could make up to £200 a day when scrap prices were high, but his business and livelihood were threatened when the local council threatened to end his family’s tenancy if the stable wasn’t taken down. By melding together these two contradictory genres, fairytales and social realism, Bar-nard’s aspiration is to tell a contemporary, realist fable.

toward post-graduation goals. We are seeking adult female mentors to work with students on a weekly basis. As a mentor you would spend time with and get to know your student, while developing a relationship that provides sup-port and guidance. If you are looking for some meaningful volunteer work, this may be for you. This program focuses not as much on job skill mentoring, but more on providing a positive role model in the student’s life. You will help the student to develop core values and “encourage young women to discover their dreams, to believe in endless pos-sibilities while empowering them to make it happen”. The organization is currently looking for mentors in the Clifton Park to Glens Falls areas.
