Message from Board President, Designer Tag Sale

Bob Fottler took the first shift at being a cashier for the Designer Tag Sale. At the end of the day he totaled the accounts and gave us the good news.

Norma Kwenski and Carole Hollland were cashiers and were joined by Phil Stevens, Ruth Ann Smith and Sandra Gutowski.

With HSOSC Board President, Jane Kirschner-Tuccillo (far right) are volunteers Ruth Ann Smith and Ken Sutherland, who priced merchandise, displayed it artistically in the Crocker Memorial Church, handled pick ups, delivery and worked every aspect of the Designer Tag Sale. HSOSC is not losing their phone number!

Designer Tag Sale volunteers Kate Holmes and co-chair of the event Lynn Harding spent most of the Friday before the sale sorting and arranging items for display. The pews of the church were moved to the side of the room and became display areas for glamorous silk throw pillows, paintings, chandeliers, elegant serving pieces and crystal glassware.

A first-time feature of Pioneer Day, a

celebration of Old Time Florida life held in November, was a Designer Tag Sale

organized in the Crocker Memorial Church by co-chairs Lynn Harding, Marsha Fottler and Judy Alexander. Interior designers and

many members of HSOSC donated home decor items. Phil Stevens (left), volunteer.

I have been traveling all over the country lately collecting inspirational historic preservation ideas! We’ve come such a long way here in our own historic corner of Pioneer Park, but with additional volunteer help we can do much more. Angels keep dropping into our laps. The latest is chef Carlos Cruz at the Broadway Bar, who was looking for a site to plant his herb garden. The rooftop of the Broadway Bar wouldn’t work so now guess who is going to be tending our little HSOSC herb garden in front of the Gift Shop? Thanks, Chef Carlos! We sincerely thank Big Earth Landscape Supply at 6625 Bee Ridge Road for the garden dirt and compost. And thank you to Charlie of Ramate Construction who picked it up and delivered it. I thank my husband John for digging the plot and lining it with historic bricks. I recently spent the day with Harriet Burns Stieff and her husband Lorin and historian Sue Blue, touring all of the Owen Burns sites with the crew from Jack Perkins’s Gulf Coast Journal TV show. Watch for the program in January. Hope to see you at our covered dish joint Holiday Party with the DAR and the Sarasota Alliance for Historic Preservations, (see events calendar). Plan to shop our Gift Shop that evening. This year we are showcasing 37 artisans who create unique items that reference our regional arts and cultural scene. Plan to sign up for some of our enriching courses held on the back porch of the Bidwell-Wood house. Something for everyone!
