BEFORE WE BEGIN

1.FACTORY FARMING

system of raising livestock in strict and confined conditions

3. ANTHROPOCENTRISMa human-centered way of

thinking

2. SENTIENCEthe ability to feel, perceive or experience

WHAT IS FACTORY FARMING?❖ Concentrated Animal

Feeding Operations (CAFOs)

❖ Started in early 1970’s ❖ Less space for the

animals=Less costs for industries

❖ Increased the production of animal byproducts

MY STANCE

The US should increase legislation for factory farming corporations to protect farm

animals, the environment and the health of Americans.

IMPORTANCE

Page 7: Sarah woeppel presentation final

220,000,000,000gallons of animal waste are dumped by factory farms onto farmland and into waterways every year

99%of all farm animals in the US are housed in CAFOs

10,153,000,000land animals were killed for consumption in 2011 by the US

THE EARTH

Water ○Depletion of freshwater

○80% of water use in US is used for agriculture

Emissions○CAFOs are the main producers of methane gas

○Irreversible damage to atmosphere

Page 10: Sarah woeppel presentation final

EFFECTS ON THE EARTH

Page 11: Sarah woeppel presentation final

The USDA needs to improve regulations on the emissions of factory farms to protect the atmosphere.

THE ANIMALS

Chickens, Pigs, and Cows:○Body mutilations and hormones○Confinement and neglect○A life of misery and torment

“The question is not Can they reason? nor, Can they talk? but, Can they suffer?”-Jeremy Bentham

& YOU○Factory farmed foods are loaded with antibiotics and hormones

○Excessive use of antibiotics on animals can create an antibiotic-resistant bacteria

○E. coli, Mad Cow Disease, and Salmonella

Page 18: Sarah woeppel presentation final

THE EFFECTS OF HORMONES

Hormones are not only unnatural to animals, but when consumed they can have negative effects on the human body.

Page 19: Sarah woeppel presentation final

WHAT ABOUT EFFICIENCY?

○Ethics over Economics

○The risk of permanent damage to the environment trumps efficiency

○Do something NOW or pay for it later

Page 20: Sarah woeppel presentation final

CONCLUSION○Stricter regulations on factory farms protect the environment, farm animals and human health

○Factory Farms have already damaged so much, and unnecessary cruelty CANNOT persist

○The USDA has to institute new laws on factory farms and enforce them to properly govern the agriculture industry
