Sarah Tucker Strait Art Submission 2010

Page 2: Sarah Tucker

Thank you for taking the time to view my submissions for the 2010 Strait Art show. I am featuring 8 pieces with an explanation of why I think they are relevant to the theme of the show as well as a little back ground story of each piece. After these I have included copies of some clippings, pictures of current work and still more images can be viewed at www.tuckerart.com

I have spent the last 15 months showing work at Art Front Gallery and have been featured in the PDN in conjunction with the gallery and Art Rock events.

At this time I am focusing on mixed media and movie making.

Once again, thank you for taking the time to view this presentation.

I think all of you do a great job at the PAFAC and would be honored to be a part of Strait Art 2010.

Relevancy to the show: This piece documents a bizarre, relatively recent local event.

In 2009, rumors of Gottshalk’s impending closure were confirmed when a large number of hired men bearing a resemblance to seasoned carnies were stationed at prominent places throughout Port Angeles holding signs announcing the liquidation of Gottshalk’s merchandise. These men stood at their posts hour after hour, day after day, each day in the same spot as the infamous sale wore on and on. My favorite sign holder stood out in front of the store itself. This is a picture of him resting after he’s exhausted himself trying to light his cigarette for several minutes without letting go of his sign.

Royal Blood-2009Acrylic on canvas 10x10

Relevancy to the show: This piece has blood and beer. Many College students tend to like blood and beer.

The subject poses as if

he’s resting from an exertion. In actuality he is very drunk and has just tried to pet a viciously barking dog. He has wrapped his bleeding fingers in toilet paper and is relaxing by a roaring fire.

Relevancy to the show:

This piece was featured prominently in the January 8th, 2010 issue of the PDN Spotlight.

In the time that this piece has spent hanging in Art Front Gallery I’ve been struck by the many different ways people interpret what is going on in the picture. The real story is, of course, very mundane, but not the interpretations.

Boo-Gouache, Wax, and Acrylic on Board 15x12

Relevancy to the show: This piece could possibly resonate with students; a cocky young male, a crappy car, a puppy and the cops.

The real story of the 22 year old model in this picture is that he was somewhat living in his car because he still lived at home, he had gotten a puppy and his mother forbade him to have a puppy. So he lived in his car with the puppy. He named the dog Boo. I have him posing outside of the Gateway center by across the street from the eternally parked cop car.

Ka-2009 Acrylic and Gouache on Board 12x17

Relevancy to the show: The crow is an important local symbol with many fans.

A friend of mine carries peanuts in his pocket to feed the crows on his walk to work. He says they remember him. In the back ground is an homage to Van Gogh, one white iris in a group of blue. This piece represents the beauty of being able to be alone.

UntitledGouache, Wax and Acrylic on Paper 21x27

Relevancy to the show: This piece represents the feeling of mystery while insidethe beautiful forests of our area. Along with the awe that the forests of our area inspire there is a foreboding, a feeling that something unforeseen can go terribly wrong in the woods. The expression and angle of the child’s face has caused viewers at Art Front to immediately remember a time in their life when they felt they had no idea what had just happened to them. I have not titled this piece to preserve the mystery.

Seven Sins Voodoo Doll Wax, Acrylic and Wood 20” tall ½” thick

Relevancy to the show: This piece represents the power of self improvement as well as a melding of diverse spiritual systems, qualities that I think are strong in our area if you look for them.

One can sit day after day and point fingers of blame at others for shortcomings, but nothing really happens until one points at oneself. When most people see a voodoo doll they think four thoughts: Those things don’t work. Do those things work? I hope no one uses one on me! Who would I use one on? The answer in this case is this doll is you and you use it on yourself. The number seven shows up again and again in different spiritual systems, the Seven Sins being very famous and remarkably accurate. This doll’s purpose is to draw attention to the particular qualities in ones self that need attention by choosing to remove or insert wooden pins.

Miss America-2008Cedar 25” tall x5” wide

Relevancy to the show: Carved from local cedar this piece makes people laugh and could possibly be a good fit somewhere in the Art Center courtyard for Strait Art or high up off of the ground in Webster Woods. I would be willing to anchor or attach her in whatever way is needed. This piece documents a personal moment when I was a little kid and learned that people also cry when they are happy. It was while watching the Miss America pageant sometime in the 70’s. To my surprise, when the winner was announced her face became strangely contorted and she burst into tears, black mascara began running in streams down to her neck. It was hysterical and I never forgot it.
