Dear Friends of Da Camera,

With the 2018-19 season, Da Camera explores the multiple ways in which the present and future are informed by the past. In both chamber music and jazz, there is an ongoing dialogue with the great composers and performers who came before us and serve as inspiration. This continuum of time is especially meaningful to me this season, as it marks my 25th as Da Camera’s artistic director, and so I find myself both looking back and ahead. Continuing to make connections between music and art, literature, theater and ideas, we offer musical programs inspired by poet John Ashbery, artist Cy Twombly and the explosively creative birth of the 20th century in Vienna 1900. With such masters as Richard Goode, Jordi Savall, Dr. Lonnie Smith, Chucho Valdés and the New York Philharmonic String Quartet we are in the presence of performers embodying the greatest of musical traditions; and the younger generation finds its voice through pianist Aaron Diehl, composer Matthew Aucoin, vocalist Jazzmeia Horn and the genre-bending Russian Renaissance – all showing evidence of new ways of interpreting the past we inherit and making it relevant to today’s world. This continuum of past and future in art continues to be a powerful source of inspiration to me personally, and I look forward to sharing it with our adventurous and ever-expanding Da Camera audiences in this very special season.

Winner of six Grammy Awards and three Latin Grammy Awards, the Cuban pianist, composer, arranger, and bandleader Chucho Valdés has been a key figure in the evolution of Afro-Cuban jazz for the past 50 years. In 1972, Valdés released his fourth album, a trio recording with bass and batá drums entitled simply, Jazz Batá. Decades later, Chucho Valdés returns to the Jazz Batá sound – blending jazz with traditional rhythms of the sacred batá – in a journey to discover new interpretations of classic forms.

Gustav Klimt’s sensual paintings and Max Klinger’s erotic prints are a window into a world of new ideas. More than a concert, In the Garden of Dreams takes you inside an imagined Viennese music room where a solitary pianist playing Brahms’s last works gradually transforms into the symbol-rich garden of Schoenberg’s The Book of the Hanging Gardens. In the Garden of Dreams moves from dawn to the dark of night, from a protected Viennese interior to a decaying landscape where Schoenberg’s haunting song cycle reaches its shattering conclusion as reality, dream, memory, and hallucination merge in the mind of an obsessed lover.

Winner of six Grammy Awards and three Latin Grammy Awards, the Cuban pianist, composer, arranger, and bandleader Chucho Valdés has been a key figure in the evolution of Afro-Cuban jazz for the past 50 years. In 1972, Valdés released his fourth album, a trio recording with bass and batá drums entitled simply, Jazz Batá. Decades later, Chucho Valdés returns to the Jazz Batá sound – blending jazz with traditional rhythms of the sacred batá – in a journey to discover new interpretations of classic forms.

The film introduced many listeners to the astoundingly beautiful music of the early French Baroque. Savall and his Le Concert des Nations performed the soundtrack music and they return to this sublime repertoire in a concert that features poetic music for solo and multiple viols, graceful dances, dramatic character pieces and more.

A rare showing of Cy Twombly’s monumental painting, The Treatise on the Veil, is the occasion for this unique musical event at the Menil. Da Camera introduces America’s rising star composer Matthew Aucoin to Houston with an intimate preview of his opera, Eurydice, prior to its premiere at the Metropolitan Opera in 2019-20, and welcomes countertenor Anthony Roth Costanzo and baritone Kelly Markgraf in their Da Camera debuts.

The timeless Greek myth of Orpheus entering the underworld in search of his deceased beloved, Eurydice, has inspired artists for centuries – from the beginning of opera in Italy to today. From Monteverdi to early electronic music through late 20th-century compositions, this program explores the powerful influences of mythology on visual art and music – in time past and time present.
