From the ChairmanDear Friends and Supporters,

Once again, your loyalty has been matched by your financial support, as recognized in this annual report.

You can be certain that by providing critical financial assistance, there is very positive energy evident in the students - forty-four of whom are new to our school this year, another significant annual increase.

Our school is blessed to be led by Sarah Fortier and her team, led by Phil Hall. The returning faculty and staff are recognized as among the best in the business. Our new young teachers, including Leonard Bartenstein ‘13, a third generation Mountie, have arrived with great enthusiasm. Our administrative team has been bolstered by Dan Elliot (A.D.) and Lisa Tracy (Business Manager).

Our partnerships have been strengthened with our Principal also serving as the leader of Christ the King with new ways to collaborate with staff and activities. This will yield dividends in the future.

Thanks to a Sisters of Saint Joseph Unity Grant, we have a strong partnership with the College of Saint Joseph.

Finally, our students, always involved in service to others, are part of a new student leadership group called the “Wave Runners”, made up of members of the National Honor Society, Student Ambassadors and student government. They are learning leadership skills by working in service, outreach and other community activities, enabling them to take ownership of our community service, marketing and programming efforts.

In conclusion, these improvements would simply not be possible without your generosity.

Mount Saint Joseph Academy has influenced the lives of so many people throughout the last one hundred and thirty-five years. The memories that the alumni of Mount Saint Joseph Academy have of their years spent on Convent Avenue remain at the forefront of many minds today. This is evident in the many reunions that take place every year. At these reunions, stories are shared and smiles and laughter prevail. As Monsignor LaVallee said, “MSJ is not a place. MSJ is not a building. We are MSJ.” These words continue to ring true in the hearts and minds of the many students that walked through the doors on Convent Avenue and who are still members of the MSJ community.

Today Mount Saint Joseph Academy continues to provide a superior educational experience to students in Rutland county and beyond. MSJ is truly “A Place to Belong” as all are welcome: the student body currently includes representatives from New York City, New York State, China, South Korea, Vietnam and Haiti. MSJ provides students with an education for the whole person: academically, spiritually and physically. We are proud to state that for the fourth consecutive year, MSJ students have had 100% college placement with students attending phenomenal colleges and universities around the country. MSJ athletes continue their devotion to sports at the collegiate level and are highly successful team members. Mount Saint Joseph Academy students are leaders in today’s world. They move on in life from Convent Avenue confident and resolute, charging forward into higher education and beyond, having been taught through their high school education the valuable lessons necessary to be successful.

I am proud to be an alumnus of Mount Saint Joseph Academy and to stand among those who came before me and after in the halls on Convent Ave. I, too, hold the memories made in the forefront of my mind and I was blessed with the education I received at Mount Saint Joseph Academy. Mount Saint Joseph Academy is grateful to you, our donors, who give of your time and financial resources to ensure that a Catholic education is possible in Rutland, Vermont. MSJ is thriving and will continue to do so long into the future because of the many supporters of Mount Saint Joseph Academy.

Mount St. Joseph Academy’s Veritas et Puritas Society

Legacy gifts have been among the most powerful gifts received by Mount St. Joseph Academy. MSJ is very appreciative of its generous supporters, whose gifts have ensured that MSJ keeps its doors open to students when families cannot afford the full cost of a private high school education.

To honor the charitable community members who have chosen to include Mount St. Joseph Academy in their estate planning, MSJ has created the Veritas et Puritas Society. The creation of the Veritas et Puritas Society is a perfect complement to the MSJ community’s robust tradition of lifetime annual giving, and allows us to thank our members during their lifetime. The members of the Veritas et Putitas Society will include alumni, parents, and friends who, through thoughtful estate planning, deferred giving, and other forms of planned giving, ensure that resources will be available to support MSJ’s tradition of educating the whole child, far into the future.

Around the Mount

• MSJ’s enrollment has grown nearly 45% over the past two years.

• 100% of the Class of 2017 are attending 4 year colleges. The graduates were accepted to an average of 5.33 colleges, and received an average of $150K +/- in college scholarships.

• Twenty-seven out of twenty-eight graduates earned varsity sports letters while attending MSJ, and seventeen of the graduates carried a 3.5 GPA or higher while participating in two activities and/or sports.

• Four members of the Class of 2017 are benefitting from the Sisters of Saint Joseph Unity grant, which will provide them with two years tuition free at the College of Saint Joseph.

• The late Eileen O’Rourke (MSJ ‘52) was honored as the Philanthropist of the Year. A paralegal who lived most of her life in Washington DC and who was a leadership donor during her lifetime, she left one-half of her estate to MSJ. Her bequest is being used for a capital fund that will help ensure the future of MSJ.

• Valedictorian Jenna Eaton was named the DAR First Place Winner in the Good Citizens Scholarship Program for the Northeastern Division (including all of the New England States plus New York) and the recipient of the Wendy’s High School Heisman Female Award for the State of Vermont.

• Third generation Mountie Bryn McClallen became the leading scorer in Mountie soccer history, scoring 143 points over her career at MSJ.

• Last fall, the MSJ-Poultney football team made the playoffs. This fall, men’s soccer has returned at MSJ, for the first time since 2011.

• In March, the MSJ women won their third consecutive state basketball championship, and the MSJ men made the basketball state championship, where they lost a thriller by only 2 points.

• MSJ and Christ the King School have implemented a new joint administrative structure, which will create synergies for the benefit of both schools’ students.

• The Alma Gibbs Donchian Foundation generously provided a $12,500 grant for the completion of the gym roof to help protect the Lenny Burke Court and Martin McDonough Gymnasium.

• MSJ announced a fundraising campaign to support renovating the locker rooms and to name the men’s locker room as The Tony Zingali Locker Room.
