This company’s image is playful and the director wanted the logo to reflect this. The challenge, therefore, was to create a brand identity that fullfilled the director’s brief but would also sit comfortably in a corporate environment. The muted colours and uncomplicated lettering achieve this.

Use of logo Space around logoAlways allow sufficient space around logo, to avoid over-crowding.

Minimum sizeThe logo should never be smaller than 25mm wide

ColoursThe corporate colours are grey and yellow, however the yellow in the logo colour can be changed to colours within the corporate palette when necessary.

Each targetted sector has its own colour and can be used at 100% tint or 40% tint.

REDESIGNING ANY BRAND IS A CHALLENGE, BUT WHEN TINY LITTLE CREATURES HAVE TO BE INCLUDED IN THE LOGO IT REACHES NEW LEVELS.

This magazine had been hosted on Issuu for years and it was time for a redesign and new format. We worked closely with a software developer and created a back end system that allowed more flexibility for the sales people and an entirely new approach for design.

USE TECHNOLOGY TO YOUR ADVANTAGE Despite the temptation of giving in to the lure of technology and its distractions, there are a surprising number of apps and tools that can help you stay focused. It does of course depend on your personal habits and interests, but once you’ve identified which distracting habit wastes your working time, select an app that will help you achieve your goals, such as Gero Time Management or 30/30.

SCHEDULE DISTRACTIONSPerhaps you’re the sort of person who can’t completely rid themselves of distractions, no matter what actions you take to stall the urges. Have no fear - you can easily make these distractions work for you by using them as a reward after cracking out a solid chunk of work. Start out with distractions that you know are good for you, such as messaging friends through Facebook, Twitter and WhatsApp and work up from there. But remember that you have a strict schedule to stick to, no matter what updates come through on your timeline.

TAKE BABY STEPSIt’s never easy to rid yourself of distractions over long periods of time. Maybe you’re the sort of person who works best by taking baby steps and overcoming your addiction over time. Start by confiscating your phone and then move onto enforcing a strict no doodle ban – once you’ve mastered such self-discipline nothing will stop you from achieving your potential at the office.

SHUT YOURSELF OUT FROM THE WORLD Let’s be honest, the world’s full of distractions. Technology’s both a gift and a curse in the work place and avoiding the temptations of checking texts and tweets during work hours is always a challenge. Put your phone away in a safe, hidden location where you won’t be distracted by buzzing Facebook notifications, and restrict your email intake to work business only. These rules only apply to working hours: during your break times the world’s you own, so catch up with trending topics on social media then.

WORKING WITH A SOFTWARE DEVELOPER TO CREATE A WHOLE NEW PRODUCT MADE ME LOOK AT THE PROJECT THROUGH A DIFFERENT LENS.

One of the company’s most profitable magazines needed an overhaul. The design was five years old so I was tasked with creating a new look magazine, a new logo and a new website. We had received feedback from readers that fueled a lot of the changes I made and I worked with the editor and head of sales throughout the process.

THE DEMOGRAPHIC OF THIS MAGAZINE DICTATED THE WAY I APPROACHED IT. THE DESIGN HAD TO BE CLEAN & FLEXIBLE.

Page 10: Sarah Chivers Portfolio LR

I redesigned the company’s website using Squarespace. I wireframed the site, designed it and drew original illustrations for each section. This was a fun project and, although not the most technical, was still a learning curve in a new medium.

Page 11: Sarah Chivers Portfolio LR

THE DESIGN FOR THIS SITE EVOLVED DRAMATICALLY FROM THE FIRST DRAUGHT TO THE FINAL VERSION. IT INVOLVED MORE OF THE CREATURES!

Page 12: Sarah Chivers Portfolio LR

The director and editorial team were finding the CMS in the old website hard to navigate so we decided to move over to Wordpress. I have created a website that is attractive, functional and easy to use, despite the complex and occasionally vague brief. Phew.
