Comparisons between light and spatial orientation were explored in this three-week value study. In my comparison, I investigated the similarities between the Charles and Ray Eames house in Pasadina, CA and the University of Minnesota’s own Recreation Center.

ARCH 3450: ANALYTICAL MODEL MAKINGPROF. LANCE LAVINE

This project was separated into groups of two students each to analytically dissect the concepts that formed the design of a local work of architecture. In collaboration with John Jurgens, my group studied Rapson Hall on the University of Minnesota campus. We created four models - a wall, floor and ceiling model, as well as a model that represented their amalgamation.

My partner and I dedicated most of our time to conversation surrounding our interpretation of each part of the building. In our final butterboard models, we represented the way each part of the building felt when we were standing in the space.

PRELIMINARY SKETCHES

In this project, I dissected a structure made of playing cards into individual components and illustrated five simple steps for

re-assembly. I started with hand-sketches to better understand

each component of my card structure. Once I established

lineweights for each type of crease, cut, and fold represented

in the structure, I translated this linework into Adobe Illustrator for

my final iterations.

SELECTED STUDIES IN WATERCOLORFALL 2014

ARCH 4321: WATERCOLOR IN ARCHITECTUREPROF. MONICA FOGG

Watercolor was used as the primary medium in these color and value studies. Gestalt

Principles were also employed to strengthen the compositional qualities in each painting.

UNDERSTANDING SPATIAL RELATIONSHIPSFALL 2013ARCH 2301: DRAWING IN ARCHITECTUREPROF. ANDRZEJ PIOTROWSKI06

This three-week long drawing study explored the spatial relationships of an established space. I studied the main staircase in Steven Holl’s Rapson Hall Addition. As exemplified by my sketches, I focused on the way the staircase’s spatial orientation creates unique relationships between both the adjacent interior and exterior environments.

SKETCHES EXPLORING EACH INDIVIDUAL SPACE

This project asked us to imagine and analyze subterranean spaces based on the creation of a single cardboard model. My partner and I focused our project on the way light, texture, and proximity would impact the experience of the space we created. We imagined the journey within our space to be a series of isolated experiences. The deeper one moved within our subterranean space, the older and more natural the building materials became - ranging from brick and concrete to stone and dirt. As one journeyed through this space, the emotions one experi-enced would likewise become more primal - ranging from intrigue and curiosity to fear and instinctual reactions to the surrounding environment.

This project was done in collaboration with Kacey Strandemo. However, excluding the physical creation of our final cardboard model, all images, sketches and renderings shown here are of my own creation.
