Educating Children, Supporting Families, Instilling Hope

Reflections from the Director‘s Desk:

Leisa Pollander, Executive Director

―Alone we can do so little, together we can do so much.‖

- Helen Keller

The above quote rings so true to me in light of the SHCC‘s

accomplishments of the past year. The Center has

strengthened its bond with the King Street Center (our

―sister‖ organization!) in a host of ways. The Chittenden

Bank and the A. D. Henderson Foundation supported

proposals to mesh elements of both agencies Teen pro-

grams, allowing youth from the two organizations to mingle

in a variety of activities. King Street staff are welcoming

SHCC kids into the Lemonade Stand on Church Street,

learning valuable employment and life skills. SHCC and King Street staff are supporting kids in

learning about the great outdoor possibilities Vermont has to offer. The Bob and Maggie Green

Youth Adventure Camp participants have been kayaking, swimming, mountain biking and hiking

(despite the challenges this summer‘s weather has provided!).

Continuing collaboration with the Burlington School District supported 150+ middle school

students to learn new skills on a variety of topics ranging from sailing, swimming, gardening,

stained glass, and rock music composition – the range of activities seemed endless. Countless par-

ents, teachers and community members have reached out to Center staff to express sincere

appreciation that youth had safe, well-supervised venues in which to challenge themselves. And –

the kids had fun!

We are looking forward to new partnerships in the works. Spectrum Youth Services and the

SHCC are exploring a mutual relationship that would support drug and alcohol prevention efforts

in our teen drop-in sites. King Street Center, Champlain Valley Head Start and the SHCC are

exploring a new partnership to provide appealing and nutritious food service to our preschool

program. Together, we can and do make a difference in the lives of kids and families.

New Arrivals

The Sara Holbrook Community Center was

buzzing with action this July as forty-six

English Language Learners, Pre-K through

Grade 8, attended a summer school pro-

gram designed especially for them. Integral

to an enrichment program for English Lan-

guage Learners is thematic instruction that

incorporates academics with hands-on learning activities. Once again, Shel-

burne Farms Educational Programs provided our participants with a fun-filled

week, learning about all the aspects of farm life and exploring other natural

wonders of this exquisite landscape. Other highlights of this year‘s program

included a performance by local performer, Jon Gailmor, events on the Burling-

ton‘s Waterfront honoring the International Celebration of the Quadricenten-

nial of Lake Champlain, and Fletcher Free Library‘s Summer Reading Program.

Other partners that contributed to the success of

the program were Burlington School District and

Burlington College. Many thanks to Sara Hol-

brook staff and the generous partners and stake-

holders who make this collaborative effort an

annual event that benefits the English Language

Learners of the Burlington area.

Barnes Summer World Academy

Kids in the Barnes Summer World Academy were busy with tons of activities

this summer. Despite the weather, 59 children enrolled in the six week long

program were able to get to North Beach for some sun and swimming,

participate in the WigWag Festival at Roosevelt Park, the Cardboard Box

Parade down Church Street, blueberry picking at the Charlotte Berry Farm , hik-

ing at Mt. Philo, catching pop flies at the Lake Monsters game, arts & crafts at

Barnes and much more.

Bob & Maggie Green Youth Adventure Program

This summer the teens from the Bob and Maggie Green Youth Adventure Program have had

the opportunity to experience a variety of outings, activities, and excursions around the state.

Participants have had ‗summer adventures‘ around the state, from Stowe to Swanton, visiting

natural areas, climbing mountains, and cooling-off in lakes and streams. During each adven-

ture, the teens were able to use their direct experiences to clarify personal values, increase

confidence, and build self esteem. Seth, a high school participant, talked about how the

program has ―…helped me to have something to do, rather than just hanging out inside. The

activities are always interesting and I get to hang out with a group of kids that I normally

wouldn‘t hang out with. I like how the kids are so different but everyone supports each

other.‖

During the summer, Sara Holbrook teens have been able to get a taste of a true Vermont

summer. We‘ve been hiking, cycling, picked berries and explored local parks. We‘ve toured Lake Champlain by boat,

conquered difficult rock climbs, and gotten muddy on mountain bike trails. Many of the activities have been both

physically and emotionally challenging and the group has worked together to overcome obstacles, helped struggling

participants, and rewarded each others efforts. After overcoming each challenge, it‘s often

time to try something undemanding such as laying on the beach, eating hamburgers, or

swimming in the lake, all favorites of the teens! While the activities have been

wide-ranging they have all shared a common theme—summer is an adventure!

Sara Holbrook has had the wonderful opportunity to partner with King Street Youth Cen-

ter on a variety of activities this summer. Twice a week, both groups of teens have met at

the pool to swim, play games, ride skateboards, and share a barbeque meal together. The

partnership has allowed for the teens to get to know each other, create friendships, and

has even allowed for some playful competition during a collaborative dodge ball game.

There have been a number of returning participants who have helped to lead many of the

trips and deserve a lot of credit for the success of the program; thanks to long term SHCC

teens Seth Pidgeon, Carly Pagliuca, and Alyssa Boozan for all their hard work!

Burlington Middle School Summer Program

Summer is an exciting time for the Sara Holbrook Community Center

(SHCC). Teens from the North End of Burlington have ventured near and

far, participating in fun and creative programs offered at the New North End

Youth Center (NNEYC) located on Gosse Court. SHCC offered 39 structured

activities at Hunt Middle School this summer. Setting a record for number of

participants, the program hit a high of 150 students this summer! Offering a

diversity of programs has allowed the teens a unique opportunity to learn

movie making, stained glass, rock music composition, knitting, biking, wood working, felting, African dance &

drumming, gardening, soccer, creative writing and more. This summer thirty-six teens were able to explore

Lake Champlain through sailing lessons offered at Lake Champlain Community Sailing Center. Twenty-two

students worked on their photography skills; and eleven students spent time

in 4H programs where they learned to work with large farm animals. A

group of eight students facilitated interviews and research on individuals

and families along North Avenue in order to help their local histories come

alive. These programs are offered free of charge through grants and

donations. Without such funding, youth between the ages of 11-14 years

old would not have the chance to spend the month of July connecting to

artistic, technological and athletic learning. This is the NNEYC‘s 11th year of

summer programming.
