Starting the Database With SAPDBA Starting the Database With SAPDBA In most cases you don’t have to manually start the database, since it starts automatically when R/3 is started. However, there are some cases, (such as a database reorganization, in which you might need to start the database without starting the R/3 instance). This section shows how to do so using SAPDBA. In the NT Services Control Panel, the status of the Oracle and R/3 Services must be “started” before the database and SAP System can be started. By default, the Oracle and R/3 Services are set to start automatically when the NT system is started, so this should not be an issue. 1. Check the title bar of the Program Manager to be sure that you are logged on to your local host as user <sapsid>adm . 2. From the Main program group, start the MS-DOS Command Prompt. 1 2

This chapter shows how to start and stop the Oracle Database using the SAP Database Administration(SAPDBA) utility and how to start and stop the R/3 System using the SAP Service Manager .

Starting the Database With SAPDBAStarting the Database With SAPDBA

In most cases you don’t have to manually start the database, since it starts automatically when R/3 isstarted. However, there are some cases, (such as a database reorganization, in which you might need tostart the database without starting the R/3 instance). This section shows how to do so using SAPDBA.

3. Follow the path File →→ Exit to closethe SAP Service Manager window.

4. If you have the QuickSlice utility,start it by entering qslice at theCommand Prompt. (QuickSlice is partof the Windows NT Resource Kit.)

Ensure that all disp+work.exe processesstop running by watching their bluebar activity in the QuickSlice. Waituntil the blue bars are no longer activebefore starting a SAPGUI.

There are certain administrative tasks that must be done before stopping an R/3 system.Please complete the tasks as directed in the following steps!!

1. To check for active background jobs, follow the path System →→

Services →→ Jobs→→ Job Overview todisplay all current jobs.

2. Enter a wildcard ( * ) in the Job namefield.

3. Enter a wildcard ( * ) in the User name field.

4. By default, the From and To startdate fields will contain the currentdate. Change the From date to 3days prior to the current date inorder to view any long batch jobsthat may still be running.

5. In the Only jobs with status groupbox, deselect all but the Activecheckbox.

6. Click the Execute button to view the

batch jobs.

7. If you see the message in the Statusbar, “No job matches the selectioncriteria,” then no active jobs werefound and you can click OK to

proceed to the next step. If active jobs are found, they should eitherbe canceled or left to finish beforestopping the R/3 or databaseinstances.

8. To check for batch input jobs,follow the path System →→ Services→→ Batch input →→ Edit.

9. By default, all of the check-boxes inthe Session Status group arechecked. Un-check all of them

except Processing to see if there areany batch input processes stillrunning.

10. Press the Overview button to list thecurrent batch input processes.

11. After clicking Overview, check tosee if the message “No sessionfound” is at the bottom of thescreen. If you find an active batchinput, then you should wait until it

is stopped or contact the personrunning it for more information.

12. Check to see if any ABAP/4programs are running by enteringtransaction /nSM50 .

13. You should only see your ABAP/4program RSMON000 running.Click the Refresh button a few timesto ensure that there are no otherABAP/4 programs running.

14. Enter transaction /nSM04 to ensurethat no users are on the systemexcept for yourself.

15. If no other user are logged on, thenyou can exit the SAP system byentering the transaction /nEND .

• If there are other user(s) loggedonto the system, then usetransaction /nSM02 to send asystem message instructing themto log off of the system.

3. Click the Stop button.

4. Click OK .

5. Wait until all of the traffic lightsturn gray.

Normally, stopping R/3 doesn’t meanthe database is stopped.

6. Follow the path File →→ Exit to closethe SAP Service Manager window.
