Complexity is Hiding in Enterprises… It’s Time to Run Simple

In order to tackle this complexity we had to first find it…So let’s look at where complexity typically lies in organizations today.

Complexity begins with scattered information and data duplication that create different versions of the truth complicating decisions and making it difficult for enterprises to bring good ideas to market quickly and profitably (McKinsey 2014).

A Recent History of Simplification

It’s important to remember that Simplification is not just the latest fad. SAP has been working on the concept of simplifying our customers’ enterprises for several years now.

We launched SAP HANA in 2011 as our next generation platform designed to be the great simplifier for our customers and help them invent or reinvent their business with real-time insight.

+5800 customers have already adopted the platform to do just that with our existing applications optimized to run on SAP HANA:

• This, in turn, helped drive real-time operational reporting and simplified how customers run their SAP Business Warehouse (April 2012) – SAP BW powered by SAP HANA has already exceeded 1600 customers

• Subsequently, we drove real-time business and simplified how customers run their SAP Business Suite by bringing transactions and analytics together into a single in-memory platform (January 2013) – SAP Business Suite powered by SAP HANA has exceeded +1800 customers in only two years

• Next came real-time insight across finance and the simplification of how finance systems are run with SAP Simple Finance powered by SAP HANA by removing aggregates, data redundancies and replication (June 2014)

So let’s consider the “Why” and the “How” of S/4HANATechnologists naturally want to begin with this dialogue with “How” do I move to S/4HANA, but the conversation begins with the business.

The first question that needs to be answered is WHY should I move to S/4HANA? That answer is going to be different for most customers and will depend on what your immediate and long term goals are. A Distinct Approach Based On Your Starting Point

One critical factor as you approach S/4HANA is from where you will begin your journey. Our S/4HANA implementations take this into consideration and are modeled against these various starting points.

Here are four customer scenarios that get you to S/4HANA. It is important to note that for each situation, the customer has full choice of deployment options between cloud, on premise and even hybrid.

Starting Point A: New Customer The journey is defined by a net new implementation of an S/4HANA system with simple adoption - Example: Guided configuration, easy onboarding from the discovery of the solution via cloud trials to the deployment with pre-configured best practices.

SAP remains committed to protect our customers’ investments. We recently announced that we are extending our maintenance commitment until at least 2025. We will continue to deliver innovations without disruption to SAP Business Suite customers on any DB and already on SAP HANA. However, transformational business and IT simplifications require a transformational platform and this is why SAP S/4HANA runs only on SAP HANA. It is the logical next step for our installed base customers and the biggest step forward since +10 years with fully upward compatibility with SAP ERP 6.0.

SAP Business Suite customers can take advantage of S/4HANA in a non-disruptive way.

Starting Point B: SAP Business Suite on any DB Customer Moving to S/4HANA for a typical existing SAP ERP 6.0 customer will require a move to the latest enhancement package, a database migration from any DB to SAP HANA combined with the deployment of the exchange innovation (current code replaced by the new one).

Starting Point C: SAP Business Suite powered by SAP HANA Customer Moving to SAP S/4HANA for an existing SAP Business Suite powered by SAP HANA is even faster as only the deployment of the exchange innovation is required (current code replaced with the new one).

Partners and SAP will provide an easy path for customers to move to SAP S/4HANA with pre-defined migration and deployment packages for quick time to value.

Starting point D: A Complex multi ERP hybrid customer. In this instance, a tiered approach to the S/4HANA migration can be utilized to ensure that with each incremental step, a lasting and integrated environment is created to ensure sustainable simplicity.
