Appliance or TDI approach
Storage must meet HANA KPIs
Appliance or TDI approach
Half-Socket support
Compute, storage and network resources must not get overcommitted
TDI approach required
Network TDI KPIs must be met
VM must be >= 4 sockets
SAP HANA on VMware vSphereDeployment Options
Single-VM Multi-VM Scale-out
• All SAP HANA Scale-Up VMs can get configured as half socket VMs, maximal 2 half socket VMs per NUMA node!• Single host is technically possible, but not recommended!

HANA Non-Prod. Server Policy • vSAN is part of the vSphere ESXi kernel
• Runs on any standardx86 server
• Pools SSDs/HDDs into a shared Datastore
• Delivers enterprise-grade security, scale and performance
• Managed through per-VM storage policies
• Deeply integrated with the VMware stack
• Is able to maintain the SAP HANATDI Storage KPIs
• Gets identified by SAP HANA HCI specific VMware configuration variablesVMworld 2019 Content: Not for publication or distribution

SAP HANA High Level Validation Strategy - Hypervisor
Single Hypervisor version will get validated on 4 socket first Appliance and TDI
• 8 Socket (if applicable)
Single Hypervisor version will get validated on two chipsets
Multiple Hypervisor versions will be supported on a single chipset
Typical validation timelines:• Scale Up: 2– 3 months
• Multi VM: 2 – 3 months
• Scale out: 5 months (projected) utilize partner model

TDI Program Phase 5 for VMware virtualized SAP HANA Systems:
Reduce hardware and operational costs by reusing existing hardware components and operation processes
Mitigate risks and optimize time-to-value by enabling existing IT management processes for SAP HANA implementations
Have more flexibility in hardware vendor selection by leveraging the existing ecosystem
Nearly all VMware virtualized SAP HANA Configurations are TDI installations.
Same server BOM as the certified appliance or supported servers, but mostly with external storage.
As of today, only hypervisor with Workload Based Sizing support.
No T-Shirt sized SAP HANA systems!

What does SAP HANA phase 5 mean for virtualized SAP HANA systems?
Virtual host systems and guest memory and processors are fine-tuned for the specific customer workload. This custom sizing's will optimize the system utilization and CAPEX.
TDI phase 5 for existing VMware TDI implementations?
Customers with Broadwell bases systems and later can analyze their current workload requirements with the help of the latest SAP HANA sizing or system monitoring tools to determine CPU usage and to increase for instance the configured RAM, which was previously limited by the fixed SAP HANA CPU core to RAM ratios!
Relevancy for VMware virtualized SAP HANA Systems
SAP HANA Tailored Data Center Integration (TDI) Phase 5
Lower CAPEX!

Current and Planned SAP HANA on VMware vSphere Support Status
*Scale-Out Non-Prod. support for vSphere 6.0 on Haswell and Broadwell as of note 2315348.
Note: Scale-Out up to 2 TB with 16 nodes, in total 32 TB GA more RAM upon SAP sizing.
SAP HANA Workload Based sizing requires vSphere 6.7u2!
vSphere Version
Maximal RAM1 Maximal CPUs NUMA Nodes / CPU Sockets
vSphere 6.0 4 TB
128 vCPUs 0.5, 1, 2, 3, 4
maximal 16 VMs per 8
socket server
vSphere 6.54 TB Broadwell6 TB SkylakevSphere 6.7
vSphere 6.7u2 6 TB for all platforms2
256 vCPUs
Remarks to SAP HANA support:
1Maximal SAP HANA VM RAM is 6 TB. vRAM is limited by the maximal supported RAM of a physical SAP HANA 4-socket server configuration as specified by SAP (Broadwell 4 TB, SKL 6 TB). Refer to the Certified SAP HANA Hardware Directory for more details. 8-socket servers are supported with maximal 4-socket large VMs.
2If Workload Based Sizing – SAP Note 2779240 gets leveraged, then up to 6 TB memory VM configurations are also possible with Broadwell systems.
