BUILDING NEEDSNearly 15 years ago, aft er building NsQ1 opened, aPC was selected as a partner due to their experti se in system integrati on. at the ti me, saP had nearly 20 discrete systems that were being controlled by an alerton building automati on system (Bas). the systems included HVaC, security, lighti ng, cooling towers and batt eries. saP desired all equipment to be integrated through BaCnet protocol.

aPC integrated each system permitti ng all data to be monitored from one single interface. this allowed for tremendous savings, both in manpower and energy effi ciency.

When saP decided to expand and open building NsQ2, aPC was called in to implement a similar integrati on soluti on. this soluti on incorporated the various data systems in NsQ1 and NsQ2 allowing the Bas to control and monitor everything under one platf orm.

One unique characteristi c of saP is that they have their own underground data center, which spans the enti re length of the offi ce building and hosts the company’s soft ware systems. For this reason, it is imperati ve that the data center’s environment is always working at its opti mal conditi ons.

saP, a German enterprise soft ware company, provides soluti ons to manage business operati ons and customer relati ons. more than 2000 employees sit in saP’s North american Headquarters in Newtown square, Pa. the campus currently consists of two state-of-the-art buildings residing on 100+ acres. the fi rst building opened in 1999 and is known as NsQ1. the second building, NsQ2, opened in 2009, and was awarded Leed Plati num status in 2011.

energy effi ciency and employee comfort are of the utmost importance to saP. Over the years, saP has worked with advanced Power Control (aPC) to initi ate mechanical and Bas system upgrades to ensure their buildings are operati ng at peak effi ciencies.

Case study: saP ameriCa

RESULTS typically data centers are graded on a Pue (power usage effectiveness) scale. On the Pue scale, 1.2 is considered very efficient, 1.5 is considered efficient and 2 is considered average.

thanks to aPC’s work, saP is currently operating with a Pue in the 1.2-1.3 range.

reducing the energy load on saP’s data center has reduced the main load on the chillers in their central plant, which allows saP to operate at an optimal Pue efficiency.

HIGHLIGHTS

Interoperability has allowed SAP to integrate all of their systems into one platform, which has increased energy and resource efficiency.

Data reporting and dashboards allow building and data center managers to review data and receive alerts/remote notifications to proactively make changes to avoid major impacts on the mechanical infrastructure.

Preventative and routine scheduled maintenance keeps all systems operating at optimal performance.

For the second integration, aPC used a tridium overlay system on three separate building automation systems (Leibert, alerton and automated Logic) to integrate everything under one enterprise supervisor.

unlike proprietary systems that often have their own unique protocol, aPC integrated with BaCnet and modbus protocols through the existing equipment utilizing a common tridium front end. this allowed for open operability with no restrictions.

under the new design, the three discrete systems are all controlled by one tridium front end. all KPi’s and alarms can be monitored from any allowable browser-based device.

as part of the overall automation work, aPC integrated various HVaC equipment such as chillers, boilers, and cooling towers. Custom dashboards and analytical software were custom designed for monitoring all critical data points.

saP also signed up for an ongoing service agreement with aPC to ensure their systems would retain optimal efficiency. seasonal preventative maintenance visits are conducted to capture and prevent any major issues from occurring.
