Full System vs Staged Upgrade
Full / One Shot Upgrade
Upgrade all content at once
Only 1 system to maintain
Requires lockdown of the entire system
Issues affect the entire system
Long downtime
Simpler (less options)
Stage / Incremental Upgrade per department
Upgrade content in stages
2 systems to maintain
Requires lockdown of department folder
Issues affect only the department upgraded
Short downtime

Full System Upgrade Considerations
No lockdown or read only options available in BOE
To lockdown a BOE system:
Shutdown your application server
Disable and stop all “BusinessObjects servers” except the “CMS, Input and output”
Block all access to the CMS port except between your source and destination

Its an Upgrade
Moving to SAP BI 4.1 from (at least) “BusinessObjects Enterprise XI Rel.2 SP2” is called Upgrade
Its moving from an old Code line to the latest – 14.1.3.xxxx (SAP BI 4.1 SP3)
Achieved via the “Upgrade Management Tool” - UMT
The UMT is a Windows based GUI Tool
For LINUX and UNIX available as CLI
Comes with the installation of the Server components from SAP BI 4.1
It’s the replacement of the “Import Wizard” from legacy Versions
There is only the UMT!
There are information available like in Forums etc. where people like to move to a new Code line using different techniques
These are “LCM”, “Promotion Management” or a CMS Database Copy
These information are wrong! – There is only the UMT for Upgrading to SAP BI 4.1 from at least “BusinessObjects Enterprise
XI Rel.2 SP2”

From SAP BI 4.0 SPx to SAP BI 4.1
Please read the blog entry by Matthew Shaw:
The update to BI4.1 from BI4.0 is the same process as applying a Support Pack. i.e.
just apply the ‘patch’ software to update from BI4.0 to BI4.1. There is no need to
install BI4.1 on a new machine, nor is there a need to move, or copy content from
one repository to another. Indeed it’s vital that the CMS System Repository
database is updated as part of the update process.

From SAP BI 4.0 SPx to SAP BI 4.1
Misconception: - Full install is needed for new features
Unfortunately the BI4.1 update, BI4.1 SPx Update and BI4.1 Patch update
documentation will have you incorrectly believe this. The following sentences in
those guides are not correct:
If you want to use of the expanded set of ERP Drivers available in this release, you
will need to perform a full install
and
You must do a full installation to get the new features
© 2013 SAP AG or an SAP affiliate company. All rights reserved. 29
From SAP BI 4.0 SPx to SAP BI 4.1
Misconception: - Full install is needed for new features
When the update is applied, only the existing software components are updated. All
new features for those existing components will be updated. Any new components
available will not be installed. To install new components, simply modify the original
base installation and select the new components to install. The patch installer even
provides a friendly reminder to do just this at the end of the update.

From SAP BI 4.0 SPx to SAP BI 4.1 SPx
Its an Update NOT an Upgrade NOR a Migration
Moving to SAP BI 4.1 from SAP BI 4.0 is not a hard Task!
No Big Projects or Budget is required
Simple Process
Moving to SAP BI 4.1 from SAP BI 4.0 is a simple Update installer
Its like Updating from SAP BI 4.0 SP7 to SAP BI 4.0 SP8
Follow the Best Practices
Disable certain Services, Disable Anti- Virus, Maybe kill certain Services (JAVA.EXE) manually
Simple run the Update Installer
Take always the latest Version (As of May 2014 the latest Version is SAP BI 4.1 SP3)
The Best Practices for running an Update installer can be found here

From BOE 6.x / CE 10 (and lower) via SAP BOE XI 3.1 SP7 to SAP BI 4.1
Its an Upgrade
Moving to SAP BI 4.1 from “BusinessObjects Enterprise 6.x”, “Crystal Enterprise 10” or lower is called Upgrade
Its moving from a (very) old Code line to the latest – 14.1.3.xxxx (SAP BI 4.1 SP3)
Only available via the Indirect Migration Path
No direct Migration Path is available
You need a version in between that offers a direct Migration Path
Should be at least “BusinessObjects Enterprise XI Rel.2 SP2”
SAP recommends to use “SAP BusinessObjects Enterprise XI 3.1 SP7” as the Version in Between
This Version is still in Support and offers better Upgrade compatibility to SAP BI 4.1
A mixture of Tools
For moving from the legacy Environment to “SAP BusinessObjects Enterprise XI 3.1 SP7” take advantage of the “Import
Wizard” – And nothing else!
Afterwards use the UMT followed by the Best Practices to Upgrade to SAP BI 4.1
From BOE 6.x / CE 10 (and lower) via SAP BOE XI 3.1 SP7 to SAP BI 4.1

From BOE 6.x / CE 10 (and lower) via SAP BOE XI 3.1 SP7 to SAP BI 4.1
Best Practices Have a separate Environment for the SAP

Use the “Import Wizard” from this

Upgrade the content 1:1 – Do NOT
edit/adjust the content in the SAP BOE XI

No Wave Upgrade – Only Full Upgrade
Adjustment/Edit will be done in the SAP BI
4.1 Destination Environment
From the SAP BOE XI 3.1 SP7 Environment

follow the BP for the UMT
