Traveling to SantoriniSantorini is perhaps the most beautiful of all the islands of the Greek island world. At the same time it is a destination with a wide range of pleasures, tavernas, shopping and exciting excursions. Santorini is quite a classic.

It feels like you fly as you look out over the ocean from the capital of Thira’s cafe terraces. The white city lies on the edge of a giant 3500-year-old, volcanic crater whose bottom is well below the surface of the ocean. It is actually the crater ’s steep inside that plunges down to the sea and the harbor below you.

In the stairway streets you will find whitewashed houses with blue doors, small cafes there but playing backgammon, black-clad old wives who eat herbs in old olive oil cans, cats sleeping on rattan chairs and white chapel with blue domes. In other words, exactly what we associate with Greek small town pile.

Also, do not miss the village of Oía, which together with Thira belongs to the island’s most beautiful places. Day excursions often end, as the sunset in Oia is well known. When the sun is low over the ocean to the west, its brick-red leather shines up the entire inside of the volcano. The excellent restaurants are a good reason for visiting Oía, as are the art galleries and the little beach where volcanic pumice floats inland.

In Kamari and on the entire east coast there are kilometers long black lava beaches with pebbles. The northern part of Kamaris beach forms the seabed of remains after volcanic eruptions that have been formed by the waves. The beaches are not shallow. On the south coast, it is nice, more bath-friendly with black sandy bottom, these lie b. a. in Perissa and Perivolos.

Spectacular SantoriniThere is a gasp through the crowd that has gathered in the western end of the village of Oia. We are completely north on the main island of Santorini archipelago, and a veil of clouds in front of the sun shelves the village in a magic, pink shear.

Every night visitors gather here in the stairs and alleys that lead down to the sea, to catch the day’s latest rays before the sun disappears behind the horizon. It all seems like a former religious ritual.

As in signal, suddenly pink light fountains shine like huge prisoners out of the swarming sunbathing, and when the old sailboat sails in from the south, it all seems like a sweety final in a giant stage setting. The only thing missing is the music, even though the crowd’s gisping turns out to be an appropriate soundtrack.
