- In 1952, published his greatest work ‘The Old Man and the Sea’. He was awarded Pulitzer Prize in 1953.
- In 1961, he committed suicide by shooting himself. This was the last published work of Hemingway. After writing this novella, Hemingway has proved his victory.
- He immortalises himself by this novella. He also got many experiences in his journey of life.
- Story of an old man’s struggle.
- Santiago is the winner as he wins over solitude, shame and despair.
-“A man can be destroyed and not defeated”.
- Death is the unavoidable force in the novella, kind of open ended.
- The background in The Old Man and the Sea is derived from real-life Cuban fishing villages near the Gulf of Stream.
- The subject of the unlucky man who caught a giant fish also came from personal experience.
- Santiago serves as a metaphor for the creative artist, someone like Hemingway himself. Hemingway’s loneliness is apparent in Santiago’s characterization and external conflict.
- Santiago- once a great fisherman
- Critics say that this novella is a comparison as Hemingway, an old man is fighting to retain an active lifestyle and Santiago, an old man fighting to master the fish and maintain his reputation.
- Representation of Santiago
“It is good to have an end to journey toward : But it is the journey that matters in the end”.
