Meeting of June 3rd:President Russ readto us a couple ofthankyous recently received. The Randersfolks
from Denmark sent a nice letter expressingtheir gratitudefor our club's hosting of
their students. The students very much enjoyedtheir hostfamilies, the welcome partyin their honor, andtheday trips plannedforthem. SusanLowry ofThe Living Room wasmost appreciative oftheefforts offive ofour
clubmembers who helpedputina garden.John Watson organized thiswork party.Thankyou, Ralph Harryman, Del Raby,
Phil Sitzman, and the 5th person/or>wwefforts in making The
LivingRoom a brighter, more cheerfulplacefor homeless women and their chil
dren. Scott Holder's andhis wife, Tricia, willbe celebrating her birthday June 7th—probablyenjoying a special dinner outthatnight. President Russ presentedScottwith acard to give to Tricia. Dave Lorenzen will
be celebrating his birthdayJune 10th with a20 hourplaneflight toSingapore on his
way to the International Rotary Conference. This trip will include visits to Thailandand
Malaysia. Dave's wife and soon-to-beSunrise Rotary President, Shauna Lorenzen, said she's giving herhusband thiswonderful trip to theEastfor his birthday. DelRaby is going to Chico this weekend to attendhis highschool class' 55thyear re
union. A 55th high school class reunion!Thishas got to befirst in this club. Del is
mostexcitedaboutthisas an opportunity tocatch upon what's happened in thelives ofhis classmates. He'sjusthoping that it's not
"abunch ofoldpeople"attending. Theyshould all be asyoung at heart asyou, Del.President Russ has learned that Ross Jones
is onyet another important board—theNorth Bay World TradeAssociation. Russ'
question is, "When doyou find time to be anattorney? "Ross responded bysaying thathisporters are wondering thesamething.
Randy Seclyc is oneprouddad. Apparentlydaughter, Ellie, is an outstandingsecond
yearfrench student and on her trackteamhas placed 5th inthe highjumpat the
league conference. Randy put S50 towardher Paul Harris. Thanks, Randy. Presi
dentRuss asked Frank Cerconc to refrainfrom blurting outtheanswer as heposed
this question to Dan Lambert,, "What teeth
are the last to appear in the mouth? "Dc.was sure it must be the wisdom teeth, buthe was wrong. It's thefalse teeth. Ezbon
Jen gotcreditfor knowing that honey bees-are arthropods (members ofa large phylum of invertebrate animals withjointed
legs anda segmented bodies). Crustaceans, arachinids, myriapods, andtrilo-bites arealso arthropods. Steve Amendgot creditfor knowing that insects are, in
fact, animals. Given that our President hasa degree in zoology, we should consider
ourselves lucky that most ofthis year's popquizzes havebeen primarilyfocussedon
fish, orat least theact offishing. Fishingforfines, Presidenl Russ, winner ofFetzerBed& Breakfast overnightfined Jo Gen-nuso, who worksfor Fetzer, $10for his
winning this prize. Ezbon Jen hada highfive as he is about to embark withfourstu
dents to Ensenada on a mission topilotavaccine thatwouldhelpprevent rotavirus.
Rotavirus, which sounds like a Rotarynamesake sadly, apparently under themicroscope even lookslikethe Rotary wheel.
The disturbingfact isthat rotavirus kills^^870,000 children eachyear. This can beprevented with theadministration ofanoral vaccine. We're anxious to see how
this trial goes in Ensenada. For his highfive, Art King was nearly busting attheseams he wasso happyfor Gary Baylcss'
son, Michael. Apparently Michaelwasgranted a Provost Scholarship. Gary Bay-less wasjust as proud ofhis son and contributed S50 to his wife, Lynda's Paul
Harris. Thanks, Gary. On the subject ofgraduation, Phil Sitzman is delighted that
his daughter graduatedfrom SonomaState, delighted that Deborah Corriganwas abletoplace herin a temporaryjob,
and delightedthat Dan Fee is hernewboss. Warren Smith highfivedfor his
wife, Wendy being given tenure and sonbeing granted a scholarship. Congratual-
tions to all the graduates!

This Week's Program
June 24 - Club AssemblyPlan to be at this Thursday's meeting.
Under the capable leadership of our President, RussLockner, 1998-1999 was an active and productive
year for Sunrise Rotary. This assembly is an opportunity to assess the club's accomplishments of this year,
as well as to take a look at what's in store for us in
the year ahead. Incoming President Shauna Lorenzenwill outline plans developed with her Board for the
1998-1999 year. This is a great opportunity, particularly for new members, to gain an understanding of
the full range of community and international activi
ties in which our club participates.

* To Our Guatemala *
Meeting of June 17Jim McCracken shared with us a heartfeltinspirational thought aboutourclub President, Russ Lockner. Russ'partner, Susan
Juvinall, was involved in bad accident whiledog sledding last year. She suffered sub
stantial injur}' to her leg andfoot requiringsurgeries and ongoing physical therapy.
Susan has been wheelchair bound since the
accident untilrecently whenshe's been ableto get up and move about on crutches. Caringfor Susan has been a long and ongoingordeal. Even withthe support offamily andfriends, Russ and Susan have beenfacing agreat challenge.. Russ, your dedication in
caringfor Susan, and, at thesame time, fulfillingyour committment to serve as our
Sunrise President, has inspired us all. Jimaptlyput into words what we'veall beenthinking andfeeling. Thank you, Russfor
demonstrating whatservice about selfreallymeans.
Rusty readyto us a letterfrom NathanielBartley thanking ourclubfor a SI25 scholarship thathe was awarded. Now SI25 maynot seem like a lot ofmoney, but this made a
differencefor Nathaniel. He was most appreciative ofbeing able mpurchase the artsupplies he needs to do his projects. Russ
also read a thankyou letterfrom the FISHorganization. FISH operates afood cupboard thatprovides a crucial service to
Sonoma Countyfamilies in need. Our clubdonated S2000 to helpfill what had appar
ently become an emptycupboard.Hugh Helm's wife, Christine Engel, had abirthday today. In recognition ofthis spe
cial ocasion, Hugh said she's gotten a ticketto Ohio to visitfamily and a brandnew bi
cyclefrom Russ McCracken'sstore, RinconCyclery. Randy Seelye's birthday is on Fathers Day thisyear. According to Randy, hisbirthdayfalls on dad's day every 12years—
about as often as RalphHarryman's birthdayfalls on ColumbusDay. Since Ralph and I share a birthday,
I'mfairly certain ofthisfact. Randy look alittle trip to visit that American culture capital knowas Las Vegas. This cost him a nom

This Week's Program
July 1st - Club AssemblyPlan to be at this Thursday's meeting.
Our new President, Shauna Lorenzen, will outline
plans developed with her Board for the 1999-2000year. This is a great opportunity, particularly for newmembers, to gain an understanding of the full rangeof community and international activities in whichour club participates. It's also an opportunity for
each of us to survey activities that we might beinter-ested in participating in as volunteers. We all bring
different talents to our Rotary Club which is an assetto our organization. Please look for activities that you
think you would enjoying being a part of.
Debunking Russ LocknerLast Friday evening clubmembers and spouses got together atthe Kenwood Depot to celebrate our outgoing President, Russ. What a terrific event this was! We all enjoyed the wonderfullyfunky location, the Country Western theme, and the good foodand fellowship. Carol Catienzoli donated the use of her bassboat so that Russ could arrive in style. To our delight, Russ'
partner, Susan Juvinall was able to attend and enjoy thefestivities sans wheelchair. You look stunning on crutches,
Susan. Emily Ross stopped in to teach Russ some dance moves.Dale Zumfelde, who was provided with some special photos of
Rusty by Vicky Lockner and SusanJuvinall, put on a slide show that really rSl'€£nr&,
tickled our funny bones. Thanks toArt King for organizing this event andmaking it a fun salute to our outgoingcommander and chief. And thank you,
Russ, for a great Rotary year.

Ed Carrctte shared with us an inspirationalthought. That is. one needlook nofurther thanourclub to beinspired. Edtoldusof theeye
glass mission toGuatemala andhow he andhis13fellow Rotarians and Rotarians-at-heart
worked II hourdaysexamining the eyes of1200Guatemalans. It truly is inspirational to realizetheplanning, organization, and effortthat isinvolvedingiving thegift ofunblurredvision. Each member ofthisworkparty shareda bit oftheir Guatemala experience. John Jones saidthey examined 367folks ontheirfirst dayand
dispensed 700pairs ofglassesduring thecourseof their work week 80 of those examined were
determined tosufferfrom cataracts which essentiallymeans that they willeventually lose theirsight entirely unlesstheyundergo surgeryto
have the cataracts removed. Fortunately, thanksto Ed Carrette 's contacts in Guatemala, these
people will be able to havethissight-savingoperation. ForSteve Amend, going to Guatemalawas an opportunity toexperience the culture of
this region andsee the ancient cityofTikalwhich hehadonly readabout as a student ofanthropology incollege. But what didhe likebest? "The hugs, "said Steve. Vicky Lockner
becameknown as the "Queen Fitter" because ofthe greatskillshedemonstrated inproperlyfittingfolksfor their eyeglasses. Vicky, wholovesto wear brightlycolored clothes, wore a gor
geous andbrillanily colored outfit that shepurchased in Guatemala. Dan Lambert was over
whelmed bythe beauty oftheplace, thestunninglake viewsand ancient Mayan ruinsofTikal.
Dan shared with us beinghumbled bya 78yearold man, who, havingno legs, is wheelchair-
bound. In addition to this substantial disability.the gentleman has only one eye. "How much
could this person benefitfrom apair of |glasses? " thought Dan. Well, plenty, appaently. The glasses thisfellow receivedmake umeaningful difference in the qualityofhis life.
Keith Taylor and Bob "Robcrto"Scott workedin inventory dispensingthe eyeglasses. Bob's
wife, Kathy helped byfitting people with theireyeglasses. Keith, like Vicky and the others, was attired in a wonderfully bright woven
jacket that he acquired during the trip. Keithadmitted that, since he's retired, he is not used
to getting up early and working long days. Justgetting to Rotary on Thursday mornings wasa
challenge. "That's easy after Guatemala,"saysKeith. Carmen, Keith'swife, was also alongfor this adventure. Carmen had one ofthe
toughestjobs as she and Les Shipley had toworkin veryclose quarters in thedarkened
(and very hot) examination room. Mary Farha, who claimsshe "failedthefitting department, "workedpreparing thepatients for their examinations bydispensingeyedrops and also ex
plained to thosepeople withgood vision thatthey didn't need glasses. Shejoked about howeasy it was to "getinto Dan Lambert's pants."You see, Maiy 's luggage was lost on the wayto
Guatemala. Apparentlyshe came to Danbeggin'for britchesto wear. Being the
gentleman that Dan is, he naturally obliged.
The club received a S1S42 checkfiom Bient !!'.ofGrohe Floristfor ourparticipation in deliven..a
flowers over Mothers Weekend. Thank you to all whohelped with this event. Themoney will go to SOS.
Congratulations. Sylvia & Randy Iliggins/oryour15 wonderfulyears ofmarriage. Warren & Wendy
Smith are celebrating 24 years of marriage wilhdinner out at La Care. Thank you, Warren, for
completing Wendy's Paul Harris. Congratulations.Wendy on becoming afull professor al SSU. Ross
.Jones' wife, .lane Paul will probably be enjoying "aromantic dinner for four" for her upcoming birthday.Jeff Young, clubjock, participated in the Vineman
Triatholon, sponsoredbyRuss McCrackcn's RinconCycleryand coached by John Dolinsck (which
means Jeffhad no choice but Io succeed). ShaunaLorenzen has a newjob as Finance Manager of
Advanced Business Products. She starts her new jobJuly 12. Now.she could make herposition aspresidentofour club afull limejob. butthepay isn7so
good. Thank you, Shauna, for your S100 contribution to Cole's Paul Harris. Dan & Susan Davis
celebrated their 26lh anniversary by dining at one ofthe 3 Basque restaurants in SF. Mike Kelly and his
wife, Lou aim, enjoyedafabulous vacationinFranceS100for Lou ann 's Paul Harris. Kathy
