gather valuable information for yourself, and also perhaps for family members,
friends, or neighbors who might be in need of this information either now or in
the future.
Sondra Everhart is the State Long-Term Care Ombudsman, New Mexico Aging &
Long-Term Services Department and she will be sharing information on the
following topic:
“Aging Gracefully and Safely”
You’ll see more in her introductory information, but here is a small sample of
how Sondra describes her work:
“This position affords the opportunity to work with wonderful colleagues and to
continue my passion for designing public health service programs and be an
advocate on behalf of New Mexico’s aging and adult disabled populations.”
We look forward to seeing you here Thursday morning.
Sondra Everhart, State Long Term Care Ombudsman
I am a graduate from the University of Maine and spent my early career as a teacher, public health
program manager, and clinical research and education laboratory administrator. Following public school
teaching, I was a public educator for the March of Dimes until joining the State of Maine, Department of
Health and Human Services as Director of the Maine Genetic Disease Program. These opportunities
allowed me to gain experience writing and managing state, federal, and private agency service grants
and drafting state and federal legislation focused on maternal and child health and services to
individuals with genetic diseases. I then moved to the private sector and the world of not-for–profit
research and education as Vice President for Administration for the Foundation for Blood Research. The
Foundation is recognized internationally as expert in the fields of connective tissue disorders and
prenatal diagnosis. I moved to New Mexico 18 years ago as owner of two for profit service businesses. In
2004, it was time to return to government employment as a CMS certified long term care complaint
investigator and triage supervisor for the New Mexico Department of Health. Since 2006, I have had the
honor of being the New Mexico State Long Term Care Ombudsman at the Aging and Long Term Services
Department. This position affords the opportunity to work with wonderful colleagues and to continue
my passion for designing public health service programs and be an advocate on behalf of New Mexico’s
aging and adult disabled populations.

Governor Susana Martinez, Aging and Long-Term Services Department Recognizing New Mexico Seniors
May is Older Americans Month
(Santa Fe) — Governor Susana Martinez and New Mexico’s Aging and Long-Term Services Department are recognizing May as Older Americans Month. The theme for this year’s Older Americans Month, Get into the Act, aims to promote healthy aging and increase community involvement for older adults.
“It’s time to begin a fresh conversation about what it means to age in New Mexico,” said Aging
and Long-Term Services Cabinet Secretary Gino Rinaldi. “Now, more than ever, it’s imperative
that elders live healthy, productive lives, for their benefit and for the community at large.”
Giving older adults the tools to remain active, contributing members of the community is a strategic priority of the Aging and Long-Term Services Department. Opportunities provided by the Department include senior employment, volunteering, exercise and learning. “We strive to keep people as healthy as possible for as long as possible,” Rinaldi said. “Our volunteer and senior employment programs serve the dual purpose of contributing to the community, and giving elders a meaningful reason to keep moving. Exercise programs, such as Senior Olympics and EnhanceFitness, and learning opportunities offered at your local senior centers and at the annual Conference on Aging, are targeted to keep seniors mentally and physically active.” Each year, the Aging and Long-Term Services Department and New Mexico’s Aging Network, provide support to more than 100,000 elders in various forms, including senior transportation, meals for seniors and caregiving. “We need to begin a new conversation about aging in our state,” said Secretary Rinaldi. “For Older Americans Month, I hope people take a moment to think about what they want life to be like as they age, and to thank an elder for the contributions they’ve made to their community.” Governor Martinez has proclaimed May Older Americans Month. You can see the proclamation by clicking here.
