The implication is that the nurse functions independently and therefore can only be licensed by the Oklahoma Board of Nursing as a registered professional nurse. In addition, the PC(USA) requires that the nurse has both a pro- fessional nursing license as well as malpractice/liability insurance. This practice reclaims the Biblical understanding of the dynamic integration of body, spirit, mind, emotions, and social situations. The call is to walk with people through the transitions of life, help people grow spiritually and find a language of hope in the midst of these transitions. As a result, the parameters are very clear for both the nurse as well as the congregation. How does the nurse accomplish the task of walking with the congregation through these transitions? This is accomplished through health education, personal health counseling, advocacy, referral to a variety of resources, facilitation of pastoral care and comfort, and facilitator of support groups. The PC(USA) church does not permit invasive procedures. The nurse does not supplant home health care services but can educate the family about the needs of their loved one. So what does the parish nurse do for her practice in the SWOPP? Each week the parish nurse provides a “parish nurse corner” which is published in the worship bulletin. It is a succinct paragraph discussing a health subject that may be in the news. Since February is Heart Month, the subject matter is focused there. In April the subject could be preparation for difficult weather. In May 2017, the nurse is writing about Stroke and Hypertension. In September it will be about getting flu and pneumonia shots. In October it will be about breast cancer. Each month the nurse visits the Nutrition Site in Grandfield. There she does blood pressure screening and monitors medication administration. Churches in Temple and Walters are visited. Information for that month is posted and she is available for individual consultations as requested. On the 5th Sunday, the nurse worships with the congregants, shares in their communion followed by a potluck lunch, and provides some educational activity appropriate for that time. They have fun while they learn. So how are our funds used by the SWOPP? The nurse does not receive any pay for the service she provides. The Parish reimburses her for mileage, tolls, and malpractice insurance premiums. She is not paid for continuing education, only mileage. Our coffee money is serving the Parish well and is very much appreciated! If you have any questions for our Parish Nurse, please contact the church office. Our coffee and donut money goes to Southwestern Oklahoma Presbyterian (SWOPP) Parish Nurse Program which has been in existence

since the summer of 2005. as an extension of the Parish Nurse Program at First Presbyterian Church, Duncan OK.

Parish Nursing is a program which focuses on health promotion and disease prevention. PC(USA) has been a leader in brining the pro-

gram to its congregations. The 20th General Assembly created the “Life Abundant” policy which called upon churches to encourage and

promote health and wholeness. The National Health Ministries of PC(USA) provided excellent documents for establishing programs, and

while the office has since closed, parish nurses continue to function in many congregations.

In Oklahoma, the organization is called Faith Community Nurses of Oklahoma. The American Nurses’ Association has published “Faith

Community Nursing: Scope and Standards of Practice” which states “Faith community nursing is the specialized practice of professional

nursing that focuses on the intentional care of the spirit as part of the process of promoting wholistic health and preventing or minimiz-

ing illness in a faith community.”

The nurse is a licensed professional nurse. The implication is that the nurse functions independently and therefore can only be licensed

by the Oklahoma Board of Nursing as a registered professional nurse. In addition, the PC(USA) requires that the nurse has both a pro-

fessional nursing license as well as malpractice/liability insurance.

This practice reclaims the Biblical understanding of the dynamic integration of body, spirit, mind, emotions, and social situations. The

call is to walk with people through the transitions of life, help people grow spiritually and find a language of hope in the midst of these

transitions. As a result, the parameters are very clear for both the nurse as well as the congregation.

How does the nurse accomplish the task of walking with the congregation through these transitions? This is accomplished through health

education, personal health counseling, advocacy, referral to a variety of resources, facilitation of pastoral care and comfort, and facilitator

of support groups. The PC(USA) church does not permit invasive procedures. The nurse does not supplant home health care services but

can educate the family about the needs of their loved one.

So what does the parish nurse do for her practice in the SWOPP? Each week the parish

nurse provides a “parish nurse corner” which is published in the worship bulletin. It is a

succinct paragraph discussing a health subject that may be in the news. Since February is

Heart Month, the subject matter is focused there. In April the subject could be preparation

for difficult weather. In May 2017, the nurse is writing about Stroke and Hypertension. In

September it will be about getting flu and pneumonia shots. In October it will be about

breast cancer.

Each month the nurse visits the Nutrition Site in Grandfield. There she does blood pressure

screening and monitors medication administration. Churches in Temple and Walters are

visited. Information for that month is posted and she is available for individual consultations

as requested. On the 5th Sunday, the nurse worships with the congregants, shares in their

communion followed by a potluck lunch, and provides some educational activity appropriate

for that time. They have fun while they learn.

So how are our funds used by the SWOPP? The nurse does not receive any pay for the service

she provides. The Parish reimburses her for mileage, tolls, and malpractice insurance

premiums. She is not paid for continuing education, only mileage. Our coffee money is

serving the Parish well and is very much appreciated!

If you have any questions for our Parish Nurse, please contact the church office.

Congratulations, Jakob McMahan and Tanner Champlin! We are so proud of your accomplish-

ments and look forward to hearing about the great things that you will do. There is an excite-

ment and a question hanging in the air for your future: What are you going to do with your

time, talent and energies? That may seem a bit daunting, but you both have something going

for you.

In Philippians, Paul is writing to a group of people who he loves, whose future is before them

and they have obstacles to overcome. He writes in 1:3 “I thank my God every time I re-

member you. 4 In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy 5 because

of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now, 6 being confident

of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to comple-

tion until the day of Christ Jesus.”

Paul is announcing something special here! God had started something that is brought to com-

pletion and God calls it good! Can you think of anywhere else that God starts something and

completes it and calls it good? That’s right - creation. It’s as if Paul is telling the people who he

loves, whose futures are uncertain, that their story has its roots in creation. Up until this point,

nothing but God himself is good and nothing outside of God is good. Paul announces the good

news that God is doing something that points to the restoration of things. The work God has

started inside of you is good and God is using you to carry around this goodness in this world

that God loves.

Jakob is headed to Rose State College and Tanner is serving our country as a marine. Yes, you

made your plans and set a direction but there is comfort in knowing you have had a direction all

along! When you say yes to Christ, the same power that said, “let there be light”, the same

breath that unleashed life into the first humans is now released in you and its GOOD!

God is doing something in each one of us and it is good! We wait in great anticipation to see

the good things that the two of you will accomplish because God is doing something good in you!

Grace and Peace

Beyond the Pulpit

Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ, greetings to you all in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. Sandwiched between Memorial Day and the 4th of July, the two civil holidays when we celebrate our freedom as a nation and honor those who have provided it for us, is June. Of course, as a child, June meant freedom to me. With June came freedom from school, lots of outdoor time, picnics, swimming, summer camp, vacation, and no shoes (except for church on Sunday). In my mind, it would be a long time until the oppression of school began again. Those were great times, and they still are. Of course as we grow up, freedom takes on different meanings.

Galatians 5:1 reads, “For freedom Christ has set us free. Stand firm, therefore, and do not submit again to

a yoke of slavery.” Many preachers over the years have turned to this passage in an effort to inspire the congregation to remember the virtues of liberty and freedom that come with our salvation in Christ as well as with our American heritage. We must work as hard at preserving the freedoms of our nation as we do in celebrating our freedom found in the Christian life. There is nothing wrong with these ideals, indeed I would pretty much agree with their ideals. Living the Christian life is difficult and involves a great deal of hard work in praying, studying, worshipping and resisting temptation. Like-wise the freedoms we enjoy as citizens of this nation have been won and pre-served at a precious price. However it is interesting that later in Galatians 5, Paul writes, “For you were called to freedom, brothers

and sisters;* only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for self-indulgence, but through love become

slaves to one another. For the whole law is summed up in a single commandment, ‘You shall love your

neighbor as yourself.’ (Galatians 5: 13-14)

What an ironic thing to tell us, “do not submit to slavery”… and then in the same chapter he goes on to encourage the faithful to become slaves to each other. Of course we need to put it all into context. Paul is of course speaking about the Jewish laws that pre-scribed that certain actions were necessary to attain salvation. For the Christian, faith in Jesus supersedes the Law. But that freedom is not a license to do whatever you want. On the contrary, as people freed from sin and death by the death and resurrection of Jesus, we now have an obligation to love one-another as we have been loved by Jesus. Out of that love we are called to serve one-another. To give our lives as Jesus did in service to God and the community. Ironically, that brings us back to the nation. For what really makes us strong is the willingness to share and to serve. On average, Americans give more donations and volunteer time than any other nation. We are protected by a volunteer armed force, and the bulk of our fire-fighting is done by volunteers. When there is a disaster, it is the volunteers that do most of the clean-up and rebuilding. What drives us? There are many reasons, only you can decide what inspires you to service. As we enter into the freedom and excitement of summertime, remember the call to serve others. Remem-ber that it is Christ Jesus that calls us to love and serve every day. Take some time to do something for someone else, be a good example to your kids and your neighbors. Serve with gladness and strive to love each other as we love our nation. Besides, serving each other is not really an option, as one of my es-teemed colleagues said, It’s “Biblical, it may not be about what you want.” May the peace and blessings of God, the joy of Jesus Christ, and the guidance of the Holy Spirit be with you all, Mitchell Lee Miller.

A Note From Tim

“O come, let us sing to the Lord; let us make a joyful noise to the Rock of our salvation! Let us come into His presence with thanksgiving; let us make a joyful noise to Him with songs of praise! For the Lord is a great God, and a great king above all gods.

O come, let us worship and bow down, let us kneel before the Lord, our Maker! For He is our God, and we are the people of His pasture, and the sheep of His hand.” – Psalm 95:1-3, 6-7
