Santa Claus is coming to Town….
Brookhurst School Association Christmas Fair is taking place
on December the 7th from 2pm to 4pm.
There are lots of things planned including a Raffle, Santa’s
grotto, Tombola, Face painting and Stalls.
We are looking for donations. Please bring any second hand
books & toys, bottles of wine or unwanted gifts from last
year to the office from the 2nd of December.
The Cake stall is always popular so please ‘bake and donate’.
Cakes can be left on workbenches in the year 5 Corridor on
Thursday the 5th and Friday the 6th of December.
Can you help on the day? We need as much help as we can
get to run the stalls. We plan to make the day as fun as
possible for our volunteers and we can’t run this event
without your help. Please contact Ross
([email protected]) if you can spare some time to
support this event.

Parent Communication
A very big thank you to all of the parents who have contacted either the school office or Mr Hughes with re-
gards Birthday sweets.
We are collating an article for our newsletter covering the main points raised in your responses and these will
be fully discussed at our next parents forum meeting on Monday 20th January. Please note that we will have 2
parent forum meeting on the 20th January—at 9:00am and 7:30. This will allow parents who can not attend the
meeting in the evening due to child care issues to have the opportunity to attend.
In the meantime, please note that the giving of sweets is a decision to be made by the parents of the birthday
child but we do ask that parents are mindful that not all parents are happy with this practice.
Alternative suggestions put forward have include the giving of Birthday stickers, pencils or badges.
Many thanks
Friday 29th November
As we head towards the end of our first term at Brookhurst, we would like to share just some of our fantas-
tic learning.
Our daily ‘Write Dance’ sessions have really helped us to develop
our pencil control and practice all the movements we need to
form our letters correctly.
We are having great fun at our ‘Junk Modelling’ station.
This really helps us to use our imagination, correctly handle and use
tools with increasing control, select appropriate resources and join
different materials together in a
variety of ways.
Friday 29th November
Our Daily Challenge keeps us busy each day. We
work independently on all sorts of activities.
We might contribute a drawing to this week’s ‘
Sounds of the Week’ board, write about a
nocturnal or diurnal animal, create a picture using
the 2d shapes and the light box, or add the
correct number of apples to the tree.
There’s something different to do each day, and
we receive a certificate on a Friday if we have
completed a challenge.
We love being outside. Our new equipment encourages us to
experiment we different ways of moving and jump off and land
appropriately. Now we have the confidence and skill to travel
under, over, around and through our equipment
We have had a great start to school life. All our teachers are very proud of us and
all that we have achieved this term.

Curriculum Information—Mathematics
Dear Parents,
Thank you to those people who rightly pointed out that 6x4 does not equal 20 (as I put in the
newsletter last week).
I am glad you all noticed my deliberate mistake!!!!
It does give me the opportunity to let you all know that at Brookhurst we value the mistakes
that the children make. Through identification we can focus them on improving their work and
ensuring they don’t make them again. So in true Brookhurst spirit I promise not to get 6 x 4
wrong again!
Now that I have your attention I thought I would take this opportunity to thank those parents
that have already responded regarding the maths workshops. They will go ahead after
Christmas (I promise the calculations will be correct!).
As we seem to be wearing our maths hats, I thought I would pose the following for people to work on at
home:
Take three different colour blocks, maybe red, yellow and blue.
Make a tower using one of each colour.
Here's one with red on top, blue in the middle and yellow on the bottom.
Now make another tower with a different colour on top.
How many different towers can you make?
What if there were 4 blocks? Could you work out a way of predicting for any number of blocks?
Menu Change
We have been advised by County Caterers that there will be a permanent
change to the Hot Lunch menu :

Year 5 Table Tennis Champions
Brookhurst are proud to share our Year 5 Table Tennis stars -
Jai Sispal, Caitlin Harper, Grace Phakathi and Andrew Hayden. They took part in a table tennis competi-
tion held at St. Pauls Primary. Caitlin took 1st place for the girls, Andrew 1st place for the boys and Jai
2nd place for the boys. Although Grace didn't enter the final, she played marvellously and her effort and
determination were noted by Mrs Belcher. Well done!!!
Mrs Archer, PE co-ordinator
Congratulations to Tayla Whyte in Year 5
Tayla’s mum has sent in a picture of Tayla competing at
her first major Irish Dancing competition.
She came 69th out of 100 in her first competition against
people from all over the world.
Well done Tayla.

Curriculum Information—Religious Education
At present Brookhurst School follows the Warwickshire Agreed Syllabus for teaching RE. This will not change
under the new curriculum. There are specific themes for each unit of work covering two of the major religions
in that theme.
The syllabus is under review now by SACRE but as a Warwickshire school we shall always use that syllabus.
Each year group follows six units a year, one each half term, appropriate to the age of the children. RE should
start with the children and their experiences, then move to considering the beliefs and views of others.
New artefacts have been purchased for the children to use in their lessons with the results that the children have
demonstrated a high level of interest and been able to take their learning further. The children were able to
develop the skills of enquiry, analysis, interpretation, evaluation and reflection by observing and discussing the
artefacts.
As a school we subscribe to the termly magazine RE Today, which has proved to be a useful resource; there is a
news element and a resource booklet which gives ideas for different age groups on a specific topic eg God.
