Our Lord’s explicit desire is that this feast be cel- ebrated on the first Sunday after Easter. This spe- cific Sunday is designated in “The Liturgy of the Hours and the Celebration of the Eucharist” as the “Octave Day of Easter.” It was officially called the Second Sunday of Easter after the liturgical reform of Vatican II. Now, by the Decree of the Congrega- tion for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments, the name has been changed to the “Second Sunday of Easter” or “Divine Mercy Sun- day.” Why is this significant? Pope John Paul II declared: “It is im- portant that we accept the whole message that comes to us from the word of God on this Second Sunday of Easter, which will be called “Divine Mercy Sunday.” According to Pope John Paul II, “the whole message” refers to the connection between “the Easter Mystery of the Redemption-in other words, the suffering, death, burial, resurrection, and ascension of Christ, followed by the sending of the Holy Spirit-and this feast of Divine Mercy, the Octave Day of Easter,” (The Divine Mercy Message and Devotion, pgs. 48-49). Pope John Paul II made Divine Mercy Sunday as the ending of the Easter celebration. Divine Mercy Sunday is an integral part of our Paschal celebration! This marks the last day of our great celebration of Easter! On this day God opens up the heavens with a showering of His Mercy! Sources: Diary, Divine Mercy in my Soul, St. Maria Faustina Kowalska. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

W hen we imagine the disciples cowering behind locked doors on the first Easter, it is a matter of the greatest urgency that the

doors get opened. They are not locked in as if in prison; rather, they have chosen to marinate in fear. Both the lock and the key stand on their side of the door, in their control. Page 2: SANTA CLARAsantaclarachurch.weebly.com/uploads/9/1/1/3/911303/scp...2015/04/12  · first reading today. What do we pray for in our tradition? More than anything else, we pray for

an earnest prayer for peace with God, with self, with neighbor, and for peace in the world. Yet, curiously, the peace Christ offers is deeper than the mere ab-sence of conflict. Our tradition treasures the memories of saints who were remarkably open to Christ’s gift of peace even in the maelstroms of history. St. Edith Stein and St. Maximillian Kolbe, martyrs of the Holo-caust, are but two examples. At the eye of a fearful storm, they stand as witnesses to the power of Christ’s rising in our lives. Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

OF ONE HEART AND MIND

R eading about the faith of the early Christian believers can be a re-

al inspiration to those of us who have been Christians for a long time, as well as for those who are newly baptized. Can you imagine people of this world being “of one heart and mind” as was the first community of believers? Today’s First Letter of John seems to hold the key to how this can be accomplished. Keeping God’s commandments and loving all of God’s chil-dren seems to be the start of being “of one heart and mind.” We live in a world that stresses differences—differences among religions, among races, between genders, and among economic classes. Today we are summoned to focus on what we all share in common on this fragile planet of ours. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
