Sango Ceramics is one of Indonesia most dynamic local tableware companies, which has been active for almost 40 years and is located in Semarang, on the northern coast of Central Java. It is a family-owned company which was founded in 1977 by Mr. Sapto Hidajat who still leads it today. The factory is situated on a 60-hectare plot of land on a hillside with an excellent and uninterrupted view of the Java Sea. It produces an incredible range of internationally-distributed products with a local touch, that includes fine china, porcelain, stoneware and bone china. Sango works with talented designers from Europe, USA and Indonesia to develop its products and make innovations in design. Products are distributed to Europe, USA and all across Indonesia. The factory employs hundreds of staff members who handle the production process and operate sophisticated specialized equipment for ceramics production.

Local factory staff members (outside the managerial staff) are simple and friendly people, leading quiet lives in a small village. They communicate in Javanese (local language) and Indonesian, though some of them might know limited English or other languages. Artists will be accompanied by an assistant to communicate and interact with local residents.

Semarang is the capital city of Central Java Province and the 5th largest city in Indonesia. It is home to modern urbanites and it facilitates modern living. The weather is warm to hot during the day with an average temperature of 320C. There’s a variety of local, traditional, and international food choices available around the city. Public transportation modes are available and easily accessible. However, artists may consider renting a motorcycle or a car and request to be accompanied by a guide or a liaison officer (LO), to travel to farther destinations. Semarang has many interesting sights to visit, such as the historical Dutch Building built in 1904 - Lawang Sewu (thousand doors), and Pagoda Buddhagaya Watugong, the tallest pagoda in Indonesia.
