What is Project

MainStream?

• Project MainStream is a collaboration led by the World

Economic Forum and Ellen MacArthur Foundation, with

McKinsey & Company as knowledge partner.

• MainStream will accelerate the transition to the circular

economy by taking collaboration to a new level

• This will unlock the stalemates that individual organisations

cannot resolve, even working with their own partners and

supply chains.

Eco-design

(starting with

paper)

Develop simple eco-design rules for paper

products, to give essential guidance for

designers and developers without limiting

innovation / introduction of new techniques.

Asset tracking

Deploy asset tracking in industry-specific value

chains. Build asset database to integrate with

enterprise data, gauge remaining useful life, and

recover residual value.

These 3 were selected from 7 bids from participating organisations. We

intend further analysis, and a second wave of delivery projects, in 2015.

▪ The linear economy is the the dominant model developed since the

industrial revolution. It will take an exceptional “systems intervention” to

change this into a circular economy.

▪ OUR CHANGE HYPOTHESIS –

Effective change is driven by commitment supported by facts

▪ WE HAVE DEVELOPED A ROUNDTABLE PROCESS COMPRISING

– Convening the necessary industry actors

– Illustrating the economic benefit of potential moves towards the

circular economy

– Building cross-industry dialogue, consensus, and feedback

– Driving proof of concept through working group projects
