AimOur overall aims are to develop readers who:-

Are enthusiastic and confident readers who can understand a wide range of texts. read for interest, information and enjoyment.

RationaleReading is a multi-strategy approach to understanding the written word. It is not simply the decoding of marks on the page but involves the ability to read with understanding a wide range of different texts, including fiction, non-fiction, real world texts such as labels, captions, lists and environmental print. Competence in reading is the key to independent learning and therefore the teaching of reading is given a high priority by all staff. Success in reading has a direct effect on progress in all areas of the curriculum and is crucial in developing children’s self-esteem, confidence and motivation.

Specific Aims Children should:

Read aloud fluently and with expression; Read for meaning; Read texts critically; Read a wide range of fiction, poetry and non-fiction materials; Use all cueing strategies for reading including:

o Phonic (sounding the letters and blending them together o Visual (whole word recognition and analogy with known wordso Contextual (use of picture and background knowledge o Grammatical (which words make sense

Listen to texts attentively.

Teaching ApproachesP1-3We will use the Storyworlds Reading Scheme which has been designed to meet the demand for a reading programme which enables teachers to develop pupils’ literacy skills using a variety of methods.

There are 12 stages in total-

On completion of Stage 9 the children will move to Literacy World Stage 1.

Storyworlds Bridges (stages 10-12) may be used by children in P3 who have already completed the 9 main stages or by children further up the school who require additional work before commencing Literacy World.

Stages 1-3 to be completed in Primary 1Stages 4-6 to be completed in Primary 2Stages 7-9 to be completed in Primary 3

Each world has 4 stages – Our World, Animal World, Fantasy World and Once Upon a Time World.

Before beginning Stage 1 complete word building and readiness for reading exercises and activities. Stage 1 can then commence depending on children’s ability.

Books are taught in school first prior to being sent home.

Stages 1-3

STAGE 1 Introduce the book and story. Question and answer. Read the story through. Children learn the key words.Three reading days per week. Non-reading days, activities completed.

STAGE 2 Three reading days per week. Non-reading days, activities covered.STAGE 3 Three reading days per week. Day 1, first half of book. Day 2, second half of

book.Additional books are available, as home readers.

Stages 4-9Top 2 Groups

In each world 3 out of the 4 books should be covered for class reading (see grid for suggested organisation). The book being used as a home reader should be sent home week 1 when a new world is introduced. Then as the ‘world’ progresses the book taught in class should go home as a home reader the following week.

For example

Week 1 Home Reader – Sam hides Red TedClass Reader – Red Ted goes to school

Week 2 Home Reader – Red Ted goes to schoolClass Reader – Lucy loses Red Ted

Week 1 Home Reader – Lucy loses Red TedClass Reader – Red Ted at the Beach

Each Class reading book should take 2 reading days ie,

day 1 – pages covered 2-6 (stages 4-5) pages 2-8 (stages 6-9)day 2 – whole book covered

If a group does class reading 2 days a week one book should be covered each week. Therefore it should take 3 weeks to complete each world, and 12 weeks to complete each stage.

Naturally less able children will have to work at a slower pace, and perhaps complete all 4 books of each world for every stage as class readers, and it may take longer than 2 reading days to complete one book. The teacher should use his/her professional judgment to decide the best way of working for individual children/groups.

Novel StudiesNovels are used in a variety of ways to further support and extend the teaching of reading - whole class lessons, to extend individual groups and the widening of pupil experiences / enjoyment of text.
