And ris-ing prices are expectedfor consumers of fueloil, propane and elec-tricity as well. With thiswinter’s forecast, ensur-ing your home is en-ergy-wise is an essentialstep for all home own-

ers. While natural gasusage leads Americanhomes with 62 percent,electricity (27 percent)and heating oil (2 per-cent) also are con-sumed by Americanhome owners and cancontribute to energy in-efficiencies. Fuel op-tions for home ownerslargely depend on theregion — in the North-east, fuel oil or electricityare most prominentwhile in rural areas,choices are often limitedto propane and wood.Elsewhere, natural gasand electricity are themain choices. No matterwhat your heating fueloptions are, home own-ers can reduce theircosts. Reducing fuel costscan involve both short-

term and long-term so-lutions and range fromsimple, inexpensivechanges to major homemodifications. Here aresome ways that you cankeep the cold out andthe costs down this win-ter:Caulk and seal airleaks in your house. Byreducing air leaks, anaverage household cancut 10 percent of theirmonthly energy bill.While sealing windowsand doors can help,usually the worst cul-prits are utility cut-throughs for pipes(plumping penetra-tions), gaps aroundchimneys and recessedlights in insulated ceil-ings, and unfinishedspaces behind cup-boards and closets.Your local builder or re-
