Philip McAfeeNovember was a joyous month, beingthai Linda was married, and a grand timefor us to be together again, before oursoon-to-be separation. The McAfee clan

willnow be spread a little more. Tabita and1should, with the blessing of God, get tose e everyone every four years as we returnto the U.S. for furlough. Our first separation willonly be one year and a half, sinceour first furlough is planned for May orJune of 1983.December was a pleasant month, withprepara tion for the Chris tmas programwhich was a success , at trac ting a largecrowd. Many stood in front of the doorsand windows trying to hear the program.Joseph (Phil) during one scene , had tokeep the baby Jesus from rollingout ofthec rib while holding the roo f of the st able ,which began to f ll Tabita participated inthe program singing in the choir.

The chu rch at Urias Magalhaes isdesperately in need of funds to launchconstruction of a permanent church building. We built a littlemeeting place on the lot ofone of the members, as a temporaryhousing place. Our ca r is in need ofrepairs, and new tires. We need funds toset aside for ou r furlough, and money torepay the Mission for the loan for a downpayment on ou r apartment. Any helpwould be a blessing. Perhaps your churchcan consider an increase in your monthlygiving, as a few have (Praise God forthem ), or perhaps a special program andoffering for the immediate needs. Each New Year brings new andexcit ing things. On January the 21st,Tabita an d 1 were moved into our newhome, a two-bedroom apartment on thefourth floor. Thanks to the Mission, wewere able to take ou t a loan in orde r tomake a down payment on it. We are quitea ways f rom the churches we work with,bu t at least we ar e spend ing money onsomething that willone day be ours. Godwilling

BRASILIA UPDATEEditorial Irom the Department of

Tour i sm in Bras i l iaAilbig modern cities in the world owetheiroriginto severalreasons: political sociological, strategic, etc. Brasilia wasplanned and carefully thought out. Evenbefore becoming a reality it has represented the hopes of many, and the waitwas long.Nothinghad been done inhaste,

and it took more than a century to materialize, patiently and wisely awaiting theproper moment to become a reality.Difficult means of communication andt ranspo rt at ion made t he transfer of thegovernment seat unpracticable. With modern possibilities of transportation, such as airplanes, came a newimpulse. Aviation, together withnew roadconstruction methods and machinery, brought the dream closer to realitytherebydestroying the argumentsagainstit. Usually citiesare founded for History, but Brasilia hadbeenfounded on History. After all, the city had already existed as apoint ofreference onthe maps. Ithad beena revolutionary idea in the days of 1789.Back in 1810 it had been the object ofpointless discussion for lack of anythingbetter to debate. wasmerely suggestedin a message to Congress in 1823, But itwas, again, an outburst of patriotic precautions of self-defense raised by the realization of thedanger towhich aCapitalcitybounded by the sea was exposed.Another reason was the necessity ofshielding the Government against theambitions and vested interests of partiesinvolved in the turmoil of a city alreadyoversized. It was transformed into anation-wide decision in both the 1934 an d1936 Constitutions. If is only necessary to examine demographic density figures available to visualize the problem: 8.5 million square kilometers within sight but entirely out ofreach. On a narrow strip ofAtlantic coast15 inhabitants per square kilometer, in the

interior only 0.5. 64 of the country isunpopulated. 98% of the Brazilians live inthe coast, and behind them remains anuninhabited country. The Northeast andCentral-west parts of Brazil showonlyademographic density of 0.74.

Brasilia even before itcan be said tobe the compliance of a Constitulonal provision, isa pioneer'saccomplishment, builtthrough conquest and reconquering, a

march to the West. Something concretethat had alwaysexisted onmaps -BraziliaSoil. A new and rational, as well as logicaway to distribute a growing population oapproximately 200 million souls by the endof the century.Today, Brasiliarepresents the strengthand significance of a fully accomplishedpatriotic ideal of national unity finallyachieved.
