• The Sand Creek Massacre was a tragic event that occurred during the Indian Wars of the United States. During the massacre, a group of 700 Colorado militia men attacked and destroyed a village of Cheyenne and Arapaho. Between 70-163 Native Americans were killed or mutilated; about two thirds of which were women and children.

• The Sand Creek Massacre occurred in southeastern Colorado on November 29th, 1864.

Governor John Evans

• In 1864 Governor Evans appointed the Reverend Chivington as Colonel of the Colorado Volunteers and sent him with 800 cavalry troopers to "quiet" the Indians.

Colonel John Chivington

• Chivington was a colonel in the United States Army who served in the American Indian Wars during the Colorado War and the New Mexico Campaigns of the American Civil War.

• On November 28, 1864, Colonel Chivington ordered his men to attack the encampment killing about 53 unarmed men and 110 women and children and wounding many more. Most of the dead were mutilated.

• Chivington and his men took scalps and other body parts as battle trophies, including human fetuses and male and female genitalia.

Who was ‘Black Kettle’?

• Starting in 1854, Black Kettle was the leader of the Cheyenne in southeastern Colorado. Black Kettle was a peace maker, and often accepted peace treaties to protect his tribe. He survived the Sand Creek Massacre, but was later killed during another battle.

Why did this massacre take place?

• Chivington and Colorado territorial governor John Evans adopted a hard line against Indians, whom white settlers accused of stealing livestock. Without any declaration of war, in April 1864 soldiers started attacking and destroying a number of Cheyenne camps, the largest of which included about 70 lodges, about 10% of the housing capacity of the entire Cheyenne nation.

How was the pike’s peak gold rush a significant factor?

• In November 1858, however, the discovery of gold in the Rocky Mountains in Colorado, then part of the Kansas Territory, brought on the Pikes Peak Gold Rush.

• There was a flood of European-American migrants across Cheyenne and Arapaho lands. They competed for resources and some settlers tried to stay

What was the aftermath of this event? What were the lasting outcomes?

• The Sand Creek Massacre resulted in a heavy loss of life, mostly among Cheyenne and Arapaho women and children.

• Hardest hit by the massacre were the Wutapai, Black Kettle's band. Perhaps half of the Hevhaitaniu were lost, including the chiefs Yellow Wolf and Big Man. The Oivimana led by War Bonnet, lost about half their number.
