REQUIRED PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT: CSA approved steel-toed boots/shoes, CSA approved safety glasses/goggles, hearing protection - per RETSD policy, 100% cotton coveralls

GENERAL NOTES: Operators must be trained by a teacher, demonstrate competency and receive pre-approval to operate this equipment, by the teacher/s of the Auto Body Metal shop or Automotive Technology shop.

JOB SAFETY ANALYSIS:

Step Description Hazard Controls1 Pre-operation walk around

inspection of sandblaster and surrounding area. Sandblaster side door swing should be clear of obstructions. Ensure that the side door closes properly and that the latch secures door tight.

1) Operation injuring yourself2) Operation injuring others3) Slip around machine area

1) & 2) Remove any obstructive material from door swing area.3) Clean up sand from floor area to reduce slippage. Ensure that the equipment is not damaged, if damaged do not use, notify teacher right away.

2 1) Check for exhaust fan operation. 2) Check for cabinet light operation.3) Check glass for abrasive areas.

1) Dust inhalation2) Visibility

1) Contact a teacher immediately if exhaust fan fails to start-up.2) Contact teacher and report an inoperative interior light.3) If the cabinet inspection glass has been eroded, ask a teacher to assist with its replacement or ask teacher to have it replaced.

3 1) Open doors and inspect door seals.2) Inspect bead gun for proper grounding.3) Inspect gloves to make sure they are not torn or ripped.

1) Leakage onto floor causing slipping and/or falling.2) Electrical static shock3) Sand penetrating skin causing abrasion.

1) Reseal leaking door 2) Repair ground on bead gun3) Replace gloves

4 If sandblaster passes all inspections and everything is in good working order. Turn on light, ensure both doors are sealed and secure, place hands in gloves hold bead gun with one hand and with the other hand hold what you are blasting. Press down on foot pedal with foot, a mixture of air and sand will be forced through the bead gun. Continue sandblasting until you are satisfied, job completed.

Doors not sealed and secured; 1) Dust inhalation2) Leakage onto floor causing slipping and/or falling.

Make sure doors are sealed and secure.

5 Remove foot from foot pedal, and wait until dust has settled before opening top door or side door to remove your work. Once work is removed, re-latch door/s. Shut off light, clean up any sand that has fallen around sandblaster.
