Present SWM System
• The present SWM system in the city suffers
from inefficient and costly waste collection
and street sweeping as well as
environmentally unacceptable landfill environmentally unacceptable landfill
practices. Furthermore, there is no separation
of hazardous and infectious wastes. Most
urgently, future waste disposal capacities have
to be secured, since the currently used landfill
is almost backfilled.
Collection System
There are basically two methods that are used to collect
municipal solid wastes.
• One method : House-to-house collection in which households and businesses are expected to bring out their waste in bags or bins when they hear the siren that indicates that the waste collection truck is that indicates that the waste collection truck is approaching their premises. This collection service is provided seven days a week.
• Second method : In peripheral areas, uses large bins which are left in the street and emptied mechanically into compactor trucks.
The collection trucks may take the waste directly to the
landfill or deliver it to a transfer station

• The major types of hazardous waste
generated in the city are considered to be
waste oil and hazardous healthcare waste

by a private company that recycles the oil.

installed in the landfill.

Collection Financing Resources
• The main source for financing SWM services in
Sana’a are the Cleaning and Improvement
Funds (CIFs), which are independent public
