OBITUARY

Luis Chavez Mendoza, age 91, passed away peacefully on Nov. 9, 2018 at Provencio Hope Assisted Living Home in Tucson with his beloved wife of 68 years, Cecelia, at his side. Luis was born on April 6, 1927, in Hayden, Arizona where he attended school and worked at his parents’ grocery store, M & M Grocery. He met the love of his life, Cecelia Montano, at Hayden High School in 1944. As a minor at age 17 and anxious to join the WWII war effort, Luis enlisted in the U. S. Navy in May 1945 with the consent of his father, Luis G. Mendoza. The war ended the following year and Luis returned to Arizona to attend the University of Arizona College of Pharmacy. He and Cecelia were married at St. Joseph’s Church in Hayden, on Nov. 5, 1950 and following his graduation from U of A in 1951 as a Pharmacist they lived in Hayden, Ray and Globe where he

Luis Chavez Mendozaworked serving the then booming mining towns. In 1958 they bought the Hayden Drug Store where they worked side by side until it closed in 1996 after 38 years in business. Their drug store was an American icon, having a popular soda fountain that served the community classic soda fountain fare: burgers, malts, cherry sodas and ice cream sundaes. Luis was a dedicated and caring Pharmacist for his community often being called after hours, late at night, and weekends for emergency prescriptions or refills. He also provided free delivery service to his customers, often times on his way home from the store at night. After closing the Hayden Drug Store in 1996, Luis went to work as a Pharmacist at the Kearny hospital and drug store. He also worked at the San Manuel Drug Store. Luis was an accomplished piano player and as a young man played in his father’s dance band. He passed his love for latin jazz, boleros and boogie woogie onto his three children all of whom played musical instruments, with his youngest son, Ernie, a professional drummer. Among his hobbies, Luis was an avid golfer and bowler. He loved to camp and fish in the White Mountains with his family instilling in his children a love for the great outdoors. He had a green thumb attending to his vegetable garden, often times in the dark with a head lamp after work. He and his dad, Luis G. would can chiles together, with the help of a bottle of Old Crow at their side. Luis greatly admired his father and after store hours, you could find them sharing a cold beer while watching Sanford and Son on the little B & W TV by the pharmacy counter. Luis had a zest for flying and in 1973 he got his private pilot’s license and bought a Cesna 150. He loved to fly out of the Kearny airport and explore the surrounding communities by air often flying low altitude over his buddies on the Hayden and Kearny golf courses. His interest in WWII history led him to become a Lifetime Member of the Confederate Air Force (now known as the Commemorative Air Force), Arizona Wing, where he and Cecelia would attend work weekends and social events. One of Luis’ most memorable events in his life was when he flew in the Wing’s B-17, Sentimental Journey, below the rim of the Grand Canyon. Luis is survived by his wife Cecelia of 68 years, his two sons Luis III of Portal, Ernest (Amy) of Tucson, and his daughter, Priscilla (Casey O’Brien) of Elgin; grandsons Ernest II (Misty), Luis IV, and Adam Dane (Devon); and 4 great-grandchildren. A Memorial Mass will be held at Saint Joseph’s Catholic Church, Hayden on Dec. 15, 2018 at 10 a.m. preceded by a Rosary at 9:30 a.m. A reception will follow at the Hayden Community Center.

First Avenue Elementary students are continuing their annual “Comfort Items” drive to support Veterans at the Tucson VA hospital. The campaign started Veteran’s Day weekend with letters and lists going home with students. The drive will end Thursday, Dec. 13, at First Avenue’s Christmas Village, Family Night. “The Veterans are so appreciative of the students’ recognition and support each year,” said first grade teacher Isabel Austin. “They recognize and value the patriotism of our small town school, which is often not present in bigger schools,” she added. “This year, we would like to invite community members and groups to “Sponsor a Class,” said Deb Mansager. “The class with the largest donation will win a ‘walking field trip’ to Mel’s for their choice of an ice cream cone or a Chilly Willie,” she said. There are 14 class rooms at First Ave. Elementary. Comfort Items are virtually anything that would help make a Veteran patient’s stay more comfortable according to Austin. Hand and body lotion, lip balm, deodorant, toothpaste and denture cleaners are popular, as are knitted caps and shawls, non-skid slipper socks and shower shoes,” she said. For Veterans with children, hand puppets, activity kits and books are popular, along with writing paper, envelopes and stamps Austin explained. “The Tucson VA cares for a wide range of Veterans, men and women of many ages. If you ask yourself, ‘Could a Veteran use this?’ the answer is probably ‘Yes’.” Mansager said. Search/Google “VA hospital comfort items” to see a long list of suggestions. “All local service groups and churches, such as the Knights of Columbus and the Elks, VFW and American Legion, are invited to ‘adopt a classroom,’” Mansager said.

The new Oracle Sun Life Family Health Center is completed and opened on Dec. 3, 2018. Al Gutierrez, Practice Manager, says it will be a “state of the art building, very beautiful with a rustic look.” It will be larger than their current facility located in the Pinal County building. The new building is located at 1040 W. American Avenue. The increased area in the building will allow for more

examination rooms, office space and a better reception and waiting area. Al manages both the San Manuel Family Health Center in San Manuel and the Oracle facility. “It has been amazing to see how far Sun Life has grown in the Tri-Community,” Al said. When Sun Life first took over the old San Manuel Hospital building, built in 1954, “it took a lot of reconstruction and refurbishing of everything.” He said he is “proud of the progress that Sun Life has made in the area.”

Al grew up in the Tri-Community and is a 1978 graduate of San Manuel High School. He has family that still lives in the area. “San Manuel gave me and my family everything. This is my way of giving back to the community. It has been rewarding to see people I know and went to school with use our health facilities and even some that have medically retired. It has been an adventure but everything is positive,” Al said. Following high school, Al went into the

education field and was an administrator in the Tucson School District. He went into the private sector, eventually hiring on with Sun Life. “Sun Life is the best company I have ever worked for. We are like a family,” he said. Al would like to see the area grow more, especially San Manuel. The Oracle area is growing and it is hoped that the people in the Tri-Community and the SaddleBrooke area learn more about Sun Life and the health services they can provide.

Introducing math and science to young children doesn’t have to be complicated. Parents and caregivers don’t have to wait until a child can solve written math problems or conduct complex science experiments. Activities such as finger painting, building blocks and baking are fun and interactive ways to build science and math skills in young kids. About 90 percent of a child’s critical brain development occurs before age 5, meaning the early years represent an ideal time to introduce Science, Engineering, Technology, and Math (STEM) skills to kids. “Young children learn naturally by exploring their environments,” said Ginger Sandweg, First Things First senior director for early learning. “What appears to adults as play is really forming and testing theories, and trying out different variables. This type of learning goes hand in hand

with how young children learn best, using multiple senses (seeing, hearing, touching, tasting, and smelling) to discover the world around them.” According to the Center for Early Education in STEM, simple childhood games can promote significant STEM skills at a much earlier age. The years before kindergarten, are a critical period to help develop these skills through fun activities that get their hands and minds working. Parents and caregivers can be ready with this list of great ideas to keep your child busy and build those early skills for STEM. First Things First offers these activities:• Building structures – knocking them down, testing them with weight, etc. – engages kids in reasoning about physics. • Cooking engages children in science and math through measuring ingredients and seeing how foods combine and change.

Building a love of math and science starts early in life

San Manuel junior Caleb Quintero had dunked in practice but never in a game, that is until last Friday

when he threw it down against visiting San Miguel in the Miners’ 69 – 28 blowout victory. After starting the season with three-straight losses against 4A and 5A teams, the Miners boys’ basketball team has won two-in-a-row, including Friday’s 2A

South Region-opener over the Vipers. As a result of the victory, the Miners sit alone atop the region standings. Up next: Dec. 5 at Coolidge, Dec. 7 vs. Hayden and Dec. 11 vs. San Carlos. All games are scheduled for 7 p.m.

Rodriguez told the Miner in February that he’d wrestle at 120 this season. “I want to wrestle in the 120’s,” he said then. “My training never stops, and I started working as soon as I returned home.” The results of his hard work are evident. This is a busy time of year for Santa Claus, but he will be making some time to come visit with youngsters and “young-at-heart-sters” this holiday season. Mr. Claus will make his first stop in Oracle at the Oracle Fire Station on Friday, Dec. 14, from 5-7 p.m. There will be a Christmas stocking, hot chocolate and cookies for all and while you wait to talk to the celebrity of the season, there will be letters to Santa, drawing/coloring and a jumping castle. Parents are encouraged to bring a flashlight because it could get really dark if you have to park on American Avenue. Mr. Claus’ next stop will be in Mammoth

on Dec. 15. The Mammoth Volunteer Fire Department will drive Santa Claus around town between 4:30 and 6 p.m. so if you hear the fire sirens, head outside to wave at the man in red. At 6 p.m., Santa will be delivered to the San Pedro Valley Lions Club building where Santa’s Elves (also known as Lions) will be handing out Christmas goodie bags and kids can tell Santa Claus what they’d like for Christmas. Santa makes another stop in the Tri-Community on Sunday, Dec. 16, this time in San Manuel at the San Manuel Elks Lodge during the annual Elks Children’s

Christmas Party. The festivities will begin at 1 p.m. and conclude at 3 p.m. If you miss seeing the Man in Red during these three stops, never fear – you can still tell Santa Claus what your heart desires for this year. Tri-Community children can mail their wishes to Santa in the special mailboxes placed around the area: La Casita in Mammoth; San Manuel Library; and the Oracle Fire Station. Letters can also be placed through the slot in the door at the Miner office in San Manuel. Santa has also set up a special email address if you want to send your wishes to him electronically. The email address is [email protected]. This year, Mr. Claus has given us permission

to accept letters through our Facebook page (www.Facebook.com/CopperArea). Just send us a message (PM) with your child’s letter to Santa.

Please be sure to include the town where you live so we can publish it in the right newspaper. Hurry and get your letters in quickly so they can be

forwarded to the North Pole in plenty of time for the big day. The deadline to mail letters in Santa’s special mailbox is Dec. 14.

Santa needs time to get all the requests fulfilled. Letters will be published on Dec. 19.

Santa Claus will be in the Tri-Community Dec. 14-16.
