God Speaks Today/ Dios Habla Hoy


Palm Sunday– Luke 19:28-40

Today, Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord (also known as Passion Sunday and as Hosanna Sunday in the Eastern Rite churches), Christians everywhere commemorate Jesus' triumphal entrance into the city of Jerusalem on the week in which he suffered. As we heard in today’s gospel, which was read from the entrance of the Church, people welcomed Jesus with joy into the holy city waiving palm and olive branches while praising him has the long awaited king-messiah. In and through Holy Week (The Great Week) Christians participate in the suffering, death and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. Through our liturgies, services, devotions and prayers we unite ourselves to Jesus Christ and in doing so we receive the graces and fruits of his redeeming love. We accompany him in his suffering and are united in his victory over death. We are present to him and he is present to us. The Paschal Mystery (the Passover of the Lord – the suffering, death, and resurrection of Jesus) renews and transforms us each year. We are called to enter into his death and rise with him – to die to our selfishness and to be born again in faith, hope, and love. Today catechumens enter their final stage of preparation to be in-corpo-rated into Jesus Christ and his Body, the Church. Today the Gospel reading is read at the entrance of the church, remembering Jesus’ entrance through Jerusalem’s gates, and it thus invites us to open the door of our hearts and lives, homes and parishes, to Jesus Christ who is the one true King. Today the priest processes in as the community waives palm and olive branches in calling out the same ‘Hosannas’ (“save us now”) that the people in Jerusalem cried out. Thus we recognize that only Jesus Christ truly saves, and saves us “in every way in which a person can be saved.” Today the entire “Passion of the Lord” is read aloud while standing in attentive reverence, involving us in an interactive reading (Jesus, crowd, narrator, Pilate, Caiaphas, Peter, the Centurion, etc.); and in so doing, calls us toward a profound participation in the passion of the Lord. This Holy Week must be different from all other weeks, we must live it differently, and it will make a great difference in our lives. From victory procession to covenantal supper, from suffering to death, from burial to resurrection, Holy Week calls us to “deny ourselves, take up our cross, and follow Jesus,” and thus come to share in the incomparable joy of his resurrection. Holy Week will renew us, as Christians and as a Church, so as to live the Gospel more authentically and proclaim it with bold generosity.

He said, “Go into the village opposite you, and as you enter it you will find a colt tethered on which no one has ever sat. Untie it and bring it here. And if anyone should ask you, ‘Why are you untying it?’ you will answer, ‘The Master has need of it.’” So those who had been sent went off and

found everything just as he had told them. And as they were untying the colt, its owners said to them, “Why are you untying this colt?” They answered, “The Master has need of it.” So they brought it to Jesus, threw their cloaks over the colt, and helped Jesus to mount. As he rode along, the people were spreading their cloaks on the road; and now as he was approaching the slope of the Mount of Olives, the whole multitude of his disciples began to praise God aloud with joy for all the mighty deeds they had seen. They proclaimed: “Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord. Peace in heaven and glory in the highest.” Some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to him, “Teacher, rebuke your disciples.” He said in reply, “I tell you, if they keep silent, the stones will cry out!”

2013 Holy Week

The greatest of all Catholic feasts takes place during Holy Week , the center of the Church year. Holy week begins with Palm Sunday, the day of Jesus’ arrival in Jerusalem, when he rose in on a donkey and was welcomed by the people waving palm branches. In the following week, Holy Thursday, the last day of Lent, celebrates the Last Supper; it is followed by Good Friday, the anniversary of Jesus’ crucifixion. On Saturday, churches hold a special Mass, and during the night Catholics hold the Easter Vigil, which anticipates Jesus' Resurrection on the following day—the glorious day of Easter Sunday.

Palm Sunday—is a moveable feast which always falls on the Sunday before Easter. The feast commemorates an event reported by all four Canonical Gospels Mark 11:1-11, Matthew 21:1-11, Luke 19:28-44, and John 12:12-19 - the Triumphal Entry of Jesus into Jerusalem in the days before his Passion. The difficulty of procuring palms for that day's ceremonies in unfavorable climates for palms led to the substitution of boughs of box, yew, willow or other native trees. The Sunday was often designated by the names of these trees, as Yew Sunday or by the general term Branch Sunday.

Holy Tuesday—Archbishop Thomas Wenski will celebrate Holy Tuesday with a Solemn Chrism Mass at the Cathedral of St. Mary located at 7525 Pope John Paul II Ave (N.W. 2nd). During the Mass, all the priests of the Archdiocese will renew their commitment to priestly service and ask those present to pray for them. Archbishop Thomas Wenski will also bless the holy oils that will be used in the parishes by the priests throughout the year for baptisms, confirmations and anointing of the sick.

Holy Thursday- The liturgy, celebrated in the evening because Passover began at sundown, also shows both the worth God ascribes to the humility of service, and the need for cleansing with water (a symbol of baptism) in the Mandatum, or washing in

Jesus' washing the feet of His disciples, and in the priest's stripping and washing of the altar. Cleansing, in fact, gave this day of Holy Week the name Maundy Thursday. The action of the Church on this night also witnesses to the Church's esteem for Christ's Body present in the consecrated Host in the Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, carried in solemn procession to the flower-bedecked Altar of Repose, where it will remain 'entombed' until the communion service on Good Friday. No Mass will be celebrated again in the Church until the Easter Vigil proclaims the Resurrection. And finally, there is the Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament by the people during the night, just as the disciples stayed with the Lord during His agony on the Mount of Olives before the betrayal by Judas.

Good Friday- On Good Friday, the entire Church fixes her gaze on the Cross at Calvary. It is the only day in the year that the catholic Church does not celebrate Mass (although there is a Liturgy). Each member of the Church tries to understand at what cost Christ has won our redemption. In the solemn ceremonies of Good Friday, in the Adoration of the Cross, in the chanting of the 'Reproaches', in the reading of the Passion, and in receiving the pre-consecrated Host, we unite ourselves to our Savior, and we contemplate our own death to sin in the Death of our Lord. The Church - stripped of its ornaments, the altar bare, and with the door of the empty tabernacle standing open - is as if in mourning. In the fourth century the Apostolic Constitutions described this day as a 'day of mourning, not a day of festive joy,' and this day was called the 'Pasch (passage) of the Crucifixion.' The liturgical observance of this day of Christ's suffering, crucifixion and death evidently has been in existence from the earliest days of the Church. No Mass is celebrated on this day, but the service of Good Friday is called the Mass of the Pre-sanctified because Communion (in the species of bread) which had already been consecrated on Holy Thursday is given to the people.

It appears the Holy Spirit spoke — and loudly — to the cardinals gathered in conclave in the Sistine Chapel. And the reaction from Catholics in South Florida was as joyous as that of those gathered in St. Peter’s Square when white smoke began bellowing out of the Vatican chimney around 2 p.m. Miami time. Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio — Pope Francis as of March 13— is a Jesuit priest of Italian descent who spent most of his priestly life in pastoral ministry in Argentina. He is known for taking the bus to work and living simply. He became auxiliary bishop of Buenos Aires in 1992 and archbishop in 1998. Pope John Paul II made him a cardinal in 2001. HIS FIRST WORDS: Good evening! You know that the duty of the conclave was to provide Rome with a bishop. It looks as if my brothers the cardinals went to fetch him from the end of the world! I’d like to thank you for your welcome. The people of Rome: thank you! I’d like to pray for Benedict XVI. Let’s pray altogether for him so that the

Madonna can look after him.” [Then Pope Francis said the Lord's Prayer, the Hail Mary and the Gloria.] And now let’s start working together, walking together, in the Church of Rome. This is the path of brotherhood and trust. Let’s pray for each other because of the great brotherhood of the world. I pray the path will be fruitful for this beautiful city. Now I will bless you. But I’d like to ask you a favour, for your prayer to bless me as your bishop. Let’s pray silently, your prayer for me. Domingo de Ramos: Celebramos la entrada triunfal de Jesús a Jerusalén en la que todo el pueblo lo alaba como rey con cantos y palmas. Por esto, nosotros llevamos nuestras palmas a la Iglesia para que las bendigan ese día y participamos en la misa. Jueves Santo:

Este día recordamos la Última Cena de Jesús con sus apóstoles en la que les lavó los pies dándonos un ejemplo de servicio. En la Última Cena, Jesús se quedó con nosotros en el pan y en el vino, nos dejó su cuerpo y su sangre. Es el jueves santo cuando instituyó la Eucaristía y el Sacerdocio. Al terminar la última cena, Jesús se fue a orar, al Huerto de los Olivos. Ahí pasó toda la noche y después de mucho tiempo de oración, llegaron a aprehenderlo.

Viernes Santo: Ese día recordamos la Pasión de Nuestro Señor: Su prisión, los interrogatorios de Herodes y Pilato; la flagelación, la coronación de espinas y la crucifixión. Lo conmemoramos con un Vía Crucis solemne y con la ceremonia de la Adoración de la Cruz. Sábado Santo o Sábado de Gloria: Se recuerda el día que pasó entre la muerte y la Resurrección de Jesús. Es un día de luto y tristeza pues no tenemos a Jesús entre nosotros. Las imágenes se cubren y los sagrarios están abiertos. Por la noche se lleva a cabo una vigilia pascual para celebrar la Resurrección de Jesús. Vigilia quiere decir “ la tarde y noche anteriores a una fiesta.” En esta celebración se acostumbra bendecir el agua y encender las velas en señal de la Resurrección de Cristo, la gran fiesta de los católicos. Domingo de Resurrección o Domingo de Pascua: Es el día más importante y más alegre para todos nosotros, los católicos, ya que Jesús venció a la muerte y nos dio la vida. Esto quiere decir que Cristo nos da la oportunidad de salvarnos, de entrar al Cielo y vivir siempre felices en compañía de Dios. Pascua es el paso de la muerte a la vida.

¿Por qué la Semana Santa cambia de fecha cada año? El pueblo judío celebraba la fiesta de pascua en recuerdo de la liberación de la esclavitud de Egipto, el día de la primera luna llena de primavera. Esta fecha la fijaban en base al año lunar y no al año solar de nuestro calendario moderno. Es por esta razón que cada año la Semana Santa cambia de día, pues se le hace coincidir con la luna llena. En la fiesta de la Pascua, los judíos se reunían a comer cordero asado y ensaladas de hierbas amargas, recitar bendiciones y cantar salmos. Brindaban por la liberación de la esclavitud. Jesús es el nuevo cordero pascual que nos trae la nueva liberación, del pecado y de la muerte.

Pon algún propósito concreto a seguir para cada uno de los días de la Semana Santa. Y Asiste en familia a los oficios y ceremonias propios de esta semana porque la vivencia cristiana de estos misterios debe ser comunitaria.

God Speaks Today/ Dios Habla Hoy

Evangelio de la Semana Lucas 22:14-23:56

Hoy, domingo de Ramos de la Pasión del Señor (también conocido como el Domingo de la Pasión y como el Domingo del Hosanna en los Ritos Orientales de la Iglesia), cristianos mundialmente conmemoraran la entrada triunfal de Jesús a la ciudad de Jerusalén en la semana en que sufrió. Como escuchamos en el evangelio de hoy, que fue proclamado desde la entrada de la Iglesia, el pueblo recibió a Jesús a la ciudad santa con gozo con ramos de palmas y de olivos, alabándolo como su gran esperado rey-mesías. En y a través de Semana Santa (la Gran Semana) los cristianos participan del sufrimiento, muerte y resurrección de nuestro Señor Jesucristo. A través de nuestras liturgias, servicios, devociones y acciones nos unimos a Jesús y de esta manera recibimos las gracias y frutos de su amor redentor. Lo acompañamos en su sufrimiento y nos unimos en su victoria sobre la muerte. Estamos presente a él y el está presente para nosotros. El Misterio Pascual (la Pascua del Señor – el sufrimiento, muerte, y resurrección de Jesús) nos renueva y transforma cada año. Somos invitados a entrar en su muerte y resucitar con el – a morir a nuestro egoísmo para renacer en fe, esperanza, y amor. Hoy los catecúmenos entran su etapa final de preparación a ser in-corpo-rados en Jesucristo y en su Cuerpo, la Iglesia. Hoy el evangelio es proclamado desde la entrada de la iglesia, recordando la entrada de Jesús por los portones de Jerusalén, y así nos invita a abrir las puertas de nuestros corazones, vidas, hogares y parroquias, a Jesucristo quien es el único verdadero rey. Hoy el sacerdote procede mientras la comunidad levantan ramos de palmas y olivos y claman sus ‘Hosannas’ (‘sálvanos ya’) que el pueblo de Jerusalén clamo. Así reconocemos que solamente Jesucristo verazmente salva, y nos salva “de todo modo en que una persona puede ser salvada.” Hoy leemos la narración completa de “la pasión del Señor” de pie en atención reverenda, así involucrándonos en una lectura interactiva (Jesús, la muchedumbre, el narrador, Pilatos, Caifás, Pedro, el Centurión, etc.). De esa manera se nos invita a una profunda participación en la pasión del Señor. Esta Semana Santa tiene que ser diferente a todas las otras semanas; debemos vivirla de manera diferente, y hará una gran diferencia en nuestras vidas. De procesión victoriosa a cena de nueva alianza, de sufrimiento a la muerte, de entierro a resurrección, la Semana Santa nos llama con las palabras de Jesús: “niéguense a sí mismos, tomen su cruz, y síganme,” y así compartan el gozo incomparable de la resurrección. La Semana Santa nos renovara, como cristianos y como Iglesia, para poder vivir el Evangelio con mayor autenticidad y proclamarlo con mayor coraje y generosidad.

En aquel tiempo, Jesús echó a andar delante, subiendo hacia Jerusalén. Al acercarse a Befaré y Betania, junto al monte llamado de los Olivos, mandó a dos discípulos, diciéndoles: “Id a la aldea de enfrente; al entrar, encontraréis un borrico atado, que nadie ha montado todavía. Desatadlo y traedlo. Y si alguien os pregunta: “¿Por qué lo desatáis?”, contestadle: “El Señor lo necesita”. Ellos fueron y lo encontraron como les había dicho. Mientras desataban el

borrico, los dueños les preguntaron: “¿Por qué desatáis el borrico?” Ellos contestaron: “El Señor lo necesita.” Se lo llevaron a Jesús, lo aparejaron con sus mantos y le ayudaron a montar. Según iba avanzando, la gente alfombraba el camino con los mantos. Y, cuando se acercaba ya la bajada del monte de los Olivos, la masa de los discípulos, entusiasmados, se pusieron a alabar a Dios a gritos, por todos los milagros que habían visto, diciendo: “¡Bendito el que viene como rey, en nombre del Señor! Paz en el cielo y gloria en lo alto.”

La lectura de hoy nos presenta tres ideas importantes: • En los evangelios leemos como Jesús entro a la ciudad de Jerusalén, no como guerrero pero en humildad. El “se humillo, aceptando la muerte, y hasta muerte en cruz” por nosotros, y “Dios lo exalto y su nombre grandemente” (Filipenses 2). El Domingo de Ramos marca el comienzo de nuestra participación en la Pasión del Señor.

• El evangelio nos invita a “abrir de par a par las puertas de nuestros corazones a Cristo” (el lema del Jubileo del año 2000). En recibiendo a Jesús en nuestras vidas, todo en nosotros comienza transformar y cambiar. En el poder del Espíritu Santo podemos en Jesucristo participar en la transformación del mundo.

• Cada cristiano entra personalmente, y participa, en el Misterio Pascual del Señor a través de los Sacramentos de Bautismo, Confirmación, y Eucaristía (de veras, a través de todos los sacramentos). Las gracias y fruto de la Pascua de Cristo (crucifixión, muerte, entierro, resurrección) nos incorpora en su Cuerpo, la Iglesia, y nos fortalece para la misión de vivir y compartir el Evangelio de Jesús en nuestro mundo.
