From the President…

Its that time of the year again. The Design In Wood exhibition is almost upon us. Start making your plans now and get started on your entry. Entry forms are at our sponsors and also available on-line at

http://www.sdfair.com/pdf/05entry_wood.pdf.

This year you can also enter online at

http://www.entrycenter.com/events.aspx?EventID=1.

We need you to enter. At this time entries are running behind. Hopefully things will pick up. But we need you to enter. Remember that we have two categories and six awards reserved just for SDFWA members. First, second and third place awards for amateur category and first, second and third place awards for the professional category. Amateur class is reserved for members who have not previously won a ribbon and professional class is for members who have previously won. These are additional awards available only to SDFWA members and are in addition to the awards available to all entries. So you could win an award in your class and also receive tone of these awards.

The Design In Wood show requires lots of help from our members. We need your help for set up, tear down and also during the show. The biggest job is set-up. The more help the better. No experience is necessary, just show up at the fair grounds and we can put you to work. Bring a screw gun if you have one but it is not necessary. Harry Feucht always supplies us with good food. We have pastry and coffee in the morning and a hot lunch around noon.

We also need volunteers to work in the 18th century cabinet shop making children’s chairs. Each year we produce about 50 chairs for charity. These are hand made during the fair by our members. It is a great way to learn and practice hand tool techniques. If you want to learn how they did it in the old days sign up and we will teach you some new methods. We also need volunteers to work the floor during the show. We have something new this year. Sign up sheets for all shifts are available on line at http://www.sdfwa.org/DIWVolunteerSched.html. I looked at it today and people are signing up. But we still have lots of times available. All volunteers receive fair tickets. The more you volunteer, the more tickets you get. Work a few shifts and treat your family. Besides being a lot of fun it is a good way to get to know your fellow members. This is our big event for the year so sign up and plan to help. See Bob Stevenson’s message to sign up and help.

We have about 40 volunteers for the Camp Pendleton Playhouse Project. Things are progressing nicely. See more photos at the back of this issue. We will have more pictures at the meeting. We should be complete by the next meeting.

We also completed four new cabinets in February. See pictures of the build in this issue. Christian Becksvoort is our September fall program speaker. His specialty is Shaker furniture. You can see his

work on his web site at http://www.chbecksvoort.com/. Remember to bring something for the brag table. See you at the meeting. Ed Gladney, President 858-484-4366, [email protected]

TO HELP OUT AT SET UP: We will start Monday, May 23, at 8:30am, in the Mission Tower Building on the Fairgrounds. Use the Solana Gate or park in the main lot and walk in. Volunteers will receive two (2) passes to the fair for each shift signed up for in both the gallery and the chair shop. Sign up for several shifts and get enough tickets for the whole family and friends.

If you help with set up, you get free refreshments, a free meal, and four (4) passes for each day worked.

MEMBERSHIP REPORT FOR APRIL 2005 As of 10 April our membership is 1343, 3.7% below the number on 10 April 2004. The renewal rate is 76% of the closing membership for 2004, 3% below the rate at this date last year. From the feedback we've received, a number of losses have been from deaths, relocation outside San Diego area, giving up woodworking, and ill health. These constitute only a small portion of the members who have not renewed. We have 118 new members joining for 2005, a number that will increase during the Design in Wood Show and at the Fall Seminar. Len Wener, Membership Chairman 619-222-5521, [email protected]

I will have patterns and wood at the April meeting, and would love to see you get involved in this truly satisfying endeavor.

The building next to the Collins shop is being demolished, and we did some serious looting of some great memory box material. I will have quite a bit of it available at the meeting. I hope you will take some of it and bring it back as memory boxes in July. The kids paint the boxes and use them to store their cards and hospital-stay souvenirs. 2004 Woodworking Books

The following woodworking books are just some of those purchased last year by the San Diego Library with

funds provided by the San Diego Fine Woodworkers Association, matched with funds from the City of San Diego. The Association has presented the library with a thousand dollar check each year since 1990. The city adds

an equal amount, half of which is combined with our donation for the purchase of woodworking books and videotapes we recommend. Inside each cover is a book plate acknowledging the Fine Woodworkers Association.

The other half of the City’s contribution is used by the library for other important programs. This arrangement adds at least fifty books every year, and has made the San Diego Library a major repository for woodworking books and tapes. Most books are shelved at the Downtown Library, but all can be ordered from any branch or online.
