April Program

Bob Stevenson Master Craftsman and Coordinator of the Design in Wood Exhibition

In preparation for the Design in Wood Exhibition, we will look at how to reproduce a masterpiece in furniture. Bob Stevenson will give a slide presentation on his work. The program will show in detail just how he built that beautiful game table which was on the backcover of the July/August 2001 Fine Woodworking Magazine issue #150. In addition to organizing our Design in Wood Exhibition, Bob runs his own business where he restores collectable furniture and builds custom furniture specializing in Federal Period recreations. To tie into this month's Lie-Nielson Tool sale, following the slide presentation Bob will discuss and demonstrate the selection, sharpening and use of a handplane.

From the President… .

Time is getting close for the Design In Wood show. We had a lot of volunteers already sign up at the March meeting. Positions are still open and we need your help. Building children’s chairs in the 19th Century cabinet shop is a great way to learn hand tool techniques, polish up on your hand tool skills or just hobnobbing with the crowds. We also need volunteers for the floor to watch over the exhibits. Floor duty can be rewarding answering the many questions about the pieces on display. And of course we always need your help for setup and tear down. We always seem to have fun and the time goes quickly. I would like to see more entries from the association this year and we have added a new category just for SDFWA members. Pick up an entry form from any of our local sponsors or at the April meeting.

Our meeting this month features Bob Stevenson. Bob builds American period reproductions using the same techniques as the master furniture makers of the 17th and 18th century. He even uses the same tools having inherited his great Uncle’s tools from the period. His work has been published in many magazines and articles and has been featured in Fine Woodworking magazine and last year appeared on the cover of Woodshop News. He will guide us through the construction of a federal game table that was featured on the back cover of the August 2001 issue of Fine Woodworking magazine.

As you will see elsewhere in the newsletter, we still need people to fill key positions in the organization. We are looking for someone to do publicity for the organization. We are also looking for a Video Library chairman. We would like to have someone to organize and run a mentoring program. Our organization is no different from any other nonprofit volunteer group. We are only able to do as much as we have volunteers to do the work. And with over 1600 members, there is a lot to do. We have a great group of people who are willing and able to help any new volunteer get started. So if you feel you can help, please contact me or any board member and we will be glad to put you to work.

This month Bill Collins has another great selection for the raffle. We are sponsoring another Lie Nielsen Tool sale. Remember to bring something for the brag table and get your raffle tickets early. See you at the meeting. Ed Gladney President

Mentor Program – Volunteer Needed We are in need of a person to manage the SDFWA Mentor Program. The Mentor Program Advocate would be responsible for providing structure to facilitate communication between persons seeking a mentor and members willing to volunteer to act as mentors. An understanding of woodworking in general as well as good management and communications skills would be helpful. Advanced woodworking skills are not needed. This is an opportunity to help manage an important service to the SDFWA membership and get to know and help other members. Once the structure is in place, I would estimate that it would take about 1 hour per week to maintain the program. If this sounds like something you would be interested in, please give me a call at 619-670-7107 or email [email protected] Bill Kohr, Vice President 4

DESIGN IN WOOD SAN DIEGO COUNTY FAIR (formerly the Del Mar Fair) We have four planning meetings under our belt and plans are being made to have another great exhibition this year - the 21st annual Design in Wood Exhibition. Entries are already coming in. It is time you were starting the finishing touches on your entry. This year we will be giving away over $18,000 in prize money and merchandize. Remember, entries close on April 26, 2002 at 5:00pm. However, you have until June 2 to complete and deliver your piece. It is necessary to submit photographs of your entries with the form and the fees by April 26. SET UP AND TAKE DOWN As usual, we will need help with set up and take down of the Exhibit. Neither of these events requires a signup - just show up at the right time and place. The set up party is on Sunday and Monday (Holiday), May 26 and 27, in the north end of Mission Tower Building. Bring yourself, and if you have it, a battery operated screw gun for Phillips Head screws. Be sure to put your name clearly and permanently on any tools you bring. Ladders and other tools are helpful. We start at 9:00am. Remember that it is Memorial Day Holiday weekend, so you have permission to come join the party. Video Library From 2 November 2001 to 3 April 2002, 120 videotapes have been borrowed by members. Our collection numbers 115 tapes, for many of which we have duplicate copies. If there are any additions to our collection, it will be published in the library list on our website and in the next inclusion in the newsletter (only twice a year). I took over the job as an interim assignment, pending the appointment of a more permanent librarian. My duties as Membership Chairman take a lot of time. The dual job is interfering with my time for woodworking. If you are interested in serving as Video Librarian, contact me to learn more about the job. The pay: you can review all the videos for free! You can operate from your home. Access to the Internet for E-mail is rather important for contact with any borrower whose telephone is a toll call from you. We have a videocassette cabinet to house the majority of our tapes and a rack for some of the remainder.

SDFWA Hand Tool Group Purchase 2002 * * * April 24th Meeting * * * Many of us start out woodworking with the idea that anything that needs to be done can be accomplished with a power tool. As we become more experienced and take on projects requiring complicated joinery and work with quality hardwoods, we begin to realize that hand tools play an important role in producing a finely crafted piece. It also becomes apparent that there is a huge difference between quality hand tools and the offerings normally found in the large chain stores. Tools offered by the manufacturers for our group purchase are of the highest quality – In the words of Thomas Lie-Nielsen “Heirloom quality tools” and most importantly, tools that work well right out of the box. We will have many of these tools available for you to examine at the April 24th meeting as well as some demonstration tools to try out.

About the manufacturers & tools

Again this year we have offerings from the ever-popular Lie-Nielsen Toolworks of Warren, Maine. They manufacture a wide selection of the highest quality planes and are now also producing superb handsaws. Tools - Lie-Nielsen Toolworks makes the best quality metal planes available today. Machining is very precise, quality is consistently high, and they are backed by a manufacturer’s lifetime warranty. These tools are made to be used and you will find when you own one that you will be drawn to using it often because it performs so well.

H.N.T. Gordon is a small family owned business in Australia that produces beautiful hand-made woodworking planes of exotic hardwoods such as Ironwood, Ebony, and Gidgee, which is a very hard and heavy member of the acacia family native to Australia. Tools - Terry Gordon of H.N.T. Gordon takes a somewhat different approach with hhand-made planes. He strives to achieve the highest performance cutting hardwoods and difficult grain by using a higher blade pitch (angle) which helps to prevent tearout. Blades can also be mounted in the plane “upside down” presenting a 90-degree angle to the surface of the wood, which turns them into a scraper, wis capable of dealing with ”cranky” grain situations. Terry selects tough exotic woods for plane bodies that are beautiful and also have less friction (than metal) when

planing. His planes are reasonably priced and due to the current weakness of the Australian dollar, they are now a bargain!

hich

Glen-Drake Toolworks is also a small family business located in the well-known Mendicino county woodworking enclave that is home of The College of The Redwoods. They manufacture the Tite-Mark marking gauge. This is an incredibly fine quality tool – You won’t want to set it down! Tools - Kevin Glen-Drake of Glen-Drake Toolworks produces what is by far tbest wheel type marking gauge available anywhere. This is the only tool that Lie-Nielsen Toolworks markets that they do not manufacture themselves – which speaks volumes about the quality. They are also working on some innovative veneer scoring and mortise blades. Kevin plans to be present at the meeting to demonstrate the Tite-Mark and chat with members.

About the sale Sale is open to SDFWA members only. Orders must be prepaid and can be made in the following ways.

6

Ordering 1. You may mail in the Order Form along with your check made payable to Craftsman Studio. Orders must be

postmarked by April 24th. 2. You may purchase tools at the April 24th meeting using the Order Form and pay either by cash or check made

payable to Craftsman Studio. We will not be able to accept credit cards at the meeting. 3. You may order online at www.craftsmanstudio.com/sdfwa.htm using your Visa or MasterCard. This is a secure

128 bit encrypted ordering site – you do not need to be concerned about the security of your credit card information. You can place your order anytime before the cutoff of 12PM (noon) PST on 25 April.

Once all orders have been received, we will place a single group order with each of the three manufacturers. Delivery Schedule 1. Lie-Nielsen Toolworks products – We hope to have received the majority of the Lie-Nielsen items by the May 22nd

meeting and will have them available to pick up at the meeting. 2. Glen-Drake Toolworks products - We hope to have received all of the Glen-Drake Toolworks items by the May

22nd meeting and will have them available to pick up at the meeting. 3. H.N.T. Gordon products – Air mail delivery from Australia takes about three weeks and since each of these planes

are hand-made it will take a little longer to produce the planes for the order. Our best estimate is that we will have the planes six weeks (mid-June) from the order date. See delivery options below.

Delivery Options If you do not specify, we will bring everything available to the May 22nd meeting – items received after the meeting will be made available at the Craftsman Studio store (See new location in this newsletter) for pickup. You will be notified when your order is in by email, or if none is listed, by telephone. 1. You may pick up your order at the May 22nd meeting for Lie-Nielsen and Glen-Drake items for no shipping cost. 2. For a flat $10 fee we will ship your order to you as soon as it arrives - no matter which manufacturer or how many

items you purchased - This is the fastest way. 3. If you provide an email address or phone number we will notify you so you can pick up your order at the new

Craftsman Studio store in the Adams Avenue “Antique Row” of University Heights. 4. If you specifically request it, we will bring your items to the July 31st meeting. New User Recommendations I am often asked for my recommendation regarding plane selections for new users that perhaps do not have a great deal of experience with hand tools but would like something practical, and not too difficult to master. Here are my new user picks in no particular order of preference: Lie-Nielsen LN-102 Low Angle Block Plane $80.75 – A small comfortable to use plane that performs extremely well and will soon become your method of choice for rounding edges and all of the little jobs around the shop. Lie-Nielsen LN-62 Low angle Jack Plane $191.25 – Probably the most versatile and user friendly plane ever made – This plane will perform flattening and smoothing duties on soft and hard wood, is often better than a standard bench plane for difficult grain and is far easier to adjust and sharpen. H.N.T. Gordon Smoothing Plane $114.75 – This is unquestionably the best value for a true smoothing plane on the market. Patterned after the Chinese style planes in use in Malaysia, these planes can be pushed or pulled & used with or without the handle. For greatest flexibility add the HSS Blade $36.47 so you can use it as a scraping plane as well H.N.T. Gordon Shoulder Plane $77-$82 – These are a necessity to anyone making mortise and tenon joints. Also handy for adjusting rabbets that turned out a little shallow. You won’t find a comparable quality plane anywhere near this price – Why you could splurge and get it in Ebony at these prices! H.N.T. Gordon Adjusting Mallet $17 – If you anticipate getting any of the H.N.T. Gordon planes or have your own wood planes, this is a must have. In Terry’s words “it is purpose-made for adjusting planes” and it works exceedingly well. Additional resources If you have web access, there is a color catalog of the H.N.T. Gordon planes, links to manufacturer sites and a downloadable order form at www.craftsmanstudio.com/sdfwa.htm Sale questions For questions about the tools, how the sale works or delivery options, contact Bill Kohr at 619-670-7107 or e-mail [email protected].
