An abstract of the paper


Astrology and later astronomy has had a profound influence over the past few millennia on both eastern and western cultures. It was believed that heavenly bodies had a direct or indirect influence upon people, their lives from birth to death and even beyond. Both uneducated and educated people were keen to know their future in all dimensions such as way of life, achievements, economic conditions, health, long life, love- marriage- off springs, calamity etc., and hence they resorted to this branch of learning, irrespective of criticism from rationalists, non- believers, intellectuals and the like.

Indian traditional astronomers such as Bhrugu, Pundit Dhundi Raja, Varahamihira in their astronomical treatises and compilations (samhitas) have spoken extensively about the effects of samvatsaras (one full year) on individuals and the world at large. Samvatsara is a time in which planet Jupiter (Guru griha) crosses the sign of one zodiacal sign(rashi) with his average speed and will be nearest or farthest to the Earth and is in touch with auspicious or inauspicious rays. It takes sixty years for Jupiter and Saturn (Shani) to reach the zero degree of the Aries (Mesha) sign. Various angels found between Jupiter and Saturn has their influence on samvatsaras.

The traditional astrologers say that a person born in each samvatsara, month (masa), fortnight (paksha), lunar day (tithi) and day (dina) has different personality traits compared to other members of the same family. The modern psychologists such as Meyer Friedman and R. H. Rosenman (1950) have come out with four types of personality such as A, B, C, and D and a combination of A-B, C-D etc., These personality types exhibit same type of behavioral patterns worldwide and have striking similarities with the people born in different samvatsaras.

In this paper, I propose to enlist the characteristics of different samvatsaras (from Prabhavato Krodhana), the behavior of people born in such samvatsaras and compare them with the modern personality types. A set of horoscopes would be analyzed as a part of this study.

It is hoped that such an inter-disciplinary study covering the Indian knowledge system with the modern knowledge system would reveal the ancient Indian wisdom in a new perspective for the benefit of mankind.

8. Bhāva- Has splendid or magnificent mind, very famous, munificent, courteous, happy, loved by all.

9. Yuva- Direct incarnation of happiness, has good qualities, courteous, peaceful, generous, full of erudition or learning, long-lived, has robust body, contented.

10. Dhātri- Has good qualities, beautiful, devoted to teacher, skilled, courteous and good-mannered.

11. Bahudhanya- Wise in trade, respected, charitable, suffers from pride, scholarly and wealthy.

12. Ishwara- Short tempered, full of joy, has good qualities, valorous, skillful, sagacious, skilled in fine arts and courteous.

13. Pramāthi- Owner of chariots, flag, umbrella, horses, study treatises, enemy-killer, minister of kings, has knowledge of ancient texts.

14. Vikrama- Engaged in doing extremely terrible or fierce deeds, skilled in attacking enemy’s army, warrior, has patience and endurance, extremely generous, valorous and powerful.

15. Vrisha- Praises work done by his own self, blameworthy, has company of vicious people, helps others, has many wives, dirty, lazy and greedy.

16. Chitrabhānu- Fond of various kinds of clothes and flowers, ambitious, good natured and endowed with crafts or arts.

17. Svarbhānu- Possess curly hair, simple nature, beautiful, conqueror of enemies, wise, courteous, smiling, endowed with splendor or magnificence.

18. Tārana- Cunning, heroic, restless, extremely harsh, cruel, engages in wicked acts, consumer and is endowed with wealth.

hesitant in asking for debts, always remains in debt, restless, has a tendency of spending much.

21. Sarvajit - Honored by the king, pure, has a huge body, conqueror of the king as well as his enemies.

22. Sarvadhāri - Master of a retinue of servants, enjoys pleasures, endowed with beauty, like sweets, has patience and endurance and obeys traditions and conventions.

23. Virodhi (2009-2010)- Eloquent speaker, wanders in foreign lands, rarely give joy and happiness to his own people , extremely deceitful, enmity with people.

24. Vikrita- Subjected to poverty, horrible looking, has tall body, is given to pride and is lacking in wisdom and intelligence, less friends.

25. Khara- Lustful, dirty in his body, speaker of very harsh and loud words without any reason or purpose, quarreling, shameless and possesses a huge body.

26. Nandana- Interested in donating grains as alms, has pure heart and remains happy with good wife and children.

27. Vijaya- Brave, has good conduct, honored by kings, an excellent speaker, bountiful, kind hearted and enemy killer.

28. Jaya- Organizer of philosophical deliberations, honored in the world, bountiful and generous, destroyer of enemies, longing desire of getting victory, engrossed in worldly or sensual enjoyment, very resplendent.

29. Manmatha- Adorned with ornament of special kind, sensuous, sweet-spoken, always remains engaged in singing and dancing and is voluptuous.



30. Durmukhi- Cruel, untrustaworthy, endowed with reprehensible or blameworthy mentality, avaricious, has curved mouth, curved hands and feet, remains engrossed in sins, is extremely villainous and wicked.

31. Hevilambi- Endowed with horses of high speed and four wheeled, gold, clothes, wealth and grains and gems, happy.

32. Vilambi- Deceitful, extremely greedy, lazy, phlegmatic, weak, fatalist and has the habit of speaking without purpose, serviceable, defeated by his wife, contented, keeps his thoughts secret, restless in nature.

33. Vikāri- Stubborn, skilled in arts, restless, cunning, extrovert and insecure.34. Shārvari- Skilled in trade activities, sensual, unfriendly, engaged in acquiring

knowledge.35. Plava- Extremely voluptuous, wealthy, gets respect, defeated by his wife,

contented, keeps his thoughts secret, restless nature.



36. Shubhakrut- Endowed with good fortune, learning, courtesy or humility and excellent virtuous deeds, long-lived and has many sons and much wealth and property.

37. Shobhakrut- Makes progress in every field, handsome looking, has excellent virtues, kind-hearted, skilful, doer of good deeds, successful, .brilliant, courteous, has beautiful eyes.

38. Krodhi- Cruel-eyed, cruel natured, has great love for his wife, extremely haughty or proud, puts obstacles for others, and prone to anger.

39. Vishvāvasu- Blessed with virtuous wife and son, excessively generous, has excellent conduct, excessive patience and endurance, likes sweet foods and endowed with all the virtues.

40. Parābhava- Can hardly make accumulation of wealth, speaker of bitter or harsh words, devoid of good conduct and is stupid.



41. Plavanga- Volatile or of restless mind, does not have a desire to do good deeds, deceitful, devoid of good conduct, thoughtless and has weak body.

42. Kīlaka- Average handsomeness, sweet-spoken, kind hearted, has love for water, has very fat legs, beautiful forehead, strong and destroyer of his enemies.

43. Saumya- Destined to be a scholar, wealthy, very sensual, has love for his deity, guest, pure, endowed with noble habits, has weak body, reputation through the medium of trade.

44. Sādhārana- Loves travelling, talented in writing, has discrimination, given to anger, pure and detached.

45. Virodhikrut- Remains engrossed in the worship of Lord Shiva, angry nature, quarrelsome, neglects his father.

46. Paridhāvi- Learned, courteous, adroit in the field of arts, wise, honored in king’s court.



47. Pramādicha- Villainous or wicked, proud, quarrelsome, avaricious or greedy, has great love for his own men, destined to be poor, dumb and doer of deeds which are apprehensible or blame worthy.

48. Ānanda- Skilful, excessively adroit, endowed with happiness, have sons, learned, has sense of gratitude or thankfulness, courteous and liberal.

49. Rākshasa- Extremely cruel, performer of reprehensible deeds, quarrelsome, devoid of religion and thoughtfulness, cruel and courageous.

50. Anala- Gifted with good sense, expert in the trade of things produced in water, good character, a little wealthy, restless, and supporter of many.

51. Pingala- Performer of reprehensible deeds, fierce nature, restless, has grandeur, beneficent, stupid and harsh speaking, remains happy, gets fame in the battle, handsome, minister of Kings, honored by many and capable or competent.



52. Kālayukti- Derives pleasure from speaking too much without any purpose, endowed with blamed (base) intellect, devoid of fortune, Yama (the god of Death) incarnate when a quarrel arises and is weak bodied.

53. Siddhārthi- Generous, remains happy, gets fame in the battle, handsome, minister of kings, honored by many.

54. Raudra- Has bad appearance, rears cattle, speaks ill of others, excessively deceitful, gets a bad name, vicious heart and very fierce.

55. Durmati- Pride of keeping his words, remains constantly unhappy, sensuous, engaged in doing base deeds and foolish.

56. Dundubhi- Recipient of honors from kings, endowed with elephant, horse, lands and gold, lover of dance and songs.

57. Rudhirodgāri- Red eyed, weak-bodied, excessively hot-tempered or, has bad nails on his hands and feet and gets wounded by some weapon.



58. Raktākshi- Engages in righteous and religious conducts, extremely lustful, does not tolerate the growth of others.

59. Krodhana- puts obstacles in the work of others, dominated in temperament by the quality of the three cardinal elements in man’s nature, fierce or terrible and puts others in delusion.

60. Akshaya- Spends the wealth earned by him very quickly, has the tendency of serving others, hard hearted and does not have much desire to do good deeds.



• Cardiologist Meyer Friedman & R. H. Rosenman described Personality Types A & B after a nine year study of 9000 healthy people (35-59 years).

• They opined that Type ‘A’ behaviour doubles the risk of coronary heart disease.

Conclusions

An analysis of 55 horoscopes belonging to different Samavatsaras and different days denote the following: Generally people born on Sundays have dynamic/aggressive nature and are extroverts (TYPE –A )

Generally people born on Mondays have suffered from respiratory diseases (TYPE – C).

People born on Wednesdays are sharp, intelligent, clever, intellectuals (TYPE B).

People born on Thursdays are leaders in respective professions (TYPE A).

People born on Fridays have excelled in fine arts, secretive in nature and engage in gallant actions (combination of A- B).

People born on Saturdays are lazy in learning and work, introverts (TYPE –C and D).
