Emory University - Georgia Tech Research Collaboration

Evidenced-based design in critical care research.(GA Tech Institutional Funding). Projects evaluate the role of an evidenced based Patient-Family Centered Care neurocritical units impact on 1) Patients, Family, and Staff Satisfaction, 2) Clinical Outcomes, 3) Resource utilization, 4) Quality outcomes.

Emory-GA Tech IRB

1.   Principal Investigators: Owen Samuels, MD(Emory), Craig Zimring, PhD(GA Tech) Emory Critical Care Unit Acoustic Environment Study: (6/2008 to present)

Study Focuses on nurses and staff ability to hear key sounds in critical care settings that are believed to be impacted by the acoustical design of the physical environment. Study explores: a.   What key sounds nurse’s need to hear and understand to do their job effectively,

b.   How the design of the physical setting layout can play a role to enhance the nurse’s ability to hear and understand key alarm and non-alarm sounds.

2.   Principal Investigator: Owen Samuels, MD (Emory), Craig Zimring, PhD(GA Tech) Emory Family Presence in Patient Care Study: (10/2011to present)

Study explores the utilization of family spaces in a Patient-Family Centered (PFCC) critical care unit design, with comparison and analysis to conventionally designed ICUs at Emory University Hospital, using behavior-mapping methodology.

3.   Principal Investigator: Owen Samuels, MD (Emory), Craig Zimring, PhD (GA Tech)

Emory ICU Work Environment Study: (2/2011 to present)

Examines the influence of elements of the environment on staff stress. Study compares two similar size and acuity critical care units at Emory, one conventional in design, the other based on evidenced based design principles.

4.   Principal Investigator: Owen Samuels, MD(Emory), Michelle Ossmann, Craig Zimring, PhD(GA Tech) Emory ICU Unit Design and Time Use Study: (2/2011 to present)

Examines staff utilization of various locations throughout an evidenced based design ICU. Examines nursing and staff behaviors in patient rooms, adjacent alcoves, and common staff areas. Multiple variables examined such as line of sight to patient rooms, walking distances, frequency of trips for patient related issues such as supplies, medications, and overall utilization of space. Reviews spatial relationships of room locations with patient morbidity and mortality (Data collection completed, analysis and manuscript in process).

5.   Owen Samuels, MD(Emory), Craig Zimring, PhD(GA Tech)

Exploring Patient and Family-Centered Care from the Nurse and Physician Perspective: Nurse-Family Interactions, Stress and the Built Environment: (9/2007 to 2011) The purpose of this study is to gain greater insight into the nature of physician and nurse-family interactions in Emory’s Neuro ICU and the delicate balance treating staff must maintain between taking care of patients, families and themselves. Owen Samuels, MD (Emory), Bo Hyun (GA-Tech), Craig Zimring, PhD (GA-Tech) Task Interruptions and the Physical Environment in Healthcare: (9/2007 to 2010) Study examines the frequency of interruptions of nurses workflow during medication administration. The study aims to determine measures of ICU design layout that predict interruptions in medication preparation. The project will determine elements of ICU layout that predict these interruptions that may directly impact on safety and quality of patient care.
