John 12:20-33

Continue…

Now among those who went up to worship at the festival were some Greeks. They came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, and said to him, "Sir, we wish to see Jesus." Philip went and told Andrew; then Andrew and Philip went and told Jesus.

Jesus answered them, "The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. Very truly, I tell you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains just a single grain; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. Those who love their life lose it, and those who hate their life in this world will keep it for eternal life. Whoever serves me must follow me, and where I am, there will my servant be also. Whoever serves me, the Father will honor.

Before we can begin to analyze a textwe first become familiar with the text

John 12:20-33 - continued

"Now my soul is troubled. And what should I say-- `Father, save me from this hour'? No, it is for this reason that I have come to this hour. Father, glorify your name."

Then a voice came from heaven, "I have glorified it, and I will glorify it again."

The crowd standing there heard it and said that it was thunder. Others said, "An angel has spoken to him."

Jesus answered, "This voice has come for your sake, not for mine. Now is the judgment of this world; now the ruler of this world will be driven out. And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself." He said this to indicate the kind of death he was to die.

Greeks? or Greek-speaking Jews?

Therefore the people, who were with Him when He called Lazarus out of his tomb and raised him from the dead, bore witness. For this reason the people also met Him, because they heard that He had done this sign.

The Pharisees therefore said among themselves, “You see that you are accomplishing nothing. Look, the world has gone after Him!” -- John 12.17

Why would Philip have a Greek name?Might it have to do with his home community?

Is there any relationship between his name, his community, and his profession, that might lead Greeks to him?

Is it possible they knew him or know of him?

John puts the cleansing of the temple in chapter 2 because his Gospel is a theological claim

rather than a chronological account.

Is there any historic relationship between Jn 12.20 and the Messianic entry?

Is there any historic relationship between Jn 12.20and the cleansing of the temple?

That isn’t John’s story… but does that help you understand the back-story in John’s story?

The following day Jesus wanted to go to Galilee, and He found Philip and said to him, “Follow Me.” Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter. Philip found Nathanael and said to him, “We have found Him of whom Moses in the law, and also the prophets, wrote—Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.” - John 1.43ff

The GuildWhen they had done so, they caught such a large number of fish that their nets began to break. So they signaled their partners in the other boat to come and help them, and they came and filled both boats so full that they began to sink. - Luke 5.6ff

John 2.4 Jesus said to her, “Woman, what does your concern have to do with Me? My hour has not yet come.”

John 4.21 Jesus said to her, “Woman, believe Me, the hour is coming when you will neither on this mountain, nor in Jerusalem, worship the Father. You worship what you do not know; we know what we worship, for salvation is of the Jews. But the hour is coming….”

John 7.30 Therefore they sought to take Him; but no one laid a hand on Him, because His hour had not yet come.

John 8.20 These words Jesus spoke in the treasury, as He taught in the temple; and no one laid hands on Him, for His hour had not yet come.

What’s changed???? Why does Jesus suddenly say,

THE HOUR HAS COME??

If the Greeks are coming to Jesus… then the hour has come to draw all people… by being lifted up.

He said this to indicate the kind of death he was to die.

For John, would “kind of death” refer to cause or effect?

The crowd standing there heard it and said that it was thunder. Others said, "An angel has spoken to him."

Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the desert, so the Son of Man must be lifted up, that everyone who believes in him

may have eternal life -- John 3.14-15

So Moses made a bronze snake and put it up on a pole. Then when anyone was bitten by a

snake and looked at the bronze snake, he lived. – Numbers 21.9

The Collect

Almighty God, you alone can bring into order the unruly wills and affections of sinners: Grant your people grace to love what you command and desire what you promise; that, among the swift and varied changes of the world, our hearts may surely there be fixed where true joys are to be found; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
