Being The Boss (That No One Hates)

WUZUP editor-in-chief Mr. Smoove Campbell says

“Knowing people’s strengthe is very important. If a person’s not happy or giving their all, they might not tell you. You have to be able to decipher that yourself and have a willingness to make changes or say, ‘I’m sorry. You’re the best we’ve got. Please do a better job.’ And don’t loose control of your emotions. Be a person first. You can always get more of the people who work with you, but at what cost? Someone could quit or do poor work later because you fought about somthing.. And don’t act like other people’s opinions don’t matter , but also remember that you have to make the final decisions.”

ESCAPE FROM A NIGHTMARE

STEPHANIE ‘NINA’ ACON

THE BIO OF BREAK-OUT AUTHOR STEPHANIE ‘NINA’ ACON

FROM HIP-HOP TOAUTHORSHIP...

Stephanie Acon has been writing edgy fiction tales and poetry since the age of ten years old. However, it wasn’t until the age of 21, when she found Hip-Hop, (or Hip-Hop found her) that subsequently she became known to the underground Hip-Hop world as NinaRaw. For ten years consistent, she rocked with force, and played a vital part on the side of Systematic Muzick Inc. (‘The OESC’ and ‘The Murc Unit’). Inthe mist of performing, writing, rhyming, recording, selling and shopping mix-tapes...amongst the community, somewhere, NinaRaw becamehailed and dubbed as the “queen”. And not by way of cliché props, but strictly be-cause those saying the title “queen” meant it when they said it, and said it when they felt it necessary. By proof, NinaRaw was never just a rapper. She was the female emcee who crafted lyrics with messages that ran deep into memories. To those who heard for themselves, her wordplay was unforgettable, and to the “underground” she set the bar, for not only-female rappers, but lyricists period. Every rhyme written heeded life, and she packed them with something so intense it could only be categorized as royal. What drove the energy level up so high was simple, and com-plex, wrapped all in one explanation - her goal. Stephanie’s point to it all. The method behind her voice, and presence, was meant to be a lit candle

inspirations have been drawn from the many experiences she has endured, observed, and inhabited in the streets of St. Louis. One of Stephanie’s most compelling in-spirations came from the life-alter-ing tutelage that she received from her most profound mentor, GOD- and of course her crew. Systematic Muzick Inc. includes KD Assanin,

boisterous style of rap music, and become the light that she is destined to be, by any means necessary. If Hip-Hop wouldn’t allow the jewel inside to shine, then a higher power would. This is when life came full circle, and NinaRaw came back to herself.

Meet Stephanie “Nina” Acon. She is now an author... ‘ESCAPE FROM A NIGHTMARE’ is her first urban fiction novel. Her

amongst a lost generation. Her gen-eration. Knowing that their influen-tial genre of music could sometimes get so dark that listeners slumbered, she wanted to AWAKE them. And Hip-Hop became a way...a tool. Although, never commercially ac-claimed, NinaRaw embarked on the mission of a lifetime. All by way of Hip-Hop! But then, after serving the culture for years, somewhere, over the last two, the course began to curve. Or change.

Fate was evolving.

The mysterious element that made NinaRaw unique was something far above rapping rhyming lyrics. It was more than that. It was rare, rawness, and it needed to crossover. Too bad, NinaRaw couldn’t and wouldn’t cross over. From the start, she was the exception, breaking the rule. Crossing over was not an option. Not in regards to Hip- Hop. Making commercialized music was not in the design, so NinaRaw stepped back. Something needed to be reconsidered. This female was more than just a limited rap song, or an image to be drawn up by A&Rs of a controlled system, or industry. Even more than the writer she will always be, “she” is a purpose. A purpose that had to transcend, and transform all levels in order to be fulfilled, and make herself known abroad - without compromising; a reason to humble down from the

Stephen “Instrumental” King, 923, Lo Lansky, Los, and Jason Seals. ALL FAM! Because Stephanie is a St. Louis native, and a local hip-hop artist, first-hand knowledge of the industry and the people in it has been gained by being directly on the scene. Ultimately, her goals are to author and publish a series of books under her own brand, logo, and collection ‘BGC’...or ‘Black Girl Crossed’. The intro-duction series to arise from this collection is the debut Urban Fiction novel, ‘ESCAPE FROM A NIGHTMARE’ which is pub-lished under Priority Books, has just been released nation-wide Fall (2011), and is now avail-able everywhere, from Amazon, to Barnes and Noble. ESCAPE FROM A NIGHTMARE is a contemporary urban fiction created with a unique blend of love, Hip-Hop, and wouldn’t you know it...FATE. This story is full with twist-and-turns, and displays a generational authen-ticity appeal that will definitely captivate it’s targeted demo-graphic of young-adult, adult, inspirational, hip-hop, and pop audience line. For Stephanie ‘Nina’ Acon...her book, and writings is what music wasn’t...and that’s compromise free. Ya Dig!

(Have you ever experienced a

premonition that you just couldn’t shake? A foreboding dream or sign that you deeply wanted to ignore but...your spirit just wouldn’t release it).?

By Teresa Has Arrived

“Then why can’t I stay with you both out there?”

Don’t worry somehow I will fix it...

I know I can make him care.

“What if you can’t?”

Don’t doubt his heart

Often it’s true and fair.

“You won’t let him hurt me?”

Don’t be silly, if he hurts you....

then he would have to hurt me.

“You don’t think he would?”

Of course not. For I am the sun...

and he is the sea.

I give him strength and light

and for that - he loves me.

“Do you think he will love me too?”

Are you kidding?

You’re half of him and half of me!

You’d be the center of his world

a little girl with bouncy curls

around your finger you’ll have him twirled.

“I hope he likes me.”

Child he’s gonna love you!

Now little one, I have a question for ya...

What do u think of the name ....

OLIVIA.....

“Don’t let them get me...”

it whispers in my ears.

“Don’t let them hurt me...”

I can hear it’s fear.

This voice just keeps on talking

But there isn’t anyone near.

“Why doesn’t he want me.:”..

He does baby, he does.

“But he SAID he doesn’t want me...”

But that’s just cause he’s scared.

“He doesn’t want either one of us...”

Yes he does, he has to care.

“But I heard him so distinctly.

I’d know my daddys voice anywhere....”

Did you know you were conceived in love?

New Rules For The Music Industry

FOR THE MUSIC INDUSTRY:

1) BE TRANSPARENT ñ No more hiding behind complex royalty calculations. Man up. Be honest. Provide clear and accurate accounting. The digital world makes it easier than ever to do this.

This applies to labels, distributors, ASCAP, BMI, SESAC and anyone else you can think of. They can all be transparent if they choose to be. Right now they choose not to be.

2) PAY ON TIME! ñ No more artificial royalty accounting periods. Returns and co-ops are a thing of the past. Pay out and account on one way no return sales that you have been paid in the same month you get them.

The only reason to hold on to the money is to make bank interest on it. If this is what you are going to do, see #1, BE TRANSPARENT and tell artists you are doing this.

3) NO MORE SUGARCOATING AND HIDING REALITY ñ Seriously. Stop promising things you know you canít deliver. Not everyone is going to be a star. Be honest, tell the truth,. Let the musician and artist know the realities of the market so they can have a better understand of what needs to be done to succeed or why things are not going the way they want them to.

4) ACKNOWLEDGE YOU WORK FOR THE ARTIST, NOT THE OTHER WAY AROUND ñ Without the artist none of us will have jobs. They are the ones with the talent. They create culture and write songs that have an impact on the world. They are allowing us to serve them, not the other way around. This philosophy and culture must permeate everything you do. Turn this industry from one that ìexploitsî the artist to one that serves the artist.

everything you do. Turn this industry from one that ìexploitsî the artist to one that serves the artist.

5) ONLY OFFER SERVICES YOU CAN ACTUALLY DO ñ No more asking for rights or income from things you canít contribute towards. If you are a label and want more money from other areas (i.e. merchandise, songwriter income, gig income etc) you actually have to provide a service that does something to earn that right. There are others out there that are specialists in these areas, can you do what they can?

6) UNDERSTAND THE ARTIST NOW HAS CHOICE ñ Unlike the old days, artists can now succeed without you. Labels have gone from a ìmust haveî to a ìmight needî. Be clear in what you have to offer and create a fair and equitable deal in exchange for the services you are offering.

7) COMMERCIAL RADIO AND MTV NO LONGER SINGULARLY BREAK BANDS ñ It used to be that print, commercial radio and MTV were the three ways to break a band, no longer. Fans themselves have this power via social networking. Find ways to speak to fans directly and donít use a middleman. Empower and excite them and they will follow.

FOR THE ARTIST1) STOP ASKING FOR BIG ADVANCES ñ Understand that the economics of the business have changed for both the artists and the labels. The goal for artists and labels must be the same: create sustainable working relationships for both parties. Disproportionate advances only add tension (economic and otherwise) to an already tense dynamic. Create financial working relationships based on realistic expectations of ROI.

2) EDUCATE YOURSELF ñ Itís no longer acceptable (or charming) to be the un-informed artist who doesnít know the difference between a mechanical royalty and a mechanic. You canít claim that youíve been taken advantage of by anyone at this point; the information you need is out there, and itís not that hard to find. Learn it, once you have this knowledge you can then make informed decisions and decide if the other entity is doing its job. Not to mention, the labels etc already know this info and so should you.

3) TAKE RESPONSIBILITY ñ Stating that there is any person or

,î or, ìIf only people could hear my music they would love it.î The gatekeepers have vanished; the gates are openÖgo through them.

4) TAKE ACTION ñ Waiting for a booking agent before you tour? Waiting for a producer before you make a recording? Waiting for a label before you distribute or promote your music? Guess what, someone else isnít waiting for anyone, and he or she is leaving you in the dust. The worst thing you can do is nothing.

5) SELL ñ Get over the fact that youíre the artist, and asking people for money in exchange for your art is awkward. The reality is that if your work is good, people will want to compensate you for it. You must not only give them the opportunity to do so, but make it easy for them. Be clear and transparent, and tell your customers that your music is valuable, and that if they want to ensure that you are able to keep creating the music that they enjoy, that they must pay for it. Then give them a wide variety of things to buy at different prices.

6) GIVE WITHOUT ASKING FOR ANYTHING IN RETURN ñ Itís not all selling, of course, and we are all in this together. Look for ways to help other artists. Share information, share resources. This is not a zero-sum game; the overall pie can expand, and we will all benefit proportionately when it does.

7) DEMAND ANSWERS ñ if you donít understand something, ask. If the person you ask canít give you a clear, understandable answer then he or she is either clueless or trying to hide something. Demand a clear, understandable answer or walk away from the deal.

DONíT EXPECT SOMETHING FOR NOTHING

Itís going to take work to make things happen. Either you need to do the work or you must hire someone else to do part, or all of it, for you. If you understand your rights, how money is made, and how much you should make, you can make educated decisions.

8) DEFINE YOUR GOALS ñ Know what it is you are tying to accomplish. Are you looking to be the next Vanilla Ice or just sell some music without touring? Is your goal corporate sponsorships or having others cover your songs? Whatever it may be, have a goal in mind and then work towards accomplishing that objective. With that one conquered, you can move on to the next.

DON’T EXPECT SOMETHING FOR NOTHING!

Confused, heart-aching, and searching for him in the daylight with a flashlight; this is how she left me, oh summer. While I was out here gettiní it in, I continued to put my heart on the line. This particu-lar situation refers to a long-time love interest. How long will he be a “love interest”? The madness has gone on for way too long; but itís just something about him that I choose not to shake. He’s fine! And Iím not the only one who believes so; just ask baby-mamas number one and two what they think. He ís so slick with it though. He defi-nitely has game. So where do I fit in with this one? Game over I say! How many times have I said that? It was good while it lasted. Get your minds out of the gutta! Not much to write home about on this one; I guess Iím just that easy. Who doesnít appreciate breakfast and a little gas money? Iím just sayin! He sure did breeze his way back out of town with minimal communication; itís been 30 days. WTF? Who does that?

Our friends and family will always tell us ìbaby itís okay, he or she just isnít the one for youî. This statement may definitely be true; but will they ever come out and say baby it’s not them, it’s you!? Wow! I mean for real; love is a two-way street. It takes two to tango; and all those other clichÈs youíd rather not hear while bashing your Ex or a date that went sour. Continuing to experience the same situations over and over with different people, calls for some serious inner-evaluation. Well, maybe it is me? It very well could be. This is not an excuse for accepting foolishness into your life, but more of a self-assessment as

to why you may be attracting foolishness. Some of us like foolish-

ness and crazy. Just go on and tell the truth! Without it, some of us would have nothing to talk about or in common with certain friends.

Ever notice how your friends who get married or into serious committed re-lationships tend to fall off from the group? They have to go hang with other couples and know the benefits of doing this. They may or may not know that their single friends, who may not be “in love” just don’t want to hear about the lovey dovey stuff. Misery loves company. What type of company do you keep? Whether we realize it or not, the people we choose to date or hang out with are reflections of who we are; or who we are at particular times in our lives. Iím not saying to go and end every relationship with people who you feel donít mirror the “ideal” you. Some of these people are our family members so itís not easy to cut them from your circle. Iím just saying, the next time you talk about a bad relationship or date, think about the role you played in the situation. Even with family members, as you evolve into the person you would like to become, some issues donít even need to be addressed. Sometimes, ì’t is what it isî. We cannot change others; only our actions and reactions to how others treat us.

So what’s in store for the fall dating season? I would surely like to know WU-ZUP!? Iím still thinking about my summer love, who is obviously MIA. May-be I’m just a fool for love or maybe Iím just a fool! You know if things would have gone differently, my summer boo would have become my fall boo; who ultimately becomes Winter/Holiday boo. I am booíed out! Before I go on a Cougar hunt or wild goose chase trying to stock up for the winter, Iím really going to sit down and re-evaluate what Iím looking for and what I want from a relationship.

CARDINALS VS TEXAS RANGERS

STL 2011

30 STL 2011WWW.WUZUP-STL.COM

After slugging their way through the first two rounds of the playoffs, it went down as the greatest come back in the history of baseball. The Cardinals over came a 10.5 deficit to win the wild card beating arguably the best team in all of baseball. With the best of 5 series in the play offs! To face the Texas Rangers. Both teams played their hearts out and scored allot of runs, while getting a lot of clutch hits.

But nobody predicted the Saint Louis native David Freese...! With a homerun

in the 11th inning to win game 6 and a 2 run double to tie game 7

Former Cardinal and Hitting Coach, Home Run Hall of Famer, Mark McGwire, 48, said before the series began..There is always room for fine-tuning with the mechanics. Thirteen different hitters, with 13 different plans. We all have good mechanics and know how to hit, thats the reason why they made it to the World Series and why they went home “2011 CHAMPIONS”..!
