Scope of inspection

At the request of Mr Sailor, Max Laver of Laver Marine Ltd. attended the vessel named “My Girl”,

a launch of glass on wood construction currently ashore at the Bridge Marina hardstand.

All care has been taken but no responsibility is accepted for latent or other defects.

The hull, decks and superstructure were subjected to close visual inspection and random

percussion soundings with a nylon hammer above the waterline and a 4oz metal hammer belowthe waterline. Moisture meter readings were taken on the hull and deck with a Tramex SkipperPlus moisture meter.

The interior structure of the vessel was inspected and subjected to percussion soundings andmoisture testing where relevant.

Areas that can not be accessed are not included in the scope of the inspection. These include,

but are not limited to, areas that are covered by linings furnishings, coatings or are otherwiseinaccessible.

Core materials of deck or hull, if any, were not sampled.

The installation and external condition of machinery, plumbing, electrical systems and equipmentwas visually inspected. No mechanical tests were performed on propulsion or auxiliarygenerating equipment. No compression tests were performed.

The inspection of flexible piping was limited to the condition of its external casing and only wherereadily accessible for visual inspection.

Batteries and their installation were visually inspected, but the batteries were not load tested.The external condition of electrical wiring, connections and system installation was inspected.

No evaluation was made of the vessel’s stability or other design aspects. If this report does not

discuss a specific item, equipment or machinery, it is not covered by this inspection.

This report is prepared for the exclusive use of the client whose name and address appear onPage 2 and is not transferable to any other person or entity.

While every effort has been made to conduct a thorough inspection, there can be no guaranteeor warranty, express or implied, as to the condition or suitability of the vessel and her equipment

or machinery.

The surveyor warrants that this report is a true and unbiased opinion of the vessel, based upon avisual inspection on the date of the inspection. The findings, opinions and conclusions are based

upon the best professional judgment of the surveyor.

Recommendations are a guide only and are not to be interpreted as sufficient instructions toinstruct a contractor to carry out repairs and /or modifications.

Summary

My Girl was inspected on the hard stand at Tauranga Bridge Marina by Max Laver of LaverMarine Ltd. on Sunday 9th October 2011. The vessel is a 36 foot Vindex wooden launch built and

launched in 1985.

The construction method is glass over double diagonal kauri planking with an internal structure of

solid wood frames and stringers.

My Girl was seen to be in very good overall condition and maintained to a high standard.

When sighted fore and aft the hull appeared symmetrical and fair with no hard spots or flat areasnoted.

The internal structure, (frames, floors, stringers and keelson) were seen to be free from defectwhere sighted. The planking was visible from the interior of the boat and was seen to be in goodcondition. Percussion tests of the hulls exterior suggest that the laminates remain well bonded.

No signs of damage or major repair work were apparent at the time of inspection.

Moisture meter readings were consistently low on the hull, decks and superstructure. Elevatedreadings were noted on the exterior surface of the transom; however, internal readings andpercussion testing suggest that there are no structural defects of current concern.

Percussion testing returned good solid reports in general on the hull, decks and superstructure.

The boats hull and deck retain a good paint finish with few scuffs and scratches. Some minorchipping was noted on the port side of the hull.

The 180 h/p ford diesel engine was reconditioned in 2004 and appears in excellent condition with

2341 recorded engine hours. (840 engine hours have been logged since the engine overhaul).New universal joints, prop shaft, shaft seals and gear box were installed March 2010.

The deck gear was seen to be in a serviceable condition and well bedded/installed to the deck.

The electrical systems (DC & AC) appear well installed with a current warrant of electrical fitness.

The interior appeared clean and dry. The three smaller forward windows of the forward cabinreportedly leak. They are scheduled to be replaced/re-bedded.

My Girl was clearly built to a high professional standard and remains in excellent overall

condition. She is well maintained and carries an extensive range of electronic navigation aidsand safety gear. I could find no obvious reason why My Girl should not continue to provide goodservice.

Notes and recommendations

Safety risk – Recommendation should be remedied before the vessel is re-launched. High priority – Recommendation should be addressed as soon as is reasonablypossible. Medium priority – Recommendation should be addressed within the next sixmonths. Low priority – Recommendation can be addressed at the owners’ discretion. Monitor – Check and keep record of.

Recommendations are listed in order of occurrence in the report.

#1 – Elevated moisture readings on transomHigh moisture meter readings on the transom exterior prompted furtherinvestigation. Readings were taken from the transom’s interior surface andpercussion test were conducted on both the exterior and interior surfaces. Solidreturns were noted from the percussion test with no soft spots or dull returns.

Moisture meter readings were in the low to medium range when read from theinterior surface.

The fiberglass sheathing appears to remain well bonded to the plywood structure ofthe transom.

This suggests the following two possibilities;1. The moisture meter may be picking up the metal steering system components

attached to the interior surface of the transom and providing ‘false highreadings’ when readings are taken from the exterior surface.

2. There are elevated levels of moisture in the outer laminates of the ply and glass

sheathing. Monitor

#2 – Loose stanchion post on starboard sideThere is little or no access to the backing plate of this stanchion post rendering itdifficult to secure. Recommend a tapped stainless steel plate be rebated into thedeck. The stanchion base could then be bolted into the tapped plate. Medium priority

#3 – Forward cabin windows

All windows in the main cabin are in good condition and show no signs of leaking.However, the three smaller windows in the forward face of the forward cabincurrently leak. They remain serviceable and are scheduled for replacement withinthe next two weeks. Medium priority

#4 - Galley sink seacockThe galley sink seacock is situated in such a way that it is vulnerable to damage(being stepped on) should someone be working in the engine compartment. It isrecommended that a protective plate be placed on the inboard and forward sides ofthis fitting. While this may seem a minor issue, it is included as a matter of prudenceas the seacock is below the waterline.

The purchase of a current flare kit and 406MHz EPIRB is recommended. High priority
