6 Introduction

IntroductionWelcome to Doomtown or Bust! the

official Deadlands sourcebook for thesetting of the Deadlands: Doomtowncollectible trading card game.Doomtown or Bust! provides roleplayingstatistics and background material forthe characters and situations in theCCG—allowing Marshals to runadventures, create characters, or evenbase an entire campaign within theenvirons of Gomorra, California. Asplayers of the card game know,Gomorra is a tiny little boomtown onthe edge of the Great Maze, burstingwith danger and intrigue as differentfactions try to gain control of itsresources.

Something a LittleDifferent

At the same time, however, there area few differences between this guideand other books like City o’ Gloom andThe Great Maze. They mostly have to dowith the differences betweenroleplaying games and card games, andbear mentioning here before we diveinto the meat of the material.

The Doomtown CCG was developedwith the intention of translating thefeeling and atmosphere of Deadlandsinto a new format—taking a roleplayinggame and moving into the form ofcollectible trading card games. In effect, the designers were striving to create a“Deadlands concentrate,” where all ofthe varied elements of the roleplayinggame would have an outlet in the cardgame. There would have to be madscientists present, for example, as wellas hucksters, monsters, harrowedgunslingers, Indians, Agency operatives,Texas Rangers—the list goes on and on.

It was quite a lot to squeeze into onelittle town. In order to make it workwithout being arbitrary or chaotic, there would have to be a reason for all

of those different people to be there. Itneeded a tightly woven plot that wouldnot only explain the presence of amultitude of factions and characters, but allow them to interact with eachother in an engaging and excitingmanner. It also meant that a lot ofimportant elements would be in closeproximity to each other and wouldchange radically—sometimesinexorably—in a very short period oftime.

So what does all of this have to dowith the sourcebook you now hold inyour hands? Well, while very necessaryto a functioning CCG, such a tightly-constructed story runs contrary to thetenets of roleplaying games. Inroleplaying, the players are expected tocreate their own characters—the heroesof the story—who respond to a freeflowing and improvisational plot. Theyact according to what is effective at themoment, possibly doing things that theplot’s controller, the Marshal, has noidea is coming. In so doing, they have agreat impact on how the story develops. That’s part of the appeal of roleplaying:the ability to make the story up as yougo along. The medium really couldn’texist without it.

As roleplaying products, mostDeadlands sourcebooks take this intoaccount. They present the reader withframeworks—settings and plotlines thatMarshals can hurl their posses into.

Welcome toGomorra

In Gomorra, however, things aresometimes a little different. The cardgame can’t make allowances forindividual players’ characters or leaveniggling openings in the storylinewithout disrupting the entire plot. InDeadlands: The Weird West, a gunslingerin, say, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, can be amajor player, but the same gunfightercan’t be placed in Doomtown with thesame effect.

So when the time came to convertthe characters and story of Gomorra,California, into roleplaying terms, theresulting setting is a bit more self-contained than your average WeirdWest location. There aren’t quite so

many obvious dangling plot threadshere—not as many places where a posseof unknown heroes can step in andmake sweeping changes. The heroesand villains of Gomorra are alreadypresent, their destinies are pretty clear.

Making a DifferenceThis is not to say that your posse

can’t have great adventures in Gomorra,or affect the storyline in some lastingway. This wouldn’t be much of asourcebook if they couldn’t. There’s alot going on in Gomorra, and yourindividual group can make quite animpression there if you want them to.

Along with the details on all ofGomorra’s people and places, we’veincluded some advice for the Marshalon how to bring the characters into thefold and have them take part inGomorra’s story. It’s just going to requiresome adjustments on the part of theMarshal—a different way of approachinghis or her campaign. It’s important tokeep that in mind as we go.

For the long-time players ofDoomtown—who are already familiarwith Gomorra and its denizens—a wordof warning. Many of the town’s darksecrets are revealed in these pages, secrets which some would prefer tokeep hidden. Be prepared for someserious spoilers if you venture too farinto the Marshal’s Handbook.

One last note before we begin:Gomorra is located in the state ofCalifornia, on the edge of the GreatMaze. The Maze is a complicated place—so complicated, in fact, that Pinnaclepublished an entire boxed setdescribing it. The people and forces inthe Maze have a significant impact onthe events and atmosphere of Gomorra, which has been stuck right in themiddle of the place. Marshals wishingto place their posses in Doomtownshould be familiar with California’senvirons—and the politics of suchfigures as Kang and the Union andConfederate armies—before they do so.

And now, let us adjourn to thestreets of Gomorra. You’re about tolearn all about its heroes, its villains, itssecrets—and the horrible fate that maybefall it.

Welcome to Doomtown.

To: The Office Of Union President Ulysses S. GrantFrom: Andrew Lane, Bureau Chief, Agency Western Branch, Badge #003RE: The Gomorra Situation

February 4 1877.

Ulysses,

You know I do not usually feel compelled to contact you by courier, but in thiscase I had to make an exception. The courier is an experienced operative who Itrust implicitly; her words are my words. If you have been reading my reports, you must be aware of the city of Gomorra,

California, an otherwise unremarkable boomtown which has become the focus of myattention in recent days. Gomorra lies in the heart of some of the richest ghost-rock veins in the Great Maze, and has attracted all manner of scoundrels, thievesand ne’er-do-wells.This in and of itself is not cause for concern. However, upon my arrival here, I

have gradually discovered something much larger—some great and sinister presencelurking just beneath the surface of Gomorra’s streets. The agents of this presenceconceal their true plans behind the battle for ghost rock—plans which I fear placemore than this single town in jeopardy. My agents and I have begun counter-operations in the hopes that we may uncover and defeat whatever this threat isbefore it makes its move. Heaven help us if we cannot. I wish I had time to take adirect hand here more than I do, but the Lost Angels situation is occupying a gooddeal of my time these days, not to mention the Fellheimer case.We have been doing our best to contain news of the more dramatic events in

Gomorra, but as has happened before, a muckraker from the Tombstone Epitaph hassounded out the situation in Gomorra thoroughly, if not entirely accurately. I haveenclosed the latest edition of The Tombstone Epitaph’s Guide to further appraiseyou of what the public knows. Given the Epitaph’s reputation for wild andunsubstantiated stories, I am confident that the more colorful aspects of theiraccount will be duly dismissed. Even if they are not, I have Operative BenjaminDean preparing propaganda measures to ensure that we keep tight control on what thegreater populace sees and hears about this place.I would be remiss if I did not mention that the Confederates are here as well. A

small group of Texas Rangers, under the leadership of one Katherine Karl (the onlyfemale Ranger I have ever heard of), are operating in Gomorra. For now, their aimseems to be the suppression and elimination of supernatural threats, as ours is. Iam willing to let them continue at it so long as they are discreet. Rest assured, however, that I am treating their presence with the utmost gravity and will nothesitate to act should they become a threat. The Confederacy shall never claim anysort of victory in Gomorra, be it political, moral or otherwise. Please instruct the War Office to have General Gill keep his troops well clear of

the area. Sending more armed men into this town is an invitation to disaster, andwould achieve nothing beyond raising the locals against us. In any case, I believeour true adversary here cannot be stopped by mere force of arms. My men and I aresufficient to keep this situation contained.I pray this letter finds you well, Ulysses, and that the fearful cause we are all

embroiled in does not weigh on your spirits too heavily. The ideals of our nationare being tested beyond what any thought possible just few short years ago. I praythat we are strong enough to see them through this long midnight into the morningwhich must lie beyond. I remain,

Yours Faithfully,

Andrew Lane
