Preface

Poetry is like a fragrant flower, difficult to delve

into its emotions, beautiful and wild and impossible

to forget. It envelopes you and clings to your

memory.I didn't want this wonderful wild flower to

wither within me and hence the birth of 'Musings at

Dawn' (My maiden venture in India.) 'Musings at

Dawn' will take you through a corridor of

overwhelming emotions, an intensity of feelings,

and in these lines you will find yourself mirrored.

Lines which preserve your profound cravings, your

memories and your experiences.

Lines which you can fall back on for that tender

support, for that unknown strength and supply of

energy hidden inside you. That you read poetry is

enough to suffice that life, love, peace and goodness

exist in you and this world. Musings at Dawn is not

to give an insight of how poets write but to help you

explore the dark corners of your heart and open

those barred doors and let the sunshine of this

beautiful world in. Sometimes I hide behind the

lines, read in between them, find me and it will be

you standing there! 'In poetries we meet ourselves.'

Dedication

I would like to thank Rev: Sister Rosalie who

nurtured me with love and care, provided a safe

home and made me who I am today. My sister

Teresa O'Neill Ross, my brother Joseph O'Neill

who stood by me through thick and thin. My family,

Ricky, Candy, Roy, Raynu, Angel and Jaydu who

are always there! My Dad, late Mr. Patrick O'Neill

from whom I have this gift of poetry. A big thanks

to all my friends for their love and support. I am

grateful to Patrography, Vishnu Patro, who has been

kind enough to let me use three of his photographs

for my poems, 'I am an Elusive Dream,' 'What If?'

and ‘Stolen Date’.

Musings at Dawn

Where do I go from here.......

It was 4am.

Gossamer silk fluttering,

I awaited in the cold dawn,

The mountains silhouetted against

the jagged morn,

The light gently pierced to fall in love

With the still slumbering Earth.

The wind, softly flowing, in waves of memories,

Hit me, then floated away to distant lands.

Far down the mountain side was a point,

Where my sight vanished, like a part of my soul.

Far away the mist ended, where the dawn

Persevered to peel the dormant darkness,

And I, to peel off memories of you.......

' That soft sparkle in your eyes,

The tender warmth in your breath......'

All my life there were dreams......Of flowers,

Heaving mountains, clouds

and gurgling brooks.....!

The wind shyly moved through my hair,

Caressing......gently like a lover's hand.

Seemed my dreams would never come true!

You had written sweet nothings,

Whispered promises, that never came to be.

Were they ever meant to be, I would never know.

Now layers and layers of visioned dreams

Lay rotting in crevices of my heart.

I will never leave the joy of arriving,

But I am bound to go........

You were my last wish, my lost desire,

A piece of that febrile breeze, meant to sally,

To travel places, till it was far away.......

The day had arrived!

The smell of the hot summer breeze

Climbed up the mountain side,

I realized........Chores had to be done.

The Church on the hill The Angelus gently beckoned.......

It was a long time ago,

I had forgotten,

Where I had left them,

Memories.......

Eluding for many moons,

They now whispered back,

From nowhere........

Twining wild in the evening wind.

I turned towards the mountain path,

Winding up, through tall heath.

'I had heard you call, across the wall.

Breathing like caged butterflies,

We had sat on the cold steps,

Holding hands, breathing quiet,

Silence playing around.......'

The old church stood still,

The font, I crossed myself,

The windows still framed your face,

The musty pews empty,

The heathered yard taunting,

Our first love, our first kiss, cherished,

Beautiful and mysterious.

I wondered........

'Do you still watch the mountains

Where every evening
