Sample Art from Discovering Biological
Psychology
Laura Freberg, Ph.D.California Polytechnic State University,
San Luis [email protected]
Sample Art Features
• These illustrations demonstrate some of the main features and innovations of the Discovering Biological Psychology art program.
• Illustrations will be preceded by slides that point out their major features.
• All art will be available in electronic form to faculty adopting the text.
Medical Illustrations
• Medical illustrations feature “key-to-slice” locator brains.• Pathway images include boxed flowcharts for easy
mastery by students.• Parts of the nervous system are colored consistently
throughout the text.• All labels consist of terms used in the text itself.• Illustrations feature sequential magnifications.• Where appropriate, photos are integrated into medical
illustrations.• Many concepts that are not illustrated in most competitor
texts are illustrated in Discovering Biological Psychology (e.g. innervation of the facial muscles)
The Cochlea
Sample Pathway Figure
The Neuron
• This figure is typical of our neuron close-ups.
• Note the “talking boxes” that walk the reader through each step.
• These talking boxes are used throughout the text for illustrations of sequential processes.
Line Art
• The following slides provide examples of the line art used in the text.
• Talking boxes help explain sequential processes.
• All terms used in the art program are the same as the terms that appear in the text.
Other Graphics
• Discovering Biological Psychology contains many graphs adapted from the original literature (Hubel and Wiesel, Hohmann, etc.)
• Difficult concepts (e.g. the cellular clock and correlates of hunger and satiety) are clarified by graphics.
Interim Summary Tables
• At two or three points in each chapter, we provide an interim summary.
• Interim summary pedagogy includes summary points, review questions, and interim summary tables.
• Interim summary tables integrate key points into one unit, promoting student success.
Additional Tables
• Other tables are used to help organize student learning throughout the text.
• In most cases, these tables are designed to compare and contrast key concepts.
Photos
• Photographs are all in color with the exception of historical photos.
• Each chapter is prefaced by a high interest photo (such as the hungry squirrel included here).
• Photos were selected to engage students. For instance, instead of showing an MRI machine with a patient, we show a fully loaded pallet being pulled into the machine. Students will remember the strength of the magnets used in this technology.
