WINTER GUARDThe Santa Monica High School Winter Guard performed at the Winter Guard Association of

Southern California Championships at Marina HS in Huntington Beach on Saturday, April 12.They received the gold medal for the 2014 Winter Guard competition season, with a score of

89.81 out of a possible 100 for their show “The Pursuit.”Led by captains Liza Mirkin and Rachel Theis, this is the highest score and placement the

group has received in many years.The group, which meets five days a week before school, plus outside evening rehearsals, is

coached by Juan Gonzalez and Jody Anderson.

Samohi’s Jazz Program is a dual enrollment program with Santa Monica College, meeting twice a week after school.

In February, senior Kyle McCreight was selected as lead trombone in the CA All-State Jazz Band for the third straight year and was joined this year by sophomore Glennon Davalos Stanton, also a trombone player. In March, The Samohi Jazz Bands competed at the Newbury Park Jazz Festival. Jazz band 2, under the direction of Sean Pawling, performed in the Novice Division and received straight “Good” ratings. Frankie Kohn (guitar) received an outstanding soloist award. Jazz band 1, under the direction of Tom Whaley, received straight “Superior” ratings and placed 1st in the Advanced Division with the highest score of the day. Julian Apter (guitar), Glennon Davalos Stanton (trombone), Jake Gold (trumpet), Zach Gotler (drums), Kyle McCreight (trombone), Andres Orellana (tenor saxophone), and Jane Wickline (piano) received outstanding soloists awards. The Samohi Jazz Combo earned unanimous “Superior” ratings, placing 1st in the Combo division. Julian Apter (guitar), Kyle McCreight (trombone), and Andres Orellana (tenor saxophone) received outstanding soloist awards. In May, Samohi’s Jazz Bands competed at the Westlake Jazz Festival. Jazz band 2 placed 3rd in the Novice division, receiving straight “Excellent” ratings. Frankie Kohn (guitar), Joey Ricard (trombone) and Jamie Cohen (tenor saxophone) received Outstanding Soloist Awards. Jazz band 1 received straight “Superior” ratings in the Heavy Division, placing 1st in that division. Julian Apter (guitar), Glennon Davalos Stanton (trombone), Jake Gold (trumpet), Zach Gotler (drums), Kyle McCreight (trombone), Andres Orellana (tenor saxophone), and Jane Wickline (piano) received Outstanding Soloist Awards and were awarded scholarships to the Idyllwild Summer Jazz Camp. The Samohi Jazz Combo also earned unanimous “Superior” ratings taking 1st place in the Advanced Combo division. Julian Apter (guitar), Kyle McCreight (trombone), and Andres Orellana (tenor saxophone) received Outstanding Soloist Awards.

The Samohi Jazz Bands will be performing their year-end concert with world-renowned Jazz Trombonist, Bob McChesney, on Sunday, June 1st at Typhoon Restaurant at the Santa Monica Airport. Doors open at 11:30am with the music beginning at 1:00pm. Reservations (310-390-6565) are recommended.
