Education Media Asset Creation 2
Thesis Abstract
Retail stores trying to increase profit and to offer better services have turned to educating
their customers in workshops. The companies that perform well have more offerings for
training for their customers. Go into an Apple store on a Saturday morning and you will
see five to fifteen people or even more at larger stores participating in a “getting started
workshops.” Cox the nations third largest cable operator purchased wireless spectrum a
little over two years ago. As part of this investment and wanting to offer a retail
environment to sell this new product Cox wanted to offer its customers a place to learn
and explore. Cox hopes that creating these opportunities will increase overall customer
satisfaction.

Introduction
Problem Addressed
For many that come into the Apple store they are always excited about the
opportunity to learn more about the hardware they have just purchased and the software.
People numbering as high as fourteen in a small store such as MacArthur Center Mall or
as many as sixty plus in a New York store wanting to attend a free workshop that starts at
eight in the morning on a Saturday really shows that people want to learn. People show
much interest when an Apple employee shows them all the amazing things that the
computer and software can accomplish. Of course as often is the case, people do not
think they can accomplish the same tasks that the employee shows. Then once they hear
about the one to one training membership they seem very interested but the fifty percent
that does not take the membership it most often has to do with restriction of time and the
travel that is required into the store. Often times it becomes difficult for mothers to bring
in children in order to learn something about the family’s recent purchase. In order of
offer a solution to this problem, I propose that Apple or other companies looking to offer
training to their adult customers create an online version with live interaction with an
instructor. This will give the person a very similar experience almost identical to what
they might get coming into the store but not having to leave the confines of their home.
Target Audience
This presentation would be designed to share with select test groups how the
training might look in real world operation. This would allow them to compare more
traditional methods of learning via presentations and manuals. The audience reaction will
allow for changes that will be able to refine for the final product that might go to market.

The audience will also be able to interact live with a trainer to get the experience they
might as an individual.
Sharing the project
The project will be created using a combination of programs including: Pages,
Keynote, iMovie, GarageBand, iWeb and even iChat. The project will include variety of
media to show the use of how important that will be for customers to gain the most out of
the new service. Many of the slide shows might be incorporated into QuickTime movie
player in order for the viewers to see what some of the classes might look like as well as
to share some statistical data.
Goals and Objectives
Instructional Goal
The subject for this project will be the learner and how does a traditional learning
experience look when presented face to face in the same location. The project should
show to those viewing what someone who purchases enhanced learning package
memberships might experience. The idea is to create a glimpse into what a learner will
experience in the same environment.
Learning Domain
As far as learning goes, this media will be geared to the cognitive learning theory.
The idea for the presentation is that learners will learn new skills including presentations,
how to create music, and a variety of other topics based on what the learner wants to
learn. The idea is simple; adults who want to learn are proactive in that approach and will
choose what they want to learn.

Learning Objectives
The learning objectives would change based on what the learner wanted to
accomplish. The project should show at least one or two concepts learned. The
presentation needs to show an exact representation of what the customer/learner will
experience when they purchase the enhanced membership.
Presentation
The presentation will incorporate all types of media. There will be some Keynote
elements, prerecorded video of an actual training session with a trainer and if the timing
can take place a live version of the iChat session with what training might look like in the
real world. The presentation must utilize all forms of media to the simple to the complex.
There will be some basic manuals with the instructions where a learner might just turn
pages to find out how to accomplish a task.
Instructional Approach
Cognitive learning theory will direct how the presentation goes because what the
learning hopes to accomplish is that the learner acquires a new skill. Those skills may
include making a song, creating a video, or even developing a presentation. The work
that Howard Gardner, Eric Jensen, and Jackie Dobrovolny, they will help shape showing
how the learning environment contributes, different intelligences and how adults are
motivated to learn. This will solidify what the viewers see during the presentation.
Lesson Structure
The presentation will talk about traditional learning to start in the lecture on a
topic without interaction with the learner. Then the presentation will show the current
video of how individuals can learn with trainers at Apple, and finally the presentation

will show a live interaction of a learning session with a trainer. This will give the viewers
a real chance to see how much better this option will provide adults to learn with a
variety of delivery methods.
Evaluation
The evaluation will come from a variety of methods. Surveys will have to be used
to see how the learners did with the new delivery method. These surveys will to offer a
method to give learners suggestions how to better the product and process. The instructor
will know if learning has taken place based on the feedback they receive from their
learner/customer. There is no way to test or quiz so it will be imperative for the instructor
to ask for feedback.
