“The beautiful thing about learning is that no one

can take it away from you.” —B.B. King

    Happy Reading!

For several weeks now, we've all been living in an uncharted territory: isolation,

home schooling, rampant spread of Corona virus despite partial/complete

lockdown have been the order of the day. Certainly not an easy time as we all have

experienced our fair share of disappointments. But let's not forget, there is always

light at the end of the tunnel; so we will find light. The flip side is that we've been

blessed with the time to think, time to enrich learning, devoting quality time to our

families, time to assess who we want to be when we re-emerge from this world

pandemic. There has never been a better time to access incredible resources from

the comforts of home. Agreed that there are circumstances beyond our control, but

it is our reaction which ultimately determines and predicts our future, success or

failure. Parents play a big role in helping children navigate through turbulent times.

We believe that by being a good role model, as a parent or as a teacher for our

children, we can surely motivate them how to focus on the job despite adverse

conditions. They should be made to know how the power of their mind can become

instrumental in shaping humanity. The present edition of newsletter encompasses

our students' unhindered learning process and is a manifestation of the resolve of

our teachers as well as parents.

  • TEACHERS' DAY CELEBRATIONSTeachers are the backbone of our society. They spearhead change by shaping and

building the students' personality and make them ideal citizens of the country.

Salwan Public School, Gurugram celebrated 'Teachers' Day' virtually but spiritedly

on 5 September 2020. The special day marked the felicitation of the gifted souls who

work day in, day out to ensure that the future of their students remains bright and

    secured.

The occasion witnessed heartfelt tributes paid to the teaching fraternity which has

painstakingly been making massive contribution in transforming the students'

careers. It was a day brimmed with lots of excitement, joy and happiness as students

expressed their sheer indebtedness for their mentors. The newly elected student

council 2020-21 sincerely thanked all the educators for their overwhelming support

and inspiration. A cultural extravaganza was organized and everyone enjoyed it to

    the fullest.

  • SUPER BRAIN YOGA

Yoga is not a religion. It is a science, science of well-being, science of youthfulness,

science of integrating body, mind and soul. -Amit Ray

To strengthen the cognitive power of children and to sharpen their minds, Super Brain

Yoga has been a regular feature in school. Educators are guiding the children to do the

Super Brain Yoga in a correct and result-oriented way.

WEBINAR ON SUBJECT-SET IN CLASS XI

A webinar was organised on 7th September 2020 for the students of class X on the

highly relevant subject of stream selection in class XI. The resource person for the

event was Mr Binit Binod. He emphasised that self-expectation should be the top

priority, to be followed by parental expectation, teachers' expectation and lastly

relatives /social expectation. He discussed the parameters on which one should

select career. The ideal criteria of choosing a career should be interest,

    personality, learning style and values.

The students were advised to first note down the areas of their interest, map them

with their abilities, personality and then make a wise decision about their careers.

He also shared various skills students must acquire for streams like Science,

Commerce and Humanities. Finally, he briefed students about the Pratham Career

and Stream Test, how does it work and the details about the same. It was quite an

    enlightening session

  • EMPOWERMENT DRIVE FOR MTS

A training session was organised for the Multi-

Tasking Staff members (MTS) of Salwan

Public School, Gurugram on 7th September

2020. The session was conducted by Mr.

Laxman Raghav, IT Engineer. Around 15 MTS

    members enthusiastically attended the

session. Mr. Laxman made the attendees

learn about the Internet and its uses,

    Introduction to Email, Mobile Application,

Cyber Security, School App-Qsnet uses, Live

Streaming of CCTV Cameras on Mobile, Staff

Leave application through Qsnet app, Social

Networking and Online Banking. All the MTS

members had hands-on experience and got

acquainted with the uses of the above-

    mentioned technologies.

THE SCIENCE OF COMPUTING: AN ENTRY INTO A NEW WORLD

A webinar on the topic "The Science of Computing: An Entry into a New World” was

organised by the Ashoka University on 22nd September 2020. The resource

person for the same was Professor Pankaj Jalote (Founding Director IIIT-Delhi).

He discussed about the science of computing. The discussion centred around the

nature of computing science and the emergence of a new paradigm for problem-

solving when the power of computing is combined with the power of data.

The speaker threw light on the interconnectivity of various sciences like Natural

Sciences, Social Sciences, role of Mathematics and Computing in real-life

situation. The keynote speaker informed that computing skills can be mastered by

a student at the later years of education but the most important skill is to upgrade

one's neural networks by studying the core subjects in early years of education.

The session culminated with an interesting question-answer round. Overall, it was

a very productive session as it gave a wider view of the future to blend computer

science knowledge with the core science subjects and its relation with the problem-

    solving approach.

  • POSITIVE IS NEGATIVE

It's there every day. When we look out of the windows, it came creeping silently, bringing sorrow and

grief to every human that was unfortunate enough to be touched by its effect. It has brought cold dark

nights in our tranquil days. It has engulfed the world in its blanket of despair, sickness, fear and

anguish. It has killed so many people and broken so many families. Never in the history of our survival

we have seen such a deadly mutating virus that has the potential to cause such an epidemic….to cause so

much agony, suffering and terror. It's no surprise that Corona virus is considered to be one of the

deadliest viruses and no country has been able to escape from its claws. Corona has brought a wave of

terror before which we are forced to kneel. It has made us change our lifestyle and has prevented us

from going outside. It has caged people in their own houses and we all are the prisoners of this virus.

December of 2019 was yet another normal time of the year but little did people know that from then

would unfold a series of twisted and grief-stricken periods which would ultimately emerge as the

COVID-19 Pandemic. With its starting point being Wuhan, this virus has spread its roots in almost

every country. Corona is indeed omnipresent and its effects are ubiquitous. Although Covid-19 has

touched every sphere of our lives, its most prominent effect on society is social distancing.

The virus has denied us our freedom of being able to socialize and spend time with friends. Now we are

discouraged to meet people and are strictly told to stay inside our houses. We are forbidden to come

outside without masks and hand sanitizers have almost become a necessity. Schools, colleges, offices are

closed and markets are rarely open. Even services such as railways airports and metro operate under

strict guidelines of the government. However, the most hard-hit people are the small businessmen whose

businesses have been ruined by the pandemic. Our carefree life has so suddenly taken a turn leaving us

devoid of any interaction with each other. With cases rising exponentially, it has almost become our duty

to stay inside to prevent the virus from spreading. Food insecurity ranks second on the list of effects of

Covid-19. With people getting terrified of the virus, they are stocking and sanitizing as much food as

possible so as to limit their visits to market and still live under the threat of food scarcity. Also,

everything from goods to buildings are being sanitized and cleaned thoroughly which was unheard of,

prior to this pandemic. People have now become more cautious about hygiene and are taking precautions

    to maintain it.

    Destruction of the world!!!

    Exuberant Expressions

  • Another alarming effect is the increase in the screen time. With restrictions to go outside and access

to laptop and internet, people specially teenagers have been spending more and more time in front of

their devices. School, office work and meetings have become virtual and hence sitting in front of the

screen has almost become indispensable. People have started devoting less time to exercising. They

have started neglecting their fitness schedule. And it's no surprise that you'll hear people cribbing

about their weight gain. Economy is not unaffected by this virus. Corona has stabbed the heart of the

economy of many countries. The economic impact of coronavirus pandemic in India has been largely

disruptive. On 26 May, 2020 CRISIL announced that this will perhaps be India's worst recession

since independence. State Bank of India research estimates a contraction of over 40% in the GDP.

however, the situation is far worse for advanced countries as they are expected to grow by 6 percent

in 2020 but the situation for developing countries is a bit better as they are expected to contract by 1

percent. Nowadays, the air is filled with gloom and despondency but somewhere amid this crisis, lies

a brighter side. Even if this pandemic has caused so much pain and loss in our lives, one can't deny

that there has been some progress also. Earlier talking, working and even paying money virtually

was not something people were accustomed to. But in such a situation, people are compelled to be

technologically advanced which is a positive outcome of this pandemic. It is quite amusing to note

that the effect of the pandemic has been quite virtuous on our environment. our atmosphere used to

be plagued with smoke and our land used to be littered with pollutants.

    By Aparna Singh (Class X)

We had exploited our natural resources beyond limits. Deforestation, water pollution, recklessly

mining, our environment has been tortured enough. However, during the lockdown our

environment seems to be healing. With human disturbances out of picture our earth seems to be on

the road of recovery. Post lockdown, the air quality index has risen and surroundings have become

cleaner. Smog has given way to blue skies in cities like Delhi, marine life is seeing increased activity,

pollution levels have dropped in almost all the metro cities and animals as well as birds are moving

around on their own accord. The pollutant concentration level in the air has also decreased

dramatically. It seems as if this virus is a blessing in disguise for the environment. Covid-19

pandemic has proven to be a tough phase of our lives. But we have to be at our strongest in this

weakest point of our life. The world needs different kind of minds to work together and create a

vaccine for this virus. Working together, ordinary people can perform extraordinary feats. They

can push things that come in their hand a little higher up, a little further towards success.

Remember, we have to be strong because things will get better. It might be stormy now, but it never

    rains forever.

  • Who would have thought that one day we will all be stuck in our houses because of a virus? Who

would have thought that the entire world will go on a lockdown? Who would have thought that the

word “bored” will become your favourite? Who would have thought that the only way to communicate

with your loved ones would be through video call? Who would have thought that you will miss school

and going to work? Who would have thought that you will be using this much sanitizer when you've

only used it before in dirty public bathrooms? Who would have thought, right? If you would have

asked someone a mere 2-3 months ago before the whole fiasco about being in quarantine because of a

“virus” he/she would've laughed in your face but it's surprising how that thought became reality as

fast as it did. The words pandemic or quarantine were such foreign words but now they are on

everyone's tongue day and night. This pandemic took a big toll on everyone's life be it a movie star or a

factory worker or a homeless person. Some felt the effect in a positive way and some well, not so

much. A lot of people make themselves look at the bad things and that's just human nature but, in this

case, the good effects still stand out as much as the bad ones. One of the biggest effects that this

pandemic has had on our lives is bringing families closer than they have ever been before. Living

with someone twenty-four seven, makes you learn things about them that you don't normally know

even though you have known them your entire lives. Another one of this pandemic's fantabulous

effects has been that people have actually started caring themselves which apparently earlier was not

a part of this lifestyle. The world has slowed down which was much needed because everyone gets

tired after running for a long time or in this case a very-very long time.

People taking care of themselves has led to increasing views on home workouts and skin-care

routines on social media and everyone is now working to get that “dream body'. Everyone is trying

out new things that they were earlier too busy for. Sitting on your couch and binge-watching TV

series and movies with a bowl of popcorn and your loved ones would have seemed something so far

flung a mere six months ago but now is an everyday occurrence. Online classes and work from home

are the two things that are testing how good our broadband width is! Nowadays, a trifling activity

like going to your local grocery store and actually seems like something so “taken for granted” before.

This pandemic has made wearing masks like a reflex, “you step out of the house, you wear a mask”

and not sanitizing your hands seems like something illegal in people's eyes. Social distancing or

staying two meters apart in public has become one of the most important rules in this game of

survival. It has adversely impacted the environment as well. No vehicles on the road, seems to have

    reduced air pollution.

Impact of The Covid-19 Pandemic on Society and Environment

  • The air smells so fresh and breezy that your balconies have started to become your favourite spot in

the house. The nature has become so calm and composed that the chirping of birds has become what

wakes you up in the morning and not car horns, also fireflies have become your night sounds. Rivers

have become clean and water actually looks blue! Stars can be seen in the night sky of the over-

bearing city. These were the good things but there are as many bad things. People have lost their jobs

or are having to survive with salary-cuts. This has devastated the economies of various countries

especially countries with unstable economies and under-developed countries. The COVID-19

pandemic has had a significant impact on public mental health as well. Anxiety levels are going over

the roof. There is rise of many irrational fears next to the fear of contracting the virus like the fear of

change and uncertainty etc. and there is always severe stress. It is much worse for people living

alone, who are far away from home.

This deterioration of mental health has started to weaken people's immune system which can prove to

be very vicious in these crucial times. The only way to help each other through these unbearable times

is to be there for one another and support each other emotionally and mentally and just make the best

of these times with the people you care about because once it all gets over you would not be having

that time for a while. Ample support and motivation are also needed for the health and essential

workers those who are putting their lives in danger every day to help others because not all

superheroes wear capes. Now it's also time for all the rebellious people to keep their attitudes at bay

and follow the precautions and guidelines adhered by the authorities to keep themselves and their

loved ones safe. It is also a good time for everyone to find that Zen that everyone desired for dearly.

It is a good time to self-reflect or introspect and maybe implement these changes in your life. It is

also time to make friends with everyone around you and just enjoy talking to them through the

balconies and having balcony dance parties. Also, in these chaotic times it is necessary for everyone to

provide essentials like food, water clothes etc. to people who are in dire need of it and help them to

stay motivated and telling them that everything is going to be okay. The only words to live by these

days are that 'Everything is going to go back to normal'. At the end, even in the chaos of things you

are free to slow down so just be.By Mehak Thapar
