SOUTHERN ILLINOIS NOTESSalukis Protect Their House in 2015 Preseason WNITThe Salukis closed out play in the 2015 Women’s National Invitational Tournament (WNIT) with back-to-back wins, defeating Siena College, 73-54 on their home floor before rallying to a 79-70 overtime triumph against the Tennessee State Tigers. SIU trailed at halftime against Siena, but utilized a third quarter in which they held the Saints without a field goal while outscoring the visitors, 30-6 to seal the win. The victory marked the first time since the 1990-91 and 1991-92 seasons that Southern has won back-to-back home openers. The following night, the Salukis got a big night out of their Preseason All-MVC selection, redshirt senior Dyana Pierre, who finished with 27 points and 21 rebounds to lead SIU past Tennessee State in overtime, 79-70. Southern improves to 2-0 at home this season, and was the first-time since the 1994-95 season that SIU has won back-to-back games on consecutive nights.

SERIES HISTORYThe series between UT Martin (formerly Tennessee Martin) is tied, 8-8 in a matchup that dates back to 1973. The Salukis broke a three-game losing streak in the series last year, handing the Skyhawks one of their 11 losses with an 87-78 win at Martin, Tenn. The Skyhawks have made five-straight postseason appearances, advancing to the Women’s National Invitational Tournament (WNIT) during the 2014-15 season.

LAST TIMESIU 87, UT Martin 78The Salukis pulled out an 87-78 victory over 2013-14 NCAA Tournament team UT-Martin at the Elam Center on Nov. 14, 2014.It was a sharp-looking Saluki squad that toppled

the Skyhawks, as Southern played exceptional basketball in just about every facet of the game. The Salukis shot an unreal 51.6 percent from the field on 17 assists -- more assists than in any regulation game last season. SIU dominated UTM on the glass, out-rebounding the Skyhawks 43-27 -- which included 12 offensive boards for the Salukis that led to 18 second-chance points. Southern didn’t stop there, as they also displayed a tenacious defense in the second half to hold UTM to 18.2 percent from the beyond the arc after the Skyhawks sank two-thirds of their three-point attempts in the first half.Five Salukis scored in double figures: Rishonda Napier (20 points, 6-of-15 FG, 2-of-4 3PT, 6-of-6 FT), Dyana Pierre (16 points, 11 rebounds, 7-of-10 FG), Mercedes Griffin (15 points, 4-of-6 FG, 6-of-7 FT), Cartaesha Macklin (13 points, seven rebounds) and Azia Washington (11 points, 5-of-7 FG).

SIU VERSUS THE OVC....Five of the Salukis ten non-conference opponents this season reside in the OVC, including UT Martin and in 170 meetings with current OVC schools SIU sports a .729 winning percentage (124-46).

SIU 66, MARYVILLE 60 (EXHIBITION 1)Three Salukis scored in double figures, led by sophomore guard Kylie Giebelhausen, who finished with 16 points, grabbed 13 rebounds and blocked four shots. Redshirt senior Cartaesha Macklin added

15 points and 10 rebounds, while redshirt junior Rishonda Napier tallied 10 points and eight assists for SIU, who never trailed in the game. The Salukis forced 14 turnovers and outrebounded Maryville, 55-41.

SIU 96, KENTUCKY WESLEYAN 64 (EXHIBITION 2)The Southern Illinois University women’s basketball team had four players score in double figures as the Salukis pulled away from the Kentucky Wesleyan University Panthers in the second half, winning 96-64. Junior forward Carlie Corrigan and sophomore forward Celina VanHyfte led the way with 19 points each, while junior forward Kim Nebo and redshirt senior guard Cartaesha Macklin added 16 points apiece.

SIU 61, No. 22 DEPAUL 105The No. 22 DePaul Blue Demons cruised to a 105-61 win over Southern Illinois University in the opening round of the 2015 Preseason WNIT Nov. 13 at the McGrath-Phillips Arena.

SIU had its hands full with the speed and intensity of DePaul’s full-court press, as the Blue Demons forced 23 turnovers that resulted in 30 points.

SIU was led in scoring by redshirt junior guard Rishonda Napier, who finished with 15 points on 7-of-15 shooting. Redshirt senior guard Cartaesha Macklin added 11 points, seven assists and four rebounds.

RPI RANKINGSAccording to Warrennolan.com, SIU’s RPI currently ranks 168th with a value of .5069. Five MVC schools rank higher than the Salukis, with Drake leading the way ranked 12th in the nation after wins over back-to-back Power Five conference schools to open the season. The Valley as a conference is ranked 11th out of 32 conferences with a .5187 RPI, while the Ohio Valley is 22nd with a .4536. The Salukis have an opportunity against UT Martin to improve their ranking, as the Skyhawks are ranked 56th with an RPI of .6233.

PRESEASON POLLSouthern was picked to finish fourth in the annual MVC Preseason Poll, which tallies the votes of conference coaches, media and SIDs. Missouri State has been tabbed as the preseason favorite as the Lady Bears are coming off a season in which they advanced to the 2014-15 MVC Tournament championship and closed out last season winners of 10 of their final 12 games. Missouri State, much like SIU, returns almost all of its statistical output from last season’s 18-15 squad that earned a berth to the WNIT.

PIERRE NAMED PRESEASON ALL-MVCSenior center Dyana Pierre was again one of six honorees on the MVC’s Preseason All-Conference

team. Pierre is coming off a superb junior campaign in which she became only the third Saluki to earn First-Team All-MVC honors in back-to-back seasons since Valley play began in 1992-93.

Pierre has led the conference in rebounds in each of her three seasons, and her 10.1 career rebounds per game currently ranks her third in MVC history. The senior center is 95 rebounds shy of becoming the second Saluki to ever amass both 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds.

FAMILIAR FACESThe Salukis return nine letterwinners from last season’s 17-13 squad, with all nine having appeared in at least 20 games. SIU has four seniors (Dyana Pierre, Blair Stephenson, Cartaesha Macklin, Azia Washington), three juniors (Carlie Corrigan, Kim Nebo, Rishonda Napier) and two sophomores (Kylie Giebelhausen, Celina VanHyfte) on the roster in addition to three freshmen (Ashley Hummel, Tiajaney Hawkins, Olivia Bowling).

SOUTHERN SIGNS 5 FOR 2016-17Southern Illinois University women’s basketball head coach Cindy Stein announced the addition of five student-athletes for the 2016-17 season. Caitlyn Claussen of Manhattan, Kan., Lauren Hartman of Tremont, Ill., Nicole Martin of Jefferson City, Mo., Kristen Nelson of Farmington Hills, Mich., and Brittney Patrick of Bolingbrook, Ill. are the newest members of the Saluki program, signing National Letters of Intent or letters of acceptance on signing day.

Caitlyn Claussen (Wamego High School) Guard/Forward, 6-0 Claussen is a native of Manhattan, Kan., and was an All-League performer during a junior year in which she finished second on the team in scoring and rebounding while helping Wamego advance to the Kansas Class 4A title game. She is a two-time North Central Kansas League All-League selection, including a nod on the First-Team this past season and also has garnered back-to-back selections on the Manhattan Mercury Flinthills All-Area team. The Wamego High School product plays AAU for the Ohlde Elite in Morganville, Kan., having attended the PBR Super 64 2014 National Championships, as well as being chosen for the All American Games tournament.

Lauren Hartman (Tremont High School) Center/Forward, 6-3 Hartman is a three-sport athlete at Tremont, earning All-Heart of Illinois Conference honors in volleyball, basketball and softball as a Turk. She averaged just under a double-double during her junior year, securing a spot on the All-Area team as well as the All-Heart of Illinois Conference First-Team. As a junior, Hartman helped lead Tremont to a 27-2 record, and its first regional championship since 1992. Hartman is a National Honors Society

member as well.

Nicole Martin (Jefferson City High School) Forward, 6-1 Martin is a three-sport athlete at Jefferson City, finishing fourth in the high jump at the state meet her junior year, while averaging 16 points and seven rebounds per game that year in basketball. She is a two-time All-Jefferson County Conference and All-Area honoree. She also earned a spot on the 2014-15 All-Central District team and played AAU for the Missouri Lady Warriors. Nicole has family ties to Southern, as her sister, Kezia, is a sprinter on the SIU track & field team.

Kristen Nelson (Harrison High School) Guard, 5-9 Nelson has been one of Oakland County’s top players for the past three years, and as a junior she averaged 14.4 points, five assists, four rebounds, 3 steals and 2 blocks. She has led her team in scoring, steals and assists in each of the past two seasons, and entering her senior campaign ranks first in school history in career assists, second all-time in both blocks and steals, and is seventh in scoring.

Brittney Patrick (Bolingbrook High School) Guard, 5-6 Patrick was named the March 2015 Chicago Tribune Female Student-Athlete of the Month and led her team in scoring, assists, and steals this past season. Patrick is also a 2014-15 Illinois All-State Special Mention who has earned All-Conference and All-Area honors in each of the past two seasons. During her junior year, she helped the Lady Raiders win the 2015 IHSA Regional Championship.

MACKLIN CLIMBING UP THE RANKSCartaesha Macklin crurrently ranks sixth all-time in SIU history with 1,350 career points. She needs 189 points to pass Amy Rakers (1987-1991) for most all-time. Over a 27-game stretch she would need to average 7 points per game this season to pass Rakers, and needs 31 points to pass D.D. Plab (1980-84) to move into fifth all-time.

Macklin also needs to make five free throws to pass Molly McDowell (1999-03) for most in a career. The redshirt senior from Mayo, Fla. did not go to the foul line in the win over Tennessee State on Nov. 21.

1,000 POINTS-500 REBOUNDS CLUBWith 33 rebounds, Cartaesha Macklin can become the 16th Saluki to score over 1000 points and grab 500 or more rebounds. Macklin would become just the fourth to join the club since the 2001 season, with Dyana Pierre being the most recent member.

PIERRE EYES SCHOOL RECORDSSue Faber could have some company this year. The 1983 SIU graduate, who scored 1,507 points and snagged 1,014 career rebounds has sat alone atop the the all-time list as the top rebounder in

Southern’s history, as well as the lone member of the 1,000-point, 1,000-rebound club. Senior forward/center Dyana Pierre needs 66 rebounds to join Faber in that illustrious club, and needs 81 rebounds to pass Faber to become Southern’s all-time leading rebounder. The redshirt senior forward needs just 12 rebounds to pass Amy Rakers (1987-91) to move into third all-time on the SIU rebounding list.

VANHYFTE’S FIRST CAREER START Celina VanHyfte made the most of her first career start against Siena, setting a new career-high with two blocked shots to go along with five points and three rebounds in 20 minutes of play.

PIERRE DOES IT ALL IN OVERTIME WINPreseason All-MVC forward Dyana Pierre scored 27 points, tied a career-high with 21 rebounds and blocked two shots in a career-best 43 minutes to lead the Salukis to a 79-70 overtime win over Tennessee State University Saturday night. She also established a new career-best at the charity stripe, making 9-of-15 attempts to set new career highs in both categories. With her nine made free throws, Pierre moved into 10th all-time in Salukis history with 221.

Pierre’s 20-20 game marks just the sixth time in available SIU history that a women’s basketball player has recorded 20-plus points and 20-plus rebounds in a single contest, and the second time Pierre has done so in her career. The redshirt senior from Port St. Lucie, Fla. also established a new WNIT record for rebounds in a game, surpassing Courtney Paris’s previous record of 20 rebounds set on Nov. 13, 2005 against Southern Methodist University.

With her 27 points on Saturday, Pierre passed Jasmine Gibson for 20th on the all-time Saluki scoring list, and now needs 17 points to surpass Jeri Hoffman to move into 19th place.

WASHINGTON ON THE RISESenior forward/center Azia Washington needs eight points this season to become the 32nd Saluki to score 800 career points, and only the 18th member of the 800-point/500-rebound club. Washington had only attempted 12 3-pointers coming into last season, and promptly shot 40.6% (26-of-64) from behind the arc, the highest 3-point field goal percentage on the Salukis of anyone who had more than 25 attempts.

NAPIER MOVING UP THE RANKSRedshirt junior guard Rishonda Napier continues to move up the all-time ranks as well. With two rebounds, Napier will become just the 66th Saluki to grab 200 or more career rebounds, and needs 18 assists to become the 20th member of the 200+ assist club. Napier currently sits in 25th place with 182 assists, and needs just four assists to pass Bridgett Bonds for 23rd on the all-time list.

Napier is 43 points shy of 900 for her career, and would join both Pierre and Macklin as the 26th member of the 900-point club.

MACKLIN MAKING 100th CAREEER STARTIf Cartaesha Macklin is in the starting lineup against UT Martin, it will mark the 100th career start of her decorated career.

THE VALLEY ON ESPN3This past summer, the Missouri Valley Conference and ESPN announced a 10-year extension to their current media rights agreement. As part of the deal- which continues a business relationship that began in 1986- ESPN, the MVC and its 10 member institutions will work jointly to develop in-house production capabilities at each campus that will provide significant national coverage for multiple sports on ESPN. As a result, EPSN3 will showcase a minimum of 820 events a year in the final six years of the agreement. This season, Saluki fans will have an opportunity to stream and watch 23 of the Salukis’ 30 games.

THE STEIN FILE

Cindy Stein enters her third season as the head coach of the Salukis in 2015-16. She was named the 10th head coach in Southern Illinois women’s basketball history on April 3, 2013. A proven winner and a former NCAA Division II Coach of the Year, Stein has made an immediate impact at SIU much like she has in each of her previous head coaching stints.

At Southern Illinois Stein and the Salukis conducted an improbable change of gear in 2014-15. Southern went 17-13 overall with a 10-8 conference record with Stein at the helm, ushering in the largest turnaround from one season to the next in school history at plus-12 wins. In fact, that turnaround was third-best in the NCAA by the end of the regular season in 2014-15. In perhaps the best Saluki women’s team since the 2006-07 WNIT team, Stein and the Salukis stunned the Missouri Valley with a bonafide, efficient offense that came primarily from the first solid starting five SIU had seen in ages in redshirt sophomore Rishonda Napier (point guard), redshirt junior Cartaesha Macklin (shooting guard), freshman Kylie Giebelhausen (shooting guard), junior Azia Washington (power forward) and junior Dyana Pierre (center). The crew went 16-8 together and combined for 84.2 percent of all SIU scoring. After losing backcourt superstars Macklin and Napier to redshirt seasons in 2013-14, Stein had an optimal offensive weapon set with skilled shooters on the outside, skilled bigs down low in Pierre and Washington, and superb passers getting them the ball and opening mismatches. Southern improved in nearly every statistical category from Stein’s first season to her second, including scoring, turnover ratio and even attendance. Pierre and Napier both put in

monumentally historic seasons, and both were rewarded with First-Team All-MVC honors for their superb efforts. Pierre was the only player in the Valley to average a double-double at 14.6 PPG and 11.8 RPG -- the latter of which was the eighth-best rebounding average in the NCAA that season. Pierre also put in only the seventh-ever 14-of-14 game in NCAA history, became just the fifth Saluki to ever record a 20-20 game and the fifth Saluki to ever join the 1,000-900 club.

At Illinois Central College Stein came to Carbondale after leading Illinois Central College to a 32-4 record and a third-place finish at the NJCAA Division II national tournament during her lone season at the school in 2012-13. Stein turned around an ICC team that went 16-16 the year before her arrival. Stein was named the NJCAA Region XX1V Coach of the Year following ICC’s run.

At Missouri Prior to ICC, Stein spent 12 seasons as the head coach at Missouri where she led the Tigers to 185 wins between 1998 and 2010. Stein inherited a Mizzou team that went 11-16 in 1997-98 and led the Tigers to a 22-10 record with a Sweet 16 run by her third year in 2000-01. Stein’s tenure at Mizzou saw the Tigers make seven total postseason appearances with three NCAA Tournament bids and four WNIT appearances. Stein’s players at Mizzou earned a combined 24 All-Big 12 honors with four First-Team selections, and she coached five Tigers who were selected in the WNBA Draft. Additionally, Mizzou players earned a combined 46 Academic All-Big 12 honors under Stein’s watch. Following a 13-15 mark during her first season in Columbia, Mo., Stein’s Tigers went 18-12 during the 1999-2000

STEIN’S COACHING RECORD

season, marking the program’s best record in seven seasons. The 1999-2000 Tigers also earned the program’s first postseason berth since 1994 with a trip to the WNIT. Stein’s third year saw Mizzou go to historic heights as the 2000-01 Tigers posted their best record in 13 years and made a run to the Sweet 16 for just the second time in program history. Following the season, Amanda Lassister became Mizzou’s first-ever first-round WNBA Draft pick when she was selected 15th overall by the Houston Comets while fellow Tiger Marlena “Pep” Williams was selected by the Indiana Fever in the third round. Missouri ultimately made it to the postseason six-consecutive seasons with WNIT berths in 2001-02 and 2002-03 before capping the run with an NCAA Tournament berth in 2003-04. The Tigers also continued sending players into the professional ranks as three-time All-Big 12 selection Evan Unrau was selected in the third round of the 2004 WNBA Draft by the Washington Mystics. The 2005-06 season was another banner year for the program as the Tigers went 21-10 for their second 20-win season of Stein’s tenure, and made it back to the NCAA Tournament. Mizzou had two more players selected in the WNBA draft following the 2005-06 season as LaToya

Bond was selected by the Charlotte Sting in the second round and Christelle N’Garsanet was taken in the third. The 2006-07 Tigers gave Stein her sixth postseason win at Mizzou with a victory in the opening round of the WNIT. Stein coached Mizzou to the most postseason appearances and postseason wins in program history.

At Emporia State Stein spent three seasons as the head coach at Emporia State prior to Mizzou, turning the Hornets from a sub-.500 team into a Division II national title contender. After going 12-14 in her first season at ESU in 1995-96, the Hornets improved to 20-10 the following season and made it to the second round of the NCAA Tournament before going 33-1 and finishing as the national runner up in 1997-98. The 1997-98 Hornets went 16-0 in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association, earning MIAA Regular Season and Tournament Championships in advance of the historic run to the NCAA Division II title game. Stein coached two-time All-Americans Aneta Kausaite and Jurgita Kausaite at Emporia State in addition to recruiting All-Americans Emily Bloss and Tara Holloway, who both went on to earn National Player of the Year honors. Aneta Kausaite eventually became the first-

ever Division II player to play in the WNBA. Following ESU’s run to the 1997-98 title game, Stein was named the National Coach of the Year by the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association, the Molten Division II Bulletin and the Kansas Basketball Coaches Association. She was also selected as the 1998 Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association Coach of the Year and the District VI Coach of the Year.

Early Career/Playing Career Prior to her head coaching experience, Stein was an assistant coach at Illinois (1993-95), Bradley (1988-1993), Cincinnati (1987-88) and Miami University (1986-87). Stein began her foray into coaching as a graduate assistant at Central Michigan from 1984-86. Stein played collegiately at Illinois from 1981-83 after two years at Illinois Central College from 1979-81. Stein helped the Illini to the 1982 NCAA Tournament, and she still holds several Illinois assists records. A junior college All-American, Stein also helped ICC to back-to-back appearances in the NJCAA national tournament. Stein has a bachelor’s degree in physical education from Illinois and a master’s degree in physical education from Central Michigan.
