It is our pleasure to address you as President of IAGOD (International

Association on the Genesis of Ore Deposits) in order to inform you about Salta Convention

& Visitors Bureau support of the nomination of Salta as a venue for the 15TH

QUADRENNIAL IAGOD, planned for August 2018.

Salta Convention & Visitors Bureau is a nonprofit NGO, which main objective

is to promote Salta as an ideal destination for the realization of congresses, conventions,

exhibitions and fairs; ensuring a sustainable development of the business destination.

The Institutions has been working for the province of Salta for the last 6 years

uninterruptedly, and it has more 75 associates, such as hotels, travel agencies, venues,

service providers, and other companies related to the tourism industry.

The Association is run by an Administrative Board: President Mr. Emilio

Deferrari, Vice-president Mrs. Soledad Urtubey, Secretary Mr. Joaquín Caso and Treasurer

Mr. Juan Manuel Lavallén.

We would like to point out that Salta has the optimal conditions and it is

prepared to be venue to host any kind of event, as it has the ideal infrastructure and

INTRODUCTION

The Geological and Mining Survey of Argentina (SEGEMAR) and the GeologicalAssociation of Argentina (AGA) organize the next 15th Quadrennial InternationalAssociation on the Genesis of Ore Deposits Symposium, to be hosted in the city ofSalta, Argentina, 28th to 31st August 2018 and give full support for its achievement.The focal theme for this Symposium is: “Ore deposits: providing resources for presentand future generations”.

It is worth to highlight that this is the first time for Argentina and South America tohost such important meeting. South America, particularly the Andean region includessome of the richest metallogenic provinces in the world, such as the richest Cu-Moprovince, one of the most extensive and rich Sn belts, one the richest Sb belts, themost important concentrations of Li in salars and one of the richest borates provinces.Also it hosts some of the largest individual ore deposits such as Cerro Rico de Potosí,Llallagua, Chuquicamata and El Teniente mines. South America offers excellentgeology hosting world class mineral deposits covering the past 2 Billion years ofEarth’s Metallogenic history, encompassing almost every conceivable metallogenicprocess. Thus the region offers something that will tempt every economic geologistand metallogenist. The diversity of the geology, mineral resources and populationinvite the world to investigate and discuss the science and enjoy Argentina’srenowned hospitality. The chance for Argentina for hosting this important meeting isa unique opportunity to create an extraordinary environment for the presentationand exchange of knowledge and research results on the genesis of mineral deposits.

It will also give an invaluable occasion for local scientists for training in various aspectsrelated to metallogeny and research tools. The Argentine bid commits to enhance theparticipation in the IAGOD Symposium of young geoscientists, students and delegatesfrom less advantaged countries from around the globe. The commitments from theGeological Survey of Argentina and the Geological Association of Argentina, thesupports from the Ibero-American Geological and Mining Survey Association as wellas from the private natural resources sector guarantee a successful 15th QuadrennialIAGOD Symposium.

The Geological and Mining Survey of Argentina (SEGEMAR) was founded in 1904 andplays a pivotal role in the knowledge of the geology of Argentina as well as in theidentification of main mineral resources of the country. Its main responsibility is toexamine the geological structure and non renewable natural resources of the territoryproviding geoscientific information and technical expertise required to promote anefficient exploitation of the natural resources, and to contribute to the preservation oflife and properties of the inhabitants facing risks derived from geodynamic processes.

The Geological Association of Argentina (AGA) was created in 1945. It groupsprofessionals, students, libraries, institutions and companies linked to thegeological sciences both from out country as well as from Chile, Uruguay,Brazil, Peru, USA, Canada, England, Spain, France, Germany, Italy, and theUK. Its aim is to foster the advancement of Geological Sciences, stimulatingscientific research, especially in regard to the best knowledge of the geologyof Argentina and neighboring regions of America.

The dates for this event are 28th to 31st August 2018 and are based on weatherconditions, accessibility of mineral deposits during field trips as well as reasonably alignwith the teaching calendars of the Universities.

PROJECTED NUMBER OF DELEGATES & POTENTIAL EXHIBITORS

The conservative estimate for the number of delegates coming to IAGOD 2018 isbetween 700 and 1,000. Potential exhibitors include local agents for international andlocal mining companies, scientific organizations, and service and equipment suppliercompanies.

REGISTRATION FEES

The preliminary cost estimation is U$S 550 for Regular Registration Fee, U$S 400 forLDC participants Registration (up to 20% Delegates) and U$S 200 for Students (up to10% Delegates). The Fee comprises all costs of the Symposium including conferencepack materials, every day bus services from and to hotels, warm lunches, morning andafternoon coffee catering, Welcome party and Farewell Assembly cocktail. It alsoincludes one day excursion for all delegates with the “Train to the Clouds - Tren de lasNubes” departing from Salta as a farewell party.

Argentina is a huge country, the 8° biggest in theWorld, with well- differentiated geographic regions, arich biodiversity and a vast variety of landscapes andclimates.Located in South America, and thus, in the southernhemisphere, Argentina has an area of almost 3.0million square kilometers. WEATHER

Given the diverse geography, jungle, high mountains and dry valleys, Salta has manyclimates, so a wide variety of temperatures – ranging from 4° to 25° - can happen atthe same time of the year. Days are temperate and nights are cool. At higher altitudesthis temperature difference increases.

GEOGRAPHICAL ASPECTS

Four different landscapes can be differentiated, from west to east:

Puna (west) It is characterized by its height, arid climate and a low number of

residents. This region, also known as Puna de Atacama (northwest of Argentina,

together with Chile and southern Bolivia), is considered an astronomical paradise

where more than 50% of the largest telescopes in the planet are emplaced. It is also

noted for having 13 of the 15 largest salt flats of the world (approximately 50.000

km²); 3 of which are located in the province of Salta: one is entirely in the territory

(Arizaro); a second one (Salar del Hombre Muerto- Salt flat of the dead man) is shared

with the province of Catamarca and a third one (Salinas Grandes) is shared with the

province of Jujuy. Between the Puna and the mountains-valley area the is also the

great Quebrada del Toro where San Antonio de los Cobres is located.

Western Cordillera (in the central-west). It presents two different environments:

- Western Mountain range: It is the highest and it consists of many other mountain

ranges such as el Nevado de Acay.

- Eastern Mountain range: it is lowest and it does not have snow-capped peaks. It

consists of valleys and gorges, such as the previously mentioned Quebrada del

Toro, Valles Calchaquies and Valle de Lerma. This is one of the most populated

areas where the capital of the province is placed.

Sub Andean Mountains (central-east). The landscape is a mixture forest and humidity

with hot tropical valley, it has a subtropical climate.

Chaqueña plains (east). The topography is low. This area, known as “Chaco salteño”,

has a subtropical climate and dry season, hills and forests biomes, and a low

population density.

METALLOGENIC ASPECTS OF THE CENTRAL ANDES, SOUTH AMERICA

The Central Andes orogenic systemcomprises, from west to east, the CoastalCordillera that is separated from theWestern Cordillera by the Precordillera orCordillera de Domeyko, in northern Chile.Between the Western Cordillera (alongwhose axis is located the Central Andeanactive volcanic chain) and the EasternCordillera, extends the plateau area calledthe Altiplano or Puna. The dimensions ofthis extensive plateau, of approximately1500 km in length and 200 km in width, andwith an average elevation of 3700 m abovesea level, are only exceeded by those of theTibetan Plateau. The Sub-Andean system, tothe east of the Eastern Cordillera, marks thepiedmont of the Andes between southern

Peru and the region of Jujuy in Argentina, and comprises a fold-and-thrust belt, activesince the Miocene, in which the compressive deformation is manifested by horizontalshortening of up to 250 km.

The geological history of the Central Andes includes two major cycles. The first, fromthe late Proterozoic to Upper Paleozoic, registers diverse phases of extension andaccretion of parautochthonous terranes, basin formation and orogenic processes,related to the dispersion of the Pannotia supercontinent and the separation ofLaurentia from Gondwana. This cycle culminated in the Upper Paleozoic-Triassic, in aperiod without active subduction, which was re-established in the Lower Jurassic(Andean Cycle), with the implantation of a magmatic arc in the present CoastalCordillera of northern Chile. The early Mesozoic magmatic activity was accompaniedby the development of a complex system of magmatic arcs and extensional back-arcbasins, which persisted until the late Upper Cretaceous.

The first periods of "Andean" compression, occurring during thev Upper Cretaceous(Mochica and/or Peruvian phases), were followed by the eastward displacement of themagmatic arc. Later, the geological evolution of the western area of the Central Andeswas characterized by the implantation, and progressive westward migration, ofmagmatic arc systems and associated intra-arc volcanosedimentary basins (UpperCretaceous, Paleocene, Eocene-Lower Oligocene, Neogene). These periods of activemagmatism alternated with discrete episodes of regional deformation related to majorchanges in the convergent regime between the Nazca-Farallon and South Americanplates. The majority of the mineralizing events of the Central Andes were related tothese arcs, such as the volcanic and subvolcanic complexes of the Upper Cenozoicsituated in the Eastern Cordillera, Puna and Altiplano, in the backarc zone.The Central Andes possess significant metalliferous and industrial mineral resourcesdistributed into four principal metallogenetic provinces whose arcuate forms coincidewith that of the Bolivian Orocline. These comprise the Precordillera Copper Province,the Altiplano Polymetallic Province, the Eastern Cordillera Tin Province, and the EasternPolymetallic Province.

The Precordillera Copper Province, of worldwide economic importance, extendsapproximately 2200 km and is located on the Pacific slope of the Andes of southwestPeru and northern Chile. It comprises eleven mega – porphyry copper deposits withsubordinate Mo, Au and Ag. Some of the most important of these are Chuquicamata, LaEscondida and Collahuasi, three of the largest individual copper accumulations in theworld. In Peru this province contains the porphyry deposits of Cuajone, Toquepala,Cerro Verde and Quellaveco, which, added to other nearby deposits, contribute 85% ofthe total copper production of Peru. The Altiplano Polymetallic Province is located in thecentral part of the area covered by the map. It has a longitudinal extent similar to thatof the Precordillera Copper Province, with which it is in contact on its western side, anda width of up to 200 km. It comprises deposits of Ag-Pb-Zn, Cu, Au, Au-Ag, Sn, U-Cu, andFe, of various origins. Of these, it is worth mentioning the epithermal deposits of theMaricunga Belt (La Coipa, Esperanza, Marte, Lobo, Refugio, Cerro Casale), which islocated in the extreme south of the province in Chile. Important industrial mineralresources are located within this province, including some of the most importantlithium resources in the world (Salar de Atacama, Chile; Salar del Hombre Muerto,Olaroz, Rincón and Cauchari, Argentina; Salar de Uyuni, Bolivia), important boratedeposits (Tincalayu, Loma Blanca and Sijes district, Argentina), and common salt.

The Eastern Cordillera Tin Province comprises a polymetallic province in which tin is thedominant metal. This province extends from southeastern Peru to northwest Argentinaand is best developed in Bolivia. It constitutes one of the most extensive and rich tinprovinces in the world and includes, in Bolivia, the Llallagua deposit, wich is the largest

accumulation of hypogene tin in the world, and Cerro Rico de Potosí, the largest

known silver deposit in the world.

The Eastern Polymetallic Province has a longitudinal extent of approximately 1800 km,

and is located along the northeastern and eastern border of the Eastern Cordillera,

from Cuzco in the Peruvian Andes, to the outh of Salta, Argentina, and comprises the

easternmost Central Andean metallogenetic province. It contains polymetallic Pb-Ag-

Zn, Sb, and U-Th-REE deposits. The first type includes Argentine sedex-type stratiform

deposits of Pb-Zn-Ag (-Cu), such as the La Colorada and El Aguilar deposits (this last

outside the map area). In Bolivia, this province comprises the Southern Bolivian

Antimony Province, one of the most antimony-rich belts in the world.

The gold mineralization in this province comprises mesothermal vein deposits

associated with Paleozoic turbidites, and important placer and paleo-placers derived

from these (Madre de Dios, Peru; Tipuani, Bolivia). The above description shows the

variety and worldwide importance of this region from a mining viewpoint, in which are

concentrated the principal deposits of Cu, Sn, Ag, Sb and Li in the world, and important

deposits of Pb, Zn, REEs, borates and common salt. In addition, the principal

metallogenetic processes involved are related to the evolution of a Paleozoic marine

basin, with which are associated Au, Pb-Zn-Ag and Sb mineralization; and to the

magmatism associated with the subduction of the Pacific plate, which from the

Mesozoic onwards dominates the geological history of the Central Andes, and with

The rich mining history of this part of America that began with the exploitation of Ag

in the Cerro Rico de Potosí (Bolivia) continues today with the exploitation of Cu and

Au porphyries in the Andean region of Chile and Argentina, as well as Li from the salt

lakes in the Puna - Altiplano triangle that comprises Argentina Bolivia and Chile.

metals (Ag, Sn, Cu) and nonmetals (B, Li) having the opportunity to discover the

cultural aspects of this region and their inhabitants.
